This is a question that's been bouncing around my head for a bit.

Earth has, to our knowledge, never really had a purely matriarchal society. We've had/have matrilinear and matrilocal societies, but no matriarichies that are like the patriarchies we're familiar with.

What do you think a matriarchal society would value, a society that rejoiced in the strength and power of femininity and considers their men to be the weaker sex? can you list traits and ideals that such a culture would have? how would they dress? what would their daily life and religion be like?
I wouldn't be surprised if it ended up being more or less the same thing, except with reversed rolls.

There's a long-running webcomic called "Drowtales" and I remember that there was a tribe or species of Drow that was matriarchal and they actually explored that concept in the storyline... And, yup, the guys were all slaves and the women were ferocious Xena Warrior types.
A purely matriarchal society would value lifetime movies and oprah winfrey
there have been plenty of matriarchal societies! However in most, women still respected men and still treated them somewhat equally. They have existed in asia, africa, south america, north america, and even in celtic societies. It mostly existed in tribal cultures, when they got too big they would be discovers and made into slaves from larger patriarchal societies. Ever heard of the Amazon women? The biggest differences relate to marriage, family structure, and raising children. When women control what goes in and comes out of their v****a, children are often raised by the whole tribe, where all the men are their fathers. In patriarchal societies, men marry women so that they control them and their children and give them his name to ensure that his possessions would be carried down his bloodline and not just given to the benefit of the tribe.

wikipedia says there has never been a truly matriarchal society and if I'm not mistaken, the Amazons are largely considered to be a myth, although it does give me an idea of where to start looking for some ideas of how one would play out.

do you mind giving me the names of these matriarchal tribes? I'd love to look into them further. It's always possible that Wikipedia's wrong, haha.
I thought there was at least one Native American tribe that had a matriarchal structure. I remember studying it in a political science class in college. I thought it was interesting because a woman could divorce her husband simply by putting his moccasins outside their home, and he had no say in the matter. ROFL
A purely matriarchal society would at the end of the day not be fundamentally different in any meaningful way.

more or less the same as a patriarchy but with the genders switched, you're saying?

I don't think I would enjoy that. Soap Operas do not sit well with me at all.
Pandering to man's every whim?

I joke.

I don't want to guess, that would be sexist. Apparently ¬¬
I don't know if the gender roles would necessarily be reversed but I do know it'd still be annoyingly sexist on both ends. There'd still be greedy and violent people in the world, I don't think any such statistics would change. There'd still be plenty of war.
This subject is interesting to me because I've studied the difference between Chimpanzee and Pygmy Chimpanzee (or Bonobo) societies. Chimpanzee societies are male-dominated and violent, males earn their stripes by beating up the females. Females eat last and suffer daily abuse at the males hands. Bonobo societies, however, are matriarchal. In Bonobo society a female gains rank by offering herself, sexually, to the head female. All disputes, and group unrest, are solved by making love, not war. Bonobos are all bisexual, and often engage in group sex to deal with tension. If males step out of line the females smack them down, but generally their culture is given over to sex/love (if you believe such primates capable of love).

I don't know if it would work the same way with humans, but that does give you something of an idea.
Matriarchies value the p***s very highly, that's why patriarchy happened.
