Just because Dirk Nowitzki won one title after so many years doesn't mean he's the best right now. The guy can't even defend.

I think Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson would have a close fight as the best basketball player of all time.

Current:
Kobe
then Durant
Of all time in the shortened span of his career Michael Jordan proved that he was the best point per game scorer of all time. But he did not have the same length of a career as Kareem Abdul-Jabar/ Lew Alcinder, who proved that he could be not only the highest scorer of all time, but also have the most all-star appearances of all time. If you go back, it would be reasonable to add Wilt Chamberlain because of his unbelievable stats or Bill Russell because of his 11 championships that he led the Celtics to winning. Magic Johnson has to be in the argument too because, like Jordan, he proved that even with less years in the league as Kobe Bryant/ Kareem, he could set records and win multiple championships. So in the outlook of most NBA fans, winning championships is what matters most, so Bill Russell proves to be the best.

In our modern time, nobody has the ability and athletic advantage as LeBron James, who is looking like he is on his way to becoming a 3-time MVP player. I would still rather like to take a player like Kobe Bryant, Chris Paul or Derrick Rose in the end of the game. Kobe Bryant is looking older than ever, even though that he is putting up a great show in LA with his scoring, he will not be able to continue long and he is already showing signs of slowing at the end of his career. Players like Dirk Nowitzki and Kevein Durant prove that there is limited ways to stop there offensive talents, showing that they can score at any point of the game.

Best player of all time, I choose Bill Russell and of modern players, even though Kobe Bryant has gained the lifetime achievement award for his 5-championships it is showing that its time to pass the torch to LeBron James of the Miami Heat because with the talent on his team and his outstanding abilities it seems imminent that Miami will win multiple championships by the end of his career.
