Welcome to Gaia! ::

So, I recently found out that I likely have synesthesia.

My entire life, I've been relatively good at adding up numbers that equal fifteen. To me, the numbers "combine". For example, the number seven's top will wrap around the center of the eight, making fifteen.
When I hear the sound of metal clanging, I get a sharp pain in my teeth.
The days of the week are much like the letter "T". Monday through Friday are the vertical line. Saturday and Sunday are the horizontal line.
I see music as the color purple, depending on which instrument is played. The violin is a beautiful, deep purple, while the drums are just dark purple. Unfortunately, the cymbals are also a beautiful shade of purple. This wouldn't be an issue, but they hurt my teeth.
Years can be viewed on a plane. They are literally behind or in front of me. The same goes for months.
Finally, different languages also have different colors. For example, French is a bright, bright red. English is yellow. UK English is a softer yellow, and almost looks fuzzy. US English is a deeper yellow, almost like sunflowers.
Also, when I eat certain things, I picture certain things. When I eat shrimp, I think of spiders, for example.

It's been like this my entire life, and I only recently discovered that not everyone perceives things this way. I've been like this my entire life. For the longest time, I've attributed the pain in my teeth (triggered by the sound of metal) to my hypersensitivity to sound, etc. I attributed my hypersensitivity to Asperger Syndrome.

So, I want to ask... does anybody else here on Gaia have it? If so, how do you experience it? When did you start to notice it?
I don't have synesthesia, but I'm going to share my experience anyway (I'm seeing this thread as a way to ask about how other people see the world, so here goes)...

I associate a lot of things that don't make sense. Different experiences, not colors with sounds or anything. For instance - let's say I'm eating ice cream when I see a man's head explode (I don't know), from then on if I ever even heard the words "ice cream", I would picture the man's head exploding. Or if there's something bad that happened in the past, I can't stand to talk about it because I'm afraid it will alter how I see other experiences because I will associate the two things, even if they have nothing in common. It's hard to explain, and doesn't always make sense. I'm not really sure why I do it, and it's pretty annoying sometimes.

Not very interesting, but hey - I shared, right?

That's just a susceptibility to memory cues and a visual memory.

If that's all you have to say, I really have to wonder why you even bothered saying anything at all. Yeah, of course that's just memory being triggered by seeing something (or hearing certain words, like in my example). The OP doesn't quite experience things like most people, though, so I figured maybe it wouldn't hurt to share the boring and average way that I associate memories with certain words or sounds or feelings. It's how most people do it.

I can make stuff bold too. That was basically my thought.

If you didn't like what I had to say then I guess I'm sorry you haven't figured out how to skip over it. But I guess you're right, I shouldn't have posted anything to begin with. I just figured I wasn't hurting anything telling the OP how I associate things. I'm pretty normal and boring, and I guess the way I remember things is like most people. Maybe the OP doesn't know that, though, so what's the harm? If it ends up being a stupid post that really isn't relevant, then just report it or ignore it, and I'm sorry if I shouldn't have said anything. From this post on though, I'd appreciate it if you didn't quote me in this thread. At this point neither of us is saying anything relevant to the thread, and we're both being complete assholes by posting irrelevant crap. Sorry op, I really didn't mean for it!

Like you said, it's not synesthesia... but I find it interesting. I think everyone perceives things differently, and some people have more... unique views than others. I certainly understand what you mean by the association. And I know what you mean by how it gets annoying.

I don't like going out to eat with my family for many reasons. One of them is that I have two younger brothers that love to clang metal together to see my reaction. Too them, it's amusing.

And I appreciate that you tried to stop the troll before it became too much. ^_^ I've seen pages and pages of arguments with trolls. Just ignore her if she posts again.

That's unkind, I was genuinely trying to be helpful. It didn't work out too well but if I wanted maximum effectiveness I'd go back to trolling full time.

This may be an annoying question, but what color is Japanese?

As you can see, I don't have synesthesia, but I find it interesting. Do you like having it or is it a bother?

Oh, it's not annoying at all! ^_^ I'm quite happy to answer questions.

Japanese is kinda like the color after blood dries. It's beautiful, though!

And it's quite beautiful... 'cept for the when I hear metal. Today, I went to an ice cream shop, and the workers were using metal spoon things (not ice cream scoops... these were kinda flat), and placing them on the table, so they could put toppings on them. They used the spoon things to mix the toppings and ice cream, and the spoon things were hitting each other. There was a sharp pain in my teeth all the while.

However, I like synesthesia. It's beautiful, when I'm not hearing clanging metal. And even when I hear cymbals, even though it hurts, it's beautiful. The cymbals are some of my favorite instruments to look at... if only I could see the color without hearing the sound!

Thanks! That is too cool. It's like a magic power! Do you plan on doing anything with your synesthesia? Like become an artist and illustrate songs? Cuz there are so many possibilities...

Well, it's kinda interesting... I didn't realize until quite recently that other people didn't see/feel the things that I did.

I think that's actually a pretty neat idea... an artist that illustrates songs. I think that'd be pretty neat to do on the side. I was considering being a linguist or translator. I'll likely either do something involving languages or be a vet.

Weird. I did too actually. I wanted to be a vet. Or someone who translates animes and manga. But then I decided to be a doctor to keep my parents from flaying me alive.

What languages do you want to learn? Japanese is actually a lot of fun. Italian was easier though.

Oh my. eek Elvish would be fun, and Arabic extremely useful, but you've pretty much covered all the bases here. Belarusian... eek You'll be an epic translator.
