Gweh... What do you do with the presents that you get for caroling at the shops? I have 2, but I can't do anythin with them!

How does this caroling thing work? It won't let me carol to the NPCs. And earlier, when it was letting me, the people told me to stop singing or I'd lose my voice. Are there instructions anywhere?
