My paranoid schizophrenic uncle lives with us right now. My mom had to care for her dying father who was also a paranoid schizophrenic. Believe me, anyone who paints a rosy picture of such a profound mental disorder has never had to deal with a grown man (grandpa) throwing a seven-year-old child across the room (giving her a serious concussion) under the delusion that enemy soldiers were in the attic and going to shoot through the ceiling at them both. Or an uncle who, when off his meds thinks his whole family is against him and is going to poison him in his sleep, and refuses to eat for days (meanwhile getting drunk off his a** because if he doesn't, the voices scream at him, mock him, laugh when he tries to talk, etc) and has thrown glass bottles at me and my sisters. Fortunately after the last time he stopped mom gave him an ultimatum to stay on his meds or she will have him committed. He's stayed on them for a year so far.
