Welcome to Gaia! ::

Storming-Moon-Pup
I truly do hate the ads that "pop" up, make noise, that constantly move, easily clickable when you don't want to, and the ones that auto start downloading something if clicked.

I don't have an add blocker to begin with so this really slows my pc down if a I have alot of taps open or have a game/music running as well. 90% if the time when I get on gaia now I have sound turned off.

Also for those of you who say they are seeing a link to porn. Are you sure its really porn? I've never seen anything like this and I've been around for years. Are you sure your not just seeing an ad for an online game? A few online games have skimpy dressed "leaders" in their ads.

Yes, quite sure it's porn.

gaia has ads,because they need money.

//end

I understand that they need money, but I am going to block my ads from now on since a few ads that I saw on my account had porn on it. I am under age in the state of California where both Gaia and I are from showing porn to minor is extremely illegal. Also, nasty!

xxihyphymexicanxx v2

so pornography is ok to have on gaia? really ? they are that desperate for money? i'm sorry but you know gaia could get into trouble for showing naked people and people in undergarments and other items similar to that, which is considered porn where i live
FYI i live in the state of utah so yeah alot more strict things here
us children are not to be exposed to things like that and if enough people would take screen shots of this and file it with the authorities i guarantee this site would be shut down
bottom line gaia needs to do away with ads and figure another way to earn money for its website

ok it dont happen all the time but since i registered it has happened 3x so yeah i think that is a real problem

It happened to me the other night, it was the first time for me. I thought I was the only person who saw the porn ads on my account. I am going to block ads from my account today so this doesn't happen again. I am disappointed with Gaia. You should do the same since you live in a state where that is illegal completely.
gaia doesn't pick those ads.
they can't decide the ads to be shown here.

Gaia can't decide the ads to be shown here?

What research do you have to back that up?

Cause if they genuinely can't fix their problems then I rather think that I'm never going to be able to white-list them. This is their site and if I'm not paying them to maintain it then what am I supporting?

They could fix their ad problem but I suggest that they feel the issue isn't worth the manpower required to fix it, otherwise we wouldn't have a problem in the first place. Or would have only briefly had one.

That's what I've seen on sites generally. But AS Roma is saying it works differently, I'm curious since I don't know the particulars of Gaiaonline, and they might very well know things I missed.

My opinion is they could fix their ad problem, most sites can; and actually it doesn't really take that much time to filter ads. Just load any ads that you're willing to run on Gaia, glance at it -no pop-ups, sound, video- and you've removed 90% of problems. Run a Malware check on the lot and you've got 90% of the remainder. One should easily get 600+ in an hour, and since they have full time employees...

Gaia can do that I think? They should have someone who is not an admins like one of us to do it. Many Gaians would do it volunteerly and others they can just give them an item that is on their wishlist. That would be cheaper for them than giving out Gaia cash

Been on Gaia since nearly the beginning, I don't mind the adds and if I did that much I'd get something with GC. It was the summer before my junior year of high school when I joined Gaia and I graduated in 05 if that says anything.

Honestly Gaia Cash is virtually free to Gaia. We pay to support it and it gets up some nicer stuff to make us feel better. But it's actually nothing other then an incentive that they're making for a lot of people. So i'm baffled why they feel that an impossible thing to do. Cause you're totally right they could get some of use to easily volunteer for ad sorting duty. Sure it'd take a bit to set up with trustworthy individuals.

I have my adds turned on, but I really dislike the adds with sound especially when I'm in a quiet setting and forgot to turn off my speakers.
I have allowed myself to see ads. Hehehehe that sounds kinda funny. 3nodding razz

I only mind the ads because they block me from being able to use the site, overlapping links or opening up when I am trying to add on an item in the clothing room...

I realize that its hard to make sure the ads don't do this sort of thing in every browser, but I thought I would just mention that I would turn them back on if they didn't do this.

Happy Monday everyone! Thanks so much for the continued feedback over the weekend. I've passed along your suggestions and ideas to the ads team, as well as your feedback on why you will or will not white-list ads on Gaia.

As always, if you have any more ideas, let us know! biggrin

I personally think that a more careful selection of ad providers on gaia's end would solve many of the problems, even if people still had adblock. I would suggest going through the default whitelist that adblock has and going through those companies only, or at least as much as possible. Then, even if someone has adblock, your ads will still get through. But they'll be unobtrusive types. smile

As it is now, with adblock on, I don't actually see any of these unobtrusive ads. Which makes me sad, because it would seem you don't use ads through those providers. It also means I can't give you ad revenue, because I'm not willing to be annoyed at every turn, and get viruses on my computer for your sake. sad

EDIT: okay, as a curiosity, I turned it off for a bit, and I can definitely concur with what people have been saying, for the most part. The ads really do slow down the loading of the page, almost to the point of becoming unusable. I guess I never realized how many ads there were, either. ^^;

However, most of the ads I've seen have been static images that I think would have already fit the requirements to be on the default whitelist. The providers probably just haven't made a deal to be added to the list. I would hope most of the ads would be like that, and the porn/sound/etc ads are just being talked about so much because they're the ones that would get complaints.

I'm deciding now whether to turn it back on or leave it off for a bit...

I have mixed feelings on this topic, not having an adblocker of any kind, I see all the ads, and agree with those about the noise-makers and pop-ups. Those are annoying and really slow my dinosaur of a PC down.
But again, Gaia is going about this the wrong way, there are constant complaints about how Gaia staff is some kind of sell out for ignoring most of the requests of their users. Like how there are all kinds of bugs and stuff around the site that need fixed, but they seem to think we don't have enough games to play instead.
I can understand the need for revenue, since none of us actually pay for these accounts, their maintenance costs have got to come from somewhere. While I don't mind doing my part for the community, I do have a few suggestions. Though like most if not all my suggestions for the staff, it'll be ignored or I'll get quoted a bunch of times with "TL;DR" posts.

1) This one's a common one, be a bit more strict on the ads, politely ask the sponsors to do like YouTube does and have "Click for sound" features on all the annoying noise-making ads. As far as the downloading ones, throw those on spaces users will rarely have to click on, cause I seriously doubt it'll make a difference if you throw them on the bottom of the pages. They still load regardless, don't they? Wiki sites do it all the time. Could even hunt down those wiki ads and go with those companies, since they'd already be used to having their ads on the bottom of every page anyway.

2) As a member of the zOMG Community, simply due to the fact I play and enjoy the game. If you're going to give up on zomg. Do us all a favor and bring it out of beta mode, just shut it down for a while, find every possible bug and fix them. You already have a list of the bugs we know about, there was a thread on it a while back, where you guys pulled frequently mentioned bugs and fixed them. A bug-fix spree not good enough, then take some time and open up Aeaka or whatever its called, already got a barton regular talking about robots overrunning the place. Why not use that?

3) I hear all the time that Gaia used to be SO much cooler, then it came down to sucking up to the sponsors while still preaching it was all about helping us out. In the mean time you have people quitting, because your fighting to give us an online home, has seemed to cut into your actually focusing on making that home a place we really want to stay in. Sure it looks all nice and pretty on the outside, but stay for a few months and you see the cracked counter tops, the leaky roof, some of the foundation is falling apart. While I understand the need to pay the bills, what I don't understand is why that need became more important than the reason you have to pay them.

I don't know, those are just my opinions, take them as you please.
Spend more than 200 G-Cash, so I was able to get my ads disabled, and the site is much more faster and enjoying. heart ^W^

I might be a b@#7 but I think I spend enough money on Gaia every month to not have to see ads. I still have to type pro-dish ad slogans when I am playing Booty Grab though.
I also participate in the cash tree stuff. But I feel like I do my part to support Gaia and should not have to watch ads while I play.
