What you think the impact of current Western gender roles on sexuality is?

That sounds an awful lot like a homework/essay question. ;o

Actually, it's one of the options my friend has to chose as her thesis.

However, I'm just curious as to what others have to say on that O.o

I think it sends out a clear message that, whilst acknowledging and celebrating the differences of the male and female gender, both genders can live equally.

I think some cultures may confuse the idea that we want male and females to be equal. But that is impossible. There's the obvious biological differences of genitalia, conception, body shapes etc and typical behaviours of male and females. There are also different rights, like females having maternity leave. But we try to be equal when it comes to employment, education and voting. There are still discriminations that exist, like managerial and executive roles being dominated by males, but this division is evening out.

When you look at other countries (predominantly Arab countries) females have far less rights. Females in Saudi Arabia cannot leave the home without a male escort and without wearing a hijab and burqua (sp?) and they cannot work or enter education without their male family member's permission. A lot of females in these countries have fought for more rights, even to drive a car, which may have been influenced by our equal rights in the West.

I could go on, but I look forward to seeing replies.

Except when there are differences, one will always be superior to the other. The only question will be degrees.

because of western imperialism which cemented white hetero patriarchy, indigenous non binary identities have been purged and erased through genocide and colonial conquest of land and resources. pre colonial gender roles show that the male/female sex and gender binary system was something inherent in european cultural roles and expectations. this follows a consistent pattern in todays social landscape where LGB, transgender, intersex, and gender variant folks are dehumanized and purged and are seen as sexual deviants.

I think that western sexuality has made lots of things shameful from being accepted as a person with two genders and an honoured person of theri nation to a disgrace and a freak. Then again things have gotten way sexier instead of modest. Cultures and nomadic culture are dissappearing. People are going from healthy to fat or supper skinny.

What about places imperialized by non European states like Japan, China, Ethiopia. Or a quasi European state like Turkey/Ottoman Empire.

Well, I can't really speak to those non European nations since I'm a westerner and my knowledge is limited to western bodies of knowledge and the colonies in this hemisphere.

Are you seriously telling me you are throwing around colonial theory type stuff, but don't know anything about the brunt of where modern imperialism took place? Europe? Asia? Africa?
This hurts my head severely.

no, what I'm saying is that because I have a western perspective of the world, a north american experience, and thus western privilege,I can't speak for Eastern/Southern Asian and African continents and their intricate histories revolving around gender/sexuality/etc. I can only speak to the systems of domination/exploitation that create abject conditions through a scientific study of history/colonization, that relies on the total subversion/decimation/construction of "third world" in order to turn countries into markets for trans national capital/resources. Western folks are complicit in this neo liberal project and often reinforce white supremacy, while erasing the narratives of people who have been here before and who are struggling within our own borders. While I think that it's important to draw analysis, make comparisons, and study modern imperialism as a global system, we must never forget that western neo imperialism is a major colonizing agent and is much to blame for the state of the world, and thus needs constant vigilance and hyper visibility on all fronts. Also, going back to the op, she specifically asks about western gender roles and this immediately signifies the construction of white male masculinity via the institution of hetero-patriarchy and the creation of the nation state. never forget what western colonization/imperialism triggered, whose goal was to always settle on occupied land and to create markets for their respective crowns.

IThere are also different rights, like females having maternity leave.
Actually, this is changing a lot recently.

Males can take unpaid paternity leave through the FLMA in the US, and many countries guarantee paid paternity leave. Wiki has a list.
