What's a colorguard?

Colorguard started out in military academies and whatnot... but now its mostly associated with the flag girls at football games.
Most schools have field season (march at football half time) and indoor season (a colorguard performs alone in competitions in gyms) |

Color guard is scholastic and fills the gaps for the marching band during football season. WINTER guard can be either scholastic or independent and competes from January through May, indoors, with much better outfits, way better props and equipment and doesn't need a back up band.
