Welcome to Gaia! ::

Well, I am a mother and I do not dress "frumpy" but I would argue that she did not dress frumpy before. She had a cute bonnet. And it made sense because she was selling hats. I did not look like ugly frumpy people clothes, it had a little cleavage even. She did not dress like a 70 year old woman before.

I also don't like the new look of the NPC's. It's not that they're thin. It's that they're skeletal.

Anime style generally has thin characters, but then so does real life. Most of the world isn't fat, so it's normal. Anime's style was borrowed heavily from Disney, and the design for the bodies was kind of a "blank slate".

It had to deviate from a normal body to give a sort of "cartoonish" effect, but be close enough that it would stay plausible in the mind. Alot of money went into developing just the right look on the Disney end, and then the Japanese took it to a whole other wonderful level.

Our NPC's adhered to that "blank slate" style until the recent updates. They were slim, but their additions added to the personality image of the character. Moira needed her curves and muscle combo so she'd appear to be confident, brave, and tough. That's what an animated/illustrated character's image is supposed to do: tell you about the character.

Now? All I'm being told is that there was a famine in Gaia but nobody noticed or something.

Next thing you're gonna say is that Lion King is a totally and completely original work. rolleyes
While it is true that Lion King ripped off Kimba the White Lion, Tezuka, the "father" of anime, was heavily influenced by the Disney film Bambi for the development of facial proportions for his animations.
I liked her original bonnet as well. But it makes sense that she no longer wears it since her main pride was that it was one of a kind, and she gave it away in mass as a thank you.
I'm arguing that big puffy sleeves and a huge bow in back are NOT the standard dress for someone in their late 20's to mid 40's. It's much more like a comfy dress worn by a woman in her 60's to 70's reliving her youth. Bloomers and dresses were both kinda big and puffy. Modern clothing is more sleek and sexual in nature. Her dress is much more appropriate now.

Actually the bolded part that you bolded is in fact true. (I forget the person's name) but look at the old Anime's. (IE Astro Boy) they were influenced by Walt Disney himself and in turn made their characters somewhat look like Disney's style. Pretty much most (if not all) Anime's orgin is Disney influenced.

Sluttier?? Nah, sweet-heart! NO WAY they became sluttier.

Ruby used to show off her boobs a lot more, the only think she's showing off after all is her arms: that's where you see more skin, not on her boobs!
Moira showed off her boobs a lot more too, and so did Vanessa!

overall, they ADAPTED the clothing to their shop style! i'd hate to have an hairdresser showing her boobs like that, or sasha's "naked" top!

But Ruby isn't allowed to look hot and sexy? What was your phrase... Oh, yes a "cheap MILF".

Her clothes are less revealing now, yet she is a cheap MILF. Ok.
I don't mind the new outfits and shops, but I was taken aback by how skinny the new art was. I don't really care at the end of the day, but Moira really looked a bit skeletal there.

Edit: I don't think they look any sluttier, though. And it would've been nice if they had updated everyone's art (even thought everyone would then become a size 0) because all the other poor shopkeeps are left out.

For some shop keepers it was simply TOO large of a change. I can understand a new drawing style and new poses, and to an extent new clothes....but some are changed far too drastically. The clothes if changed at all should at least be kept in the same style. For most they do this but some are changed entirely. Ruby I didn't even recognize, before I double checked the shop name I thought we got a new shopkeeper. Some of these characters had trademark looks. Ian's hat for example, it was even made into an item. They were well known and loved as they were. Some change is good when it's making something better, but change for the sake of change...I think it just does more damage than good. You had something people were comfortable, familiar, and fond of and you just disposed of it entirely without any real need for it.

As a side note....
Sasha creeps me out. While I agree many if not most of them are unrealistically skinny Sasha is the one that seems to go a little too far. Her wrists and shoulders/neck area give the strongest impression of anorexia. ._. It's sad because if she weren't so anorexic looking I think I might have actually liked her new look. The clothes are still her style and I like her pose, it's just ruined by the rest of her.

You know, skinny people actually DO exist that aren't anorexics. It's really weird how most people discussing this find it so inconceivable that someone in the world can actually be skinny without being anorexic. Sasha just looks scrawny, and she's always looked that way.

I realize that. I didn't say ALL the girls looked anorexic I just said SASHA looks anorexic which means yes I do realize there are skinny people who aren't anorexics. But honest to god Sasha does look anorexic to me and I did state why.

I disagree with you on ALL points.

First of all: sluttier? Unless we magically moved to bizzarro land where more cloths = slutty I can't agree.

Sasha: Now has a shirt

Vanessa: Now has a shirt

Moira: has a longer shirt and a shorter mid-drift. The only difference is that she is wearing less in the jacket department. That doesn't equal slutty and never will.

Ruby: The dress is not slutty. It's a long flowing dress that if you saw in RL it wouldn't show off many curves. She has ALWAYS shown her cleavage (seriously, check out the previous images of her, her dress was very low cut). What you don't like is that she has a sensual pose instead of an indifferent pose. I have a feeling that if she was still doing her nails you wouldn't even care that she was in this outfit.

As for skinnier:
In some ways yes. But your defense that "gaia shouldn't be influenced by anime" is mute because this place started off as an anime forum. It's always been anime influenced.
If Sasha's face rounder then there wouldn't be as much of a focus on how vertical the art tends to be and you wouldn't focus so much on her waist. Also if the neck was thicker it would help. It's just the style playing against itself.
The girls aren't yet anorexic tho, very thin yes, anorexic no. Once I see the admins drawing them with ribs and hip bones sticking out I will say that it's anorexic. As of now it's just a style that likes wasp waists. While I would like the characters to have more defined muscles gaia doesn't tend to do this with their female characters.

Exactly. People backing their reasons for thinking she's anorexic by saying some pretty stupid things like "eat a burger" and being "shameful" for having that kind of body is idiotic. It's a huge slap in the face to the ones who don't have disorders and can't help the way they look. I know a girl who's 5'8" and 95lbs who eats a ton and she's not bulimic or anything.

Perhaps if it weren't just people like the girl you know being represented in the females, it wouldn't be such a problem.

Because a fully clothed woman can't possibily be slutty, amirite?
