They can be used as a component in alchemy to make the golden cache. You can also take them to Rubys shop and bring them to Peyo (click on exchang trash) who will turn them into hats for you if you have enough of them.

Most towns trash is popularly used to craft things in Alchemy. Alternatively, you can trade them into various shops for items [though they mostly run pretty cheap in the marketplace and aren't all that great]. Durem Depot turns bugs to ink, Ruby's Rack takes trash, Buttercup Cafe takes flowers, and The Ole Fishing Hole takes tires and boots.
Really though, unless you're into the items are want to take up Alchemy, it's probably more profitable to just sell them.
