Im afraid the only hope for fixing the GD now would be to delete it and let the troublemakers stream out into the other forums where they'd get reported if they tried anything.

That's always an option.

Yeah, just like that since you can't lie about account age since Gaia knows how old your account is .

That's exactly the point, though. What happens in GD site-not-allowed's problem. I've seen more threads spring up about this, and the last time it happened GD almost called war.

These threads are not helping anything.

If "GD" were some monolithic, self sustaining entity using their own servers and being entirely separate from Gaia, your argument would have a lot more validity. While this thread was started by someone who posts in SF regularly, other recent threads on this subject were started by users new to this forum- who'd gotten fed up with GD because they spend a lot of their time there and no longer liked the endless trolling and spam in that forum.

Your other argument is that it is up to staff whether or not changes are made, and you are correct there- but staff listens to all Gaians, not just the rare well spoken GD reg who likes the current "culture" in the forum.

It's interesting that you mention "war". If GD continues to make problems in other forums whenever they feel threatened or criticized, it might actually force staff into action on the matter as then GD will in fact no longer be an ignorable problem. Perhaps it is time for GD regs to find it in themselves to tone it down a bit and compromise with the rest of the site since we all have to live with each other, like it or not, as long as we all use Gaia.

What happens in GD should stay in GD- once it does affect the other forums in a seriously negative way, Gaia will be forced to act. The main point in the OP is that she says when a feature on Gaia becomes too big a problem for the majority of users, or somehow threatens their safety and willingness to use the site, then staff has made changes. It is a fair point. Whether or not GD has finally managed to become an active problem for the rest of the site is under discussion. If GDers "attack" or troll this feedback discussion, they are simply proving the point of the OP.

If a GD reg has a reasonable argument about why the trolling and pic spam should be okay- then they ought to feel free to state their side of it without trolling. I'd be interested in seeing it.
If you got rid of GD, all of those trolls and spammers would spread everywhere. Therefor getting rid of the forum is a rather stupid idea.

No matter WHAT you do, someone will always find a way to use and abuse ANY feature. That doesn't mean gaia should stop making them.

There is really nothing that can be done to make it 'better'. All users can do it continue to report and mods continue to do what they can do with the users who are breaking the rules. You can't just automatically axe someone. They have to go through the steps and the process of properly dealing with it.

At first it might seem bad that they'd go to other forums, but think about it. Other forums don't have the whole 'don't snitch' mentality that the GD does. If they try the crap that goes on in the GD they'll get reported and dealt with.

I don't spend much time in the GD so I was unaware they had a 'don't snitch' mentality, and I see your point. But I think the mere masses that they would expand in would completely devour other forums (as if they're some kind of deadly virus... hehee).

They just want you to think that. Besides, deleting the forum is a last resort. I'm still loving the account age restriction for using that forum.

That would be an interesting take on handling the matter... not a bad one at that, methinks.

But it only works if we also start handing out an assload of permabans for minor s**t. The existing community has been dug in for years, and they have years-old mules, too. It's not going to solve the problem where it needs to be solved.

Deleting the forum really seems to be the only way to break the problem of the terrible concentration of people-- so much that reports don't make a dent.

Best case scenario, the ones who want their old GD back will form a GD guild and stay there.

Yeah, that's true. At least people can't say there aren't different ways to approach the situation.

If people want to suggest things to help the forum, that's one thing. I'm not in the market to support anything that will ultimately destroy a standing community.

Gangs are communities. They disobey rules either on a mischievous or criminal level. Mobs are communities also, and they thrive off criminal or mischievous activity as well. Is it ok to turn a blind eye to people running rampant, ignoring the rules openly? No, it's not ok.

If they're such a standing community that can't follow the rules, they should make a guild, as long as they stay within the site's TOS, they don't have to follow specific forum rules. Or maybe, just have someone make them up their own website. This way, they can keep their precious community, and we can clean up the forum known as General Discussion. Everyone wins.

I am all for age-based allowances into GD and ED. Based on account age. Perhaps if it's extreme enough of a case to need this, they could also require a certain posting amount, with no major posting violations (meaning misplaced is ok, but harassing, threatening, TOS breaking stuff that could get you banned, not ok).

This would require more work on those who wish to troll and spam things up. sure, they can just bump forever in CB, or whatever, but it would keep them from retaliating too much.

Gaia needs to stop trying to be everyone's hypothetical "friend" and be the hypothetical "parent" that it is supposed to be. Yes, you might make a few people sad, mad, or miserable. But in the end, you'll have shaped the community into what you'd prefer it to be.

Unless, Gaia (always directed at whoever is capable of making these changes), you prefer to have GD remain as such. You prefer to have your poor users reporting hundreds of times a day if not more, and prefer your mods to be overworked and overwhelmed, unable to attend to all the reports of the day, because they DO have lives and are not being paid for their time. (not saying they should be paid or want to be paid, but if they were paid, chances are more mods would be around...)

Us, as users can only do so much. We can report. Woo. Mods can remove posts, or higher up mods can eventually have users banned after so many infractions. Woo. But it takes Gaia, the actual site, to step up, take the hammer, and crack down on ALL forums, and make sure they are ALL properly following the rules, or start taking action to assist users into following the rules, one way or another. This is why we voice our thoughts. Because we cannot do much of anything. Gaia has the power and the ball is now in their court.

I get what you are saying and all, however, you are missing my point.

There are good users in that community too. Why is everyone so dead-set on things they would never want to happen to them?

You may consider it a gang and whatnot, but this is more of an infestation of cockroaches. Even if you think you hit them all, that doesn't mean that they won't come back, and return with reinforcements.

I appreciate the lecture and all, though you should go tell this to GD ^^

Edit~

Did I mention I know both sides of the coin here?
heart hm...I know I did somewhere in one of these threads. Ah, well.

Regardless, I highly doubt Gaia has not known about this, nor have they ignored it. I find it really amusing that the assumption here is that Gaia needs the push.

I have wiped out a full house infestation of roaches before. They were everywhere, you couldn't sleep at night without one crawling on you, you had to eat standing up, and quickly. You know how I got rid of them, ALL OF THEM? Boric Acid. now, what would be the equivalent to the boric acid on the roaches of the GD?

I'm not saying there are all bad people there, which is really why I am SEVERELY against just deleting the forum. If they're good, rule/guideline abiding citizens, then they would have no problems with an age-based and even post based system.

I would go tell them, but it would break the rules of the GD forum, as this is where SITE feedback is to occur. they can be redirected to my statement, if you think they should hear it.

You're saying I wouldn't want a forum, for example, site feedback, since i'm a regular here, to crack down on the users who aren't posting to the rules? They've cracked down on a lot of the rules here, adjusted a bit here and there, and cracked down more. I've seen good and plenty suggestions moved elsewhere or deleted. I wouldn't have it any other way.
