how long does it usually take to get a new ability?

The first abilities you earn come really fast, but the Majors take a loooong time. You can check your progress toward earning a new one by opening your Player Info in game and visiting the Ghi tab. It shows your Ghi Abilities and there's a blue progress bar at the bottom showing how close you are to a new one.
