But some people also would like privacy when it comes to their items & combinations. I feel both sides of the coin should be supported & respected here. If people don't wish to disclose what they are wearing, nobody should force them to. It is convenient to view equipped lists, but it's fair to think of both sides on this issue. Figuring out what people are wearing isn't always so painstakingly hard, but I can see how somebody might feel let down if they can't view an equipped list to find out right away. At least the system is fair right now.
I don't understand the privacy reason. I really really don't. I mean, your avatar is obviously showing the items you're wearing. But you are right that it is fair (in a way). o.O;

Copying avatars, one can go research it out themselves too. Hiding the items may help slow down other people's copying, but it's not going to prevent it either. So, is it enough of a reason to balance the convenience for other people who want to know certain item/pose?
This bugs me a lot, as well.

I hate when a new RIG comes out, and a bunch of people are wearing new items. Or with EIs and stuff. Since RIGS and EIs, we have had such a influx of new items that I simply cannot keep up. It is sooooo annoying when I can't find out what the item is because they have their equipped list off.

[] Steps to seeing hidden items.

1) Got to tektek's Dream Creator
2) Go to user's profile
3) Copy the part bolded in the profile url. www.gaiaonline.com/profiles/?u=######
4) Go back to tektek's Dream Creator
5) Go to Search Items
6) Paste what you copied. u=######
7) the ##### = numbers copied from the profile url.
cool Click search
9) Dream creator shows you whats on that ava.
Only if people have public viewable profile. Of course, I would say it's bad business to make a user want to use a third party tool for things like this.
I understand the idea that its frustrating if you really want to know about an item and can't "just look it up" in their equipped list. I'm not saying it should not be made to be always viewable.

But honestly what pisses me off about this argument is that many people who shout about wanting to be able to see others' equipped stuff simply are aggravated over one thing: it means things aren't easiest for them. In this regard, why should I have to bend to your will just because it makes it easier for you when these are my items? (If someone wants to make the argument that, no, my items technically belong to Gaia...then they are no more yours to see by right than they are mine to hide).

Also, many people have made it clear that it's fairly easy to look for these items yourself whether it be via tektek or through the mp or whatnot. So why should others' abilities be taken just so someone else has an easier time?

This is odd, really, I'm not pro-ing or conning this argument. It's just that I don't condone the arguments given...

The items I'm wearing on this account do stand out & can be very easily identified. This is true. But on my other account, I had a user tally up everything in price from my equipped list, then ask for a donation. Stating to me "You're wearing_____ amount of gold in items, you can definitely spare a donation." And they admitted they tallied up my equipped list. I felt very uncomfortable with that.

For whatever reason people have for concealing it, it is fair to allow them to. Perhaps some users are not aware that it upsets others that they can't see what is being worn. I never thought anybody would be really annoyed by it, & I'm sorry if I did anything to annoy anybody by hiding my list. That isn't my intent with why I do hide it. If somebody wanted to know the name of an item I was wearing, I'd tell them. I just would prefer to keep it concealed for my own privacy. I never change this avatar, but I do on my mule & I felt like I was being sized up for wealth. And it makes me fear being a target of a hacking or begging attempt.

ChrisJS: I am also on the fence about this one. Both sides do have valid reasons, but both sides' reasons aren't strong enough to overcome the other. That's probably why Gaia left this feature as is.

Radiophonic: I can't say much about the "expensive" avatar, since I never experienced that problem. I don't know whether hiding equip lists would make any difference when you can easily tell an avatar is expensive looking with whatever expensive item is seen on plain view.
The site offers a feature that displays all of the items a user is wearing, and it's easy to find/use. No access to the users profile is required.

If the user has a post in the forums anywhere, click that box under their avatar that says "Online/Offline" , a drop box should appear, and click "View Equipped List". This brings up a box that displays all the items they have equipped, as well as links to the marketplace/shop links for those items.

All you really need is the users name and any public post by them, which you can search for from the primary forums page if you have their username.

edit: didn't know you could turn this feature off too, please disregard then.
People who hide items just want attention (pm me to find out!) or are insanely egotistic (everyone is gonna steal my super awesome original idea!).

Why?

Because they all say you could just use tektek or ask Q&A to find out, so they are actively acknowledging you can find out no matter what, they just want to make it harder for you.

What dicks.

Agreed.

It's always annoyed me that the feature exists. Sometimes I'll see a person wearing the one thing I need to complete a look but they'll have their items hidden and I really am not about to stroke someone's ego just to find out what they're wearing.

Of course, I've seen people block it just for the sake of aggravating people. Kinda pathetic and pointless, seeing that anybody can track any item down with relative ease,.

This. This is why I hide mine.
I don't care about stolen avatars. or ideas. I do it to annoy a friend of mine. and that's all.
we "fight" to get items before the other person. and If I have something she cant have it . She has it I can have it etc. It's childish and immature but I ******** love it :3
We're basically sisters. Annoying and bitchy sisters. and This even happens IRL. between us.

ANYWAY.
If anyone really wants to know what items Im wearing they can just PM me of comment me.
It's not that big of a deal.
I'm not SO FULL OF myself that I;m going to tell someone that I wont be giving out what my items are just because I found it first.
(Insert nyeah nyeah nyah nyah nyeah nyeah here)
It's what happened with the Talsi Sash and me. I got a lot of PM's
but I responded to every one just as nicely as I always will.

For the people that hide both equipped items and profiles.
Well another person with out their head up their a** will come along and you'll see what item it was. It's not that big a deal.
And if it takes to long, its not too hard to go looking for the item.
It takes me MAYBE 10min to flip through the entire market. not counting the under 100g things.
and if not. and I'm sure it's a new item TekTek.org will have it.

and again if NOT.
The avatar sub forum probably knows what it is. and could give an answer rather quickly.

There's tons of ways around it if your actually willing to try

Well I dont want anyone knowing what I am wearing. I have my own style of avatars and dont want anyone to copy them really. They can simply ask me what item is what. And there IS tektek.org.

Except I can copy you right now if I damned well pleased. All it takes is a free gender change and to equip my items. Whoops, sense of identity shattered! This is because the items themselves are available to everyone, and not exclusively to you. And I doubt someone's sense of identity relies so much on how they used some of the thousands of items at their disposal.

What about people who hide their items and then refuse to answer PMs about what they're wearing? What sense does that make? Besides, nobody ever copies someone else's avatar exactly. Been here 6 years and I've never, ever seen two avatars look exactly alike by accident. It was always a joint effort on both their parts for whatever reason.

The only true reason to hide items is because:

1. Someone would hate to see someone else with as nice an avatar as their own.
2. Elitism. "I know what this item is/I can afford it and you don't/cant! Ha ha!"
3. The misguided idea that someone will use their style to advance in the avatar arenas.
4. Attention. They like getting a bazillion PMs from strangers inquiring about the items.

For people who use the argument of "nobody should look like me!!1!" I say: so the feck what if they do? The very fact that these items are available to anyone who chooses to own them means anyone is available to arrange the items as they see fit. If they choose to arrange their items in a similar (or exact) manner as yours, so what? What's the big deal?

I can't even think what to say about this. I don't support such behavior, but it's also not against the rules 100% either. eek

As someone else said some people turn off the option to deter beggars. I've had people contact me from seeing I have a certain item on my equipped list and beg for gold, (or even worse beg for that item!) because of that.

Agreed. ******** privacy, Gaia items are not U.S. postal mail, and it's to Gaia's advantage to promote openness.

Beggars will beg if they see it on your avatar; it's not a direct result of the equipped list. I'm sure beggars aren't blindly going through forum threads and checking all of the equipped lists to see who's got that one item; they see something on your avatar which prompts them to PM you.
