You're just describing the attitude of the GD other forums wouldn't have that same mentality. Trolls pop up and people report. It would be annoying for a while but then it would pass.

This. I would have absolutely no problem reporting them, I'm like the queen of reporting trolls anyway.

Nuke the ******** thing please, Gaia. Trolling is one thing, trading illegal material is another. Enough is enough.

I hope Gaia itself doesn't get screwed for this. Child porn ain't no joke.

And add onto that about 100 other people to report a day, plus topics that actually belong there being pushed into the back of the forum?

neutral It just wouldn't work unless pics and links, then resulting in the forums as a whole, being removed from Gaia.
And Gaia without forums is nothing at all. Over two thirds of the website's users, most very active cash consumers, would leave, and Gaia would go bankrupt in five days, tops.

That is a truly astounding slippery slope argument you have going there. You seriously think Gaia would get rid of ALL THE FORUMS just because some trolls start crying everywhere in the wake of their playground being destroyed? That's so ridiculous I'm halfway inclined to think you're trolling yourself.

Anyway OP, I think you might be on to something!

Well considering the fact that "because the GD will attack other forums" is like 99% of the reasons given to counteract good ideas to fix the Gd problem at some point we have to realize that we either are actually prepared to deal with that, or that we need to prepare to deal with that because we can't just leave the Gd in it's current state.

when there is one reason, and one reason alone standing between the administration and 20+ good ideas then we need to come up with counter measures to that reason.

And as I've stated before, will state again, and will always stand by is that we are more prepared to handle the GD trying to start this than we wish to believe.

The GD spills out at it is, and we still manage to abide. There are still plenty of people reporting. And if the mods are given notice of this change taking place they will be ready. The GD has problems because no one reports. Yes some of the fourms outside of the Gd have problems (like the Cb and art discussion forum) but unlike the GD it isn't because they aren't having reports sent in it's because there are two many. And since reports can be categorized during the GD s**t storm that MAY occur the mods can target the trolls and spam and then come back to deal with the spam.

I'm just tired of idea after idea being thrown out for the stupid reason that GD might throw a fit. It's like we are letting trolls take over the site because most people are too afraid of them pitching a fit if we change anything.

You make it sound like the GD would organize a take over.
They aren't going to "attack" other forums. They're going to spam it out until people get so bored of only seeing spam in their once-favorite forums that they give up on reporting.

This is EXACTLY the way the GD went. I watched it, as it fell through the cracks.
Spammers, trolls, whores, and flamers hopped in, the discussions were pushed to the back, and people stopped bothering to report after a while because it's become pointless.
Even after one thread gets deleted, there's three that have been created to take it's place.

I don't know about you, but I would rather have it contained in a hell hole of a forum than spilling out where we're nearly forced to look at it or leave forums.

Even when mods ban someone, they just keep coming back.
Ask any LDer, GDer, or EDer alive. In the LD, we got this astronaughty kid who keeps popping up.
In the GD, we have god knows how many trolls per day that won't leave.
In the ED, we're overrun. Especially since they added that "cool topics" thing at the top of forums, with a link to the ED.
Even the AMC gets trolled to hell on occasion.

My point is, disabling picture posting in the GD would doom us all to a forum-based website without actual forums.
Just endless pages of spam, spam, spam and more spam.

It sounds like a good solution to me.
But they might go to other forums to post porn. =/

True that the other forums are better member-moderated, but that's probably only because there aren't craploads of threads to report. IMO it is a bad thing especially if the trolls decide to organize and spam threads so that the first 5 pages of every thread is all illegal pics.
I still think you are greatly underestimating the power of members who want to see their forums clean. Time and time again members have organized groups to go out reporting. I think we should try it and see if the users step up and show us they are also tired of seeing the GD pitch fits and push the admins around.

Hell, I know a bunch of old mod-wannabes from back in my hey-day, if you deactivate the report timer on our accounts we'd clean the s**t out the forums and keep the forums reported until the GD learned throwing a fit isn't going to get them what they want.
I used to be the same way but after a while just reported the threads that REALLY needed reporting. Still I think you are greatly underestimating the ability of trolls and overestimating the power that mods have to stop them. The mod force is very small when compared to that of the rest of the userbase. Should these trolls start spamming the crap out of every forum, the mods would be overwhelmed (their reports already backed up as it is). Until they get a much more sizable staff, just letting them spill out is going to do more harm than good.

We are both saying the same thing, in different words. The way you make it sounds is that if we take away the GD from them they will spread and make the other forums hell until we give them back what they want. Which is pretty much the same as taking over since it would teach them that any time they want something they just need to troll other forums until the admins cave to their requests. By your logic, if they troll the other forums successfully they will have taken over the site.

And don't preach to me about the loss of the GD. Started in 03, left the GD in 07 not because I was defeated and didn't feel like reporting anymore but because between a girlfriend and college I didn't have time for Gaia period. And even though the majority of users don't report in the GD anymore, many still do. It got to a point for me where I didn't even post in the GD anymore, I was spending every minute reporting.

As for trolls just coming back, I've already thought up solutions and suggested them but they all got shot down because people were afraid it would lead to the GD trolling other forums.

There are solutions but they all seem to get shot down for some ridiculous idea that the trolls will migrate to other forums and NO ONE WILL EVER TRY TO STOP THEM OR BE ABLE TO STOP THEM.

Well Gaia is always working on getting more mods.

And honestly I think they need to start paying some mods. Hire a team of 5 on site mods schedule them to overlap their work hours and use them as sort of the Mod hit squad so we have a constant presence that can coordinate the volunteers or be there when we have no one else.

Yes a small number of mods hinders us, but Gaia is always looking for more. And, heck maybe they should consider asking a few mods to come out of retirement (*coughZahir and Miyukicough*).
Why just the GD?
You must agree that all images should be banned on gaia

Which would be thinking backwards, because people post art and etc in other forums
Censoring the internet is a terrible idea.
That's all I have to say.
I may disagree with a lot of that s**t.

But taking away everyone's rights for a few rule breakers is like punishing all your children because one got a low grade.
it's ******** up and wrong.

And the GD comes to the rescue...
Because the GD is the main forum with the problem that this would help stop? Seems pretty simple to me.
@Commissar White: They did the same thing with the room naming in games. People got over it.
I'm no expert on the website's design, but I am pretty sure that it was derived from a generic forum script, like many of what we see on other free forums. It becomes a bit difficult to alter one section of the script when it accesses a class, as I'm sure the way this is structured. When posting an image, the tags are lines of code that access this script directly, called BBCode. I'm afraid deleting a function of the programming is nearly impossible to do without rearranging the entire language. Since Gaia did not invent this language, it is unlikely they will be able to alter it.

I have seen trolls and explicit images in the CB and the Exchange
If you desire censorship for a cause, you must make it more defined

A while back (maybe it's still happening) in the CB when you ignored someone they could still post in your thread, but everywhere else on the site someone that was ignored couldn't. I think they could do this.
@Chocolate Pope: To the extent that it happens in the GD? Really? rolleyes

That's an external class. the IMG tag is in the original forum code functions.
Net censorship is supposed to be reasonable and follows under nondiscrimination
This is begging to sound more like a forum grudge
