Regardless of religious perspectives on the issue, I hate porn. In general it seems to me like this sick alternate world where everything that is at least somewhat socially unacceptable in the real world is completely embraced: misogyny, abuse, racism, violence, etc. I feel violated by it's existence without even looking at it. I know that sounds harsh and I'm not trying to attack anyone who is in porn or watches porn. I'm just saying that as a woman and as a human and as a member of an ethnic minority, I feel really deeply disturbed by a lot of what I see in porn.

(I'm not including all erotic images/films in this, only what is generally spoken of as "the porn industry" and its popular products.)

I have no issue with masturbation.

What I quoted in my last sentence really recognized with me. Thank you for commenting, sometimes I feel that I'm the only one that feels this way. But, of course, as noted, I'm not. Which feels great. smile But, since I think that we're the minority, it's easy to feel that way. I think most people don't find anything wrong with pornography and deeply enjoy it, and some even get very aggressive and/or defensive when you tell them that your point of view is not the same as theirs.

No one ever thinks that they are. Your conclusion comes from your decision rather than the reverse. You have decided to masturbate - which is fine - and contrived a justification for it - even though none is needed.
I might even go so far as to agree that masturbation may be important as you describe in infancy but come the genital organisation it is a regressive practice, admittedly one in which I myself indulge.
The same in fact could be argued of all manner of similarly useless occupations and it would be similarly unconvincing. Just because it means a personal experience does not make it personally meaningful.

I can see where you're coming from and agree that masturbation is most important in your earlier stages in life (not too early of course). I think it's most important when you're a young adult, since, they're not experienced or do not have a lot of experience with themselves due to age. A time when you're really just trying to get to know yourself even though we're all ever changing. I find it interesting how you say that it's a "regressive practice", which is true... I've never really thought about it in that way... And I can see how you think that it's no longer significant after a certain point, since it is a "useless" occupation... You make a very compelling argument, thank you very much for commenting and expanding my point of view.

You're most welcome. I think we differ on what is meant by too young; I hold masturbation to be nothing more than an indulgence past a person's seventh birthday, young children do it frequently and I see no reason to object.

I read books and not recently so I'm afraid I can't help you there. Charlotte Bühler will have observed as much but I appreciate that doesn't make a very useful place to start.
