I have a few questions for you.

Do you ever daydream before bed? How do you daydream if you do?

Also when you close your eyes in bed, you notice those swirling specs of colors and stuff? If you try to gaze past that, its supposed to be relaxing, and when you gaze past them if you are doing it right it should seem like you produce an optical illusion where you seem to be going past them. I used to do this when I was little and it would set me straight into a dream from wakefulness.

Also if you list everything you tried, and I do mean everything, there still things you haven't tried.

Also do you typically think in bed? Does that make it harder to sleep? Do you worry?

They say hugging someone for a full 45 seconds causes decreasion of tension, perhaps that or simulating that briefly could help to relax before bed.

Theres plenty of things to try. Like drinking more water, stop having alternative beverages.

Come at me bro! lol

I replay events or run projections on things that are stressing me.

I use the thousand breaths meditation technique.
Lie flat on my back, flex and relax the parts of my body one at a time to release any residual tension.
Start counting my breaths. Any time I voluntarily move, the count restarts.
Any thoughts which occur are not focused on.

Yes, yes and yes.

I've got ADNFLE.
My sleep cycle is markedly different to normal people's.
I've spoken with my GP and a Specialist about this (the one who diagnosed me). We opted not to use drugs to treat it as neuraleptics have side effects disproportionate to the symptoms.

I rarely have time to think while in bed.
If it isn't my homework then it is joy reading.
Haven't been able to get a decent night's sleep since I was around the age of 14.
Not much works, not even most medications.

People have kept themselves awake by counting to a thousand for generations.

The counting is just a distraction, a way of creating an off-focus to stop me dwelling on whatever thoughts or stresses are keeping me from sleeping.
I generally fall asleep by about 150, I once got to 300

How many restarts does it take you to get to one hundred and fifty consecutive motionless breaths?

In those instances where I start stop autonomically breathing, I tend to count anyway.

And of other causes to reset the count?

?
Voluntary movement?
I just don't move, I twitch from time to time. But I lie still. I thought this was self-evident.

Sometimes, by listening to some slow music, not necessarily jazz or something too mellow like a bedtime song.

Yes, not swirling though, they seem to be unpredictable patterns to me. Really? That's interesting. surprised

Of course, it's the main reason.

That sounds rational enough to be true, although it's unfortunate how my surrounding society don't really practice hugging whether to greet or comfort. sad

sounds stupid but, you could hug a pillow lol, while wrappin a blanket tight around you, so it simulates a hug XD then you can also imagine.. man seems depressing lol but naw they say children who dont have friends, except imaginary friends, they end up smarter because they practice imaginary friends, or are smarter then they practice it because of that. But its alot better to imagine than just, nothing lol.

But Im sure you could find someone to hug you if you tried more also. But theres probably things besides hugging that help too.

Like muscles that arent relaxed use up too much oxygen, so your heart rate and breathign rate stay increased to make up for it and supply your brain and stuff with enough oxygen, so massaging your muscles before bed could help as well. Just be careful with muscles near/at the spine/neck.

These are just bits and peices of info i happen to know, you could probably find out more.

And weak muscles also stay active longer and get tenser using more oxygen than strong ones, because the strong ones dont even need to try that much, while the weak ones do. So exercise can improve that in the long run, btu they say to not go on electronics, or exercise, up to two hours before bed or it'll delay sleep time, also if you stretch stretch slowly and non-painfully, not suddenly because if the muscle gets hurt it tenses up, probably as a defense precaution to not have the whole arm ripped out of its socket or something lol.
