Plenty of people who are not black have curly hair. It's not a "black" thing. Lots of people want their hair to be different than it is naturally. I have great difficult straightening my hair as a Jewish (ugh, I hate being called white. I wish that I could put down something besides that or "other" wink girl, so I only do it when for special occasions. I'd love for my hair to be straight. It depends on the person. You don't have to change how you look unless it's what YOU want.

There is a double standard when it comes to beauty and race. However with your topic, it is a mindset issue that is ingrained on black society that straightening hair is a path to move away from the ugliness of curly hair that has been put on them and move to prettiness of long flowing hair.Black women in particular face this ridicule because they are not seen to want to embrace their natural hair. But what is the crux of the problem is that there are some who get warped into this thinking of straightening their hair to look beautiful. However, there are others who do it as a routine to change their hair to make it manageable.

Flip the coin and look at other beauty arguments. Nose jobs for example. Everybody gets a nose job. But when blacks get one to go for straight nose, they are ridiculed also. So at the end of the day, blacks face more harsher judgments when they take a step to "change" their "blackness".

I never really thought about that...
That does make sense though.
