When someone suspects that they may have a disorder such as anxiety, depression, bipolar, etc, when or how do they go about the process of calling a doctor?

Which do you think is better, group therapy, a 1 on 1 session with a therapist/counselor/etc, or taking meds? Or all three?

Do you intend to skip getting help from someone else and find other ways to soothe yourself such as writing?

If you chose to not get help, why not?
Seek out a Psychologist and schedule an appointment, more than likely the first few sessions would be with yourself and just the doctor. As for group, I'm sure that's left up to the doctor and yourself to determine proper treatment. As for which therapy being better, again, that's entirely dependent on yourself, the doctor, and your disorder.

Although writing, painting, or any other outlet may be a good means of expression or letting it out, but sooner or later the issues won't be soothed with just hobbies.

In the same way as one would call a doctor for non-emergency medicine; they should signpost to available services. Be aware though that some doctors, not being experts in mental health, can be quick to prescribe often quite hard drugs- antidepressants in particular.

Ugh, this was exactly my experience. I went and spoke with my doctor and told him how I was feeling. He had me take a paper and pencil test that I swear was written by a middle school counselor, then magically diagnosed me with "mild depression" based on my score. Then he gave me a 9-month prescription to antidepressants.

Suffice it to say the whole thing felt absolutely hollow. Why he didn't simply direct me to a therapist, I don't know.

Someone told him that depression was an illness and gave him a diagnostic procedure. Doctors are very proud, they are very happy to accept a medicalisation of psychology.
