Hello,

I began playing Gaia Online four years ago.
I stopped playing mostly because I was tired of not being able to fully enjoy all of Gaia Online's features.

I believe that being what Gaia is, a game. Someone should not have to pay real money to have access to something like items for avatar. And then for there to be items that must be paid with real currency, well I find it vexing to say the least.

My only hope is that there are others like me who believe that it shouldn't cost any real currency to enjoy the simple pleasures of this online game.

Thank you.

You know these purchases are 100% optional, right?

Also, you can just save up Gaia Gold to purchase said items from a user in the future. Takes a while, yes, but that's the fun part~

Gaia needs to make money to.

Magic Hobo

Some people find online shopping to be cathartic.

Also, you can still buy cash items off the marketplace with gold. And if you don't like the process of earning gold in the context of a game... well, just don't ever play Recettear. Or any MMO. Ever.

Rainbow Noob

It's a forum site, actually! But we do have a few games on the side. c:
Another thing Gaia is, is a business. And in order for the site to exist and be here and let us talk all over it, it's gotta make money to pay the people who run it. Luckily though, they've given us a marketplace where users can sell cash-bought items to other users for gold! Free gold! And I think that's pretty awesome, really. :D
And If you're only concerned with making avatars, there's always tektek, which doesn't even require gold. c:

I tell you what. I dare you to go to the Gaming Discussion and say Gaia is a game and see how quickly you're laughed right outta there.
*turns and leaves while laughing*
gaia is a game. oh that's a good one.
next thing you will be telling me that the psp is a mp3 player!
gaia is a game. what a lame asp game then

Gaia isn't a game.
You don't have to buy anything with real currency to use and enjoy all of the features of Gaia.
Most actual games cost real currency.
Gaia Online is a company that employs people to create the items, games, coding, etc. You wouldn't be enjoying this website (or game in your eyes) if people weren't willing to use real currency for things.

items that must be paid with real currency

Okay, let me stop you there. You have three ways to get cash shop items directly (indirectly would be as a gift or through the dumpster or something). One, you could earn the gold to buy it off the marketplace from another user. Two, you could participate in advertisement offers (including watching videos which require no personal information) to collect Gaia Cash and save up for the item. The third is to just buy the site currency to pay for the item. Most commercial MMOs, if they offer pay items, do not grant you access to one let alone two ways to get around the cash method. Gaia didn't have to provide that option to you, but they care about their user base and so provided alternative methods of achieving item orgasms.

Another person complaining about how they can't afford the pixels they want.

Destructive Bunny

I don't even know where to start xd

A lot of games are all about money, Casinos are full of games that are all about money (and fun if you win, I guess).

No, they mustn't.
You are perfectly able to buy Gaia's virtual items through the marketplace. To do this, you can earn enough gold to do so, through using the forums, games, vending, investing wisely, playing Booty Grab... in general, just "play the game" that you believe Gaia to be.

Okay then, so if all cash options were abolished, how would you propose that the "simple pleasure" that is this "online game" you enjoy should be funded?
How will the artists, the programmers, the developers etc. that create and maintain this website be payed? How will the survers be payed for?
Have you any idea how much a site this size costs to run?

The problem with this stance is that you are only thinking of yourself.
"I want to play this game, and I don't want to pay any money for it."
Well, good for you. But unfortunately, the world has other people in it, and websites this size don't magically appear out of thin air.

Kawaii Carnivore

Well, you can still get nice items while not spending a single penny . True enough , it takes longer . For example , my Radio Jack was a long quest of 2 months . But having big goals is fun . Not always easy , true, but after crying tears of blood , you are really happy to have the item you want. And as goza stated , it ' s quite awesome to have a marketplace when you can get those said items with just your hard work playing those games. Some others community sites are not like that .

And , Gaia is not a charity. It needs people to create , repair , update the site . It needs people to plan events , new games .It needs artists too , to make those awesome items you are wearing. And how can those people live if we don 't buy them items ?

I see it like paying your taxes , like those you pay to live in a place . Except that Gaia is much cooler since you get valuable pixels in exchange . And the Thank You letter is to show that we are grateful of all the staff ' s hard work . Which I am .

Tonight I thought it would be fun to jump on Gaia. I honestly haven't been on in a long time. I was admittedly quite stoned. And as I was looking through all the new awesome items I thought "s**t man, I wish I didn't have to pay money for these things." I also don't have the time to sit at my computer and make all the gold required to purchase them. So I came over here and wrote this spiel. Sorry, this isn't the first time something like this has happened, probably won't be the last. I need to learn to stick to imagur when I'm high. Happy turkey day.

Some of us like playing with the economy to earn gold. One of the first things they tell you when you join is "Buy low, sell high". Sometimes you make the right investments and win, and sometimes you don't.

So... you want items, but you don't want to pay for them, nor do you want to invest the time in the game to earn them?
You just want to be instantly handed everything your poor little heart desires?
Bless your socks.

Also, "I'm not responsible for what I say online, because I'm high/drunk/tired" is the most overused of weak excuses.
Almost right up there with "Oh no! That wasn't me that posted that! It was my stupid little sister/brother/cousin/cat hacking into my account!"
