Welcome to Gaia! ::

As I said before, isn't the whitelist enough to prevent these things from being seen? User's who have it disabled will obviously see them, but isn't that their own faults? And these images in these threads get reported and deleted ASAP, otherwise they'd still be there. So someone makes another account to post more, they could do that ANYWHERE, and still, they'd get reported and deleted.
Since the issue is mostly about the CP that shows up, no one can stop it from first being posted, but reporting it gets it removed. (I've done my fair share of reporting indecent pictures like that from the forums and all have been taken care of.) Child Porn is a serious issue and should be handled directly with the people involved, not the entire forum.

Disregarding the CP, this whole argument is similar to one that complains about a forum where members post "********" over and over in big bold letters as the entire post. These posts will get reported and deleted, but Gaia wont turn on a permanent filter for just that forum.

guilty by association is not the way to go

it should be handled on a case-by-case basis
i shouldnt be punished for a stupid childs decision to take pictures of themselves and another stupid child or stupid adults decision to keep and/or post those pictures

it also isnt my fault that there are no longer any clearly visible or enforced rules about what goes on in GD (we all know that the stickies are now silly formalities in that forum)... this isnt 2003/04/05, as much as some of us wish it could be again

honestly, if gaia hasnt done much about it now, i dont see them moving to do much about it in the near future unless the government does somehow get involved and they need to cover their asses real quick
and if they can bring on new mods to our forum and yet things worsen to the point of where GD is now comparable to the retarded younger sibling of /b/, then i have hardly any faith that they will be able to clean this up, let alone care enough about it

i hear faint cries from the past calling for perma-IP bans......
We'd only infiltrate the chatterbox
Reading thru most of the posts here...I'll just keep it simple. If /b/ is still around then i wouldnt worry about GD being closed. And besides, before trying to make their people go on with the law, Gaia should try to respect the law first before trying to make an example out of others. And you may not understand what im talking about but some ppl in this thread will and thats good enough...

That's all in the "user" area of the skeleton though. The main body still has the IMG tag to access the html directly. Anything inside [] in the post box is accessed from a class deeply rooted in the code itself. However, things like smilies, are an added "user" class.
Text parsing. There I just solved everything that you bitched about.

A users post still passes through several systems when it's added into the system, if it's in the GD, or going to the GD simply strip out the IMG tags on submit or load. They strip out img tags on load now. It's no where near as hard a solution as you're trying to make it out to be.
I'm sorry, but I can't trust gaia with the notion of text parsing. Even if they used it once that would give them more power than anything. All of our words may be translated into whatever they wish. If gaia ever used it to alter a user's intended posts other than *'s for the filter they have now, I'm afraid that I personally cannot partake in posting on this site at all.
They already use it to disable image tags not on the white list and if you have choosen to not see images at all.

And the ability to turn words into *'s is the same power as being able to force the word "the" into the word "cocks". all forums have these features built in, or easily built into the system by the owners.
And where is this whitelist, if I may ask?
Maintained by Gaia, don't know what exactly is on it. But if you go to account settings and tell it to only let you see white-listed images then all the others have the IMG tags stripped out when browsing the forums.
By user demand only then. If they take it out of user-controlled and into gaia trusted only, this site is censored media. And I'm not living in China for a reason.

Oh, sure, and while we clamp down on the pornography, why not also put the boot-heel down on the throat of creativity?
You sir are a dolt.

To be frank, prohibition generally leads to greater forms of creativity as members of the public seek out new ways to express themselves be it underground movements of the old, or new ways of accomplishing the old.

So technically I'd be raping creativity so it could give birth to the next generation of creators.
You know, I've been waiting forever for a suggestion like this.

And in my opinion, I really, really like this idea. It would make the GD itself much more easy to browse.
I don't like running into piles of s**t, let alone images such as described in the OP's post.

I like the idea too. But does GD really constantly post n***s of so called children? I've only visited GD a couple times and learned Lifestyle Discussion is a way better place to get an actual ******** discussion going.

I know my guy friends hate seeing girls on the GD posting boob pics then going to their profiles and seeing that awesome numbah~

Dont like. If someone wanted to create a nice discussion topic with a banner and all, they'd be incapable of doing so. I think it honestly needs to be moderated more, but for that to happen we need to report these things more.

_________________________

Tough. The Gd as it stands needs to have it's users reined in and taught that just because they like to do something doesn't mean that they are going to be allowed to. Gaia not enforcing that is what lead to this problem int he first place.

Further more if the Admins ever do get around to actually splitting the GD into two forums, one for actual GD and one for the users who like to troll and be 'prommies' then the image banning would stick with the later and not the former meaning the good discussion that wants a banner could have it, so long as they went to the new GD.

@ boldend: this is for the chatterbox. A split-off is not needed for that reason.

What I think is that there should be some sort of a coded program that dissallows certain types of pics. Unfortunately, it does not exist anywhere on the internet.
All we can do is keep on reporting that stuff. This a PG-13 site. Not an X.

The problem with censoring images in one area will only cause them to move. How many people will actually be discouraged posting images when the GD bans it? How many of them will just move to the CB and other forums and post their images there? And while I'm not against the idea, I just feel it's only masking the problem. It'd be better if we could grab this by its roots, by telling new users

IN HUGE RED LETTERS

That posting nude pictures of themselves will put the user in severe danger. Danger on the forums, by banning, but also in real life, attracting unwanted attention to you.

Wow chill out.
If you want to block images in one forum, block them in all because the trolls will just move to other forums. Things won't change until the people become bored of it.

And honestly, they like seeing you angry.

As for the "child porn" I honestly believe that no one has the right to tell anyone they can't take suggestive pictures of themselves and send it to others. They know what they're doing. (But it is against the TOS, I know that.)
And for the most part, they're sent through PMs and Emails.

Nothing you guys say or do is going to make it better.

I think they should get the law involved instead. Get authorities to track down the people doing it and toss them in juvie. Maybe when they get a cold hard dose of reality they'll get a clue that breaking the rules isn't cute or funny, and that there are serious consequences.

Anymore kids are never taught that there are consequences to negative actions. They get away with anything and everything. That they get away with this with no lasting consequences isn't going to do any good. Delete their threads? They'll make new ones. Ban them? They'll make new accounts and brag about being banned. Arrest them? Maybe they'll finally get the idea.

But its useless, I'm useless against them... They are beating me with ease...

This is a form of delinquency. I highly doubt that they are doing it because they believe ifs "cute or funny". They are more likely doing it to get attention. Think about it, who's parents wouldn't notice thier child posting naked pictures of them on the internet? Mine has her own computer and I'd still notice because I pay attention.
Arresting them and slapping them with the "sexual offender" label has the potential to make things a whole lot worse. If they chose this option they should proceed with caution.

OP: I've been thinking about this for awhile and I think its a good idea. People are going to argue that its not fair; it isn't, but they clearly cannot be trusted with image posting. I hope that Gaia does do this. It would be nice to have some actual discussion in the GD again rather than Troll-n-Pic dropz lawlz.

If the trolls do move they would be in forums where the problem would be more than likely to be spread out enough that they can be taken care of quickly, as this wouldn't affect the whole forum.

Gaia: Just give us advance notice so we can run when the s**t hits the SF. I'm sure they will be angry.

Nyadriel: If they simply just spit it off again, wouldn't they just move in to the other forum and devour it??

haligonian: Its illegal if you're under the age of 18. Furthermore if the person that receives said pic is over the age of 18, they can be charged with child porn. Read laws. Its good for you. There is NO reason at all that this should be tolerated in any form.

That's good, because that is where most GD topics belong.

Honestly, this might be a good step. The GD is a mess of kids trying to be cool on the interwebs. Most of their threads belong in the CB anyways.

Amen.

Everyone crying "censorship" seems to be missing the point that um, we're talking child pornography here. I think keeping these kids safe is more important than keeping your right to post bullshit on the internet.
