I find it strange that a lot of you don't want it centered. This is how I imagine it. Only fixed width stuff like the forum index will be centered and the background will fill the whole page. It's way better than having everything sticking to the left side. I have about 450 pixels (I actually measured it so I'm not exaggerating) of blank space on my right side right now with my screen resolution of 1440x990.

For 1024x768, centering the site will just shift it right by a maximum of 10 pixels. It won't really do much.

P.S. Sorry my edit isn't exactly centered. I suck. >_<

I think that would work out for Gaia as then they can have ads on BOTH sides of the screen as opposed to just one. And If it helps Gaia in the pocketbook then their is a good chance we could get this to be.

Though this never affected me in the first place but if it makes more people happy . . . . .

This isn't a new complaint. We've vocalized about not liking all the white space before.

But Gaia has decided to go "minimalistic." <<

I thought this was in the works? Or at least on some sort of list.

thats what i though 2
I would give the soul of my left kidney to center this site.

I wouldn't mind it being centred, but I'd also like it to be more widescreen-friendly
so I'm not left with more than half of my screen as filler.

I love it how the majority of people in this thread are totally set in their ignorant preferences all because "I have a small monitor, why would I want the layout to change when it fits perfectly now and would look exactly the same if it was centered on my machine?".

Idiocy, supreme idiocy.

Look, it's logic. Not everyone has a widescreen monitor at the present. Gaia loves to future-proof themselves. In the future, widescreen monitors will be cheaper and thus more people will buy widescreen monitors.

(Don't tell me the logic doesn't make sense, I recently upgraded from a 15.4" laptop to a 1920 X 1200 24" monitor and my productivity levels for assignments, commissions and just general work have shot through the roof in ways I thought I'd never see--other people surely know the benefits of working with a larger screen.)

So in order for Gaia to future-proof themselves, they will want to do something to the layout that makes it wider or centers it for the dozens of different screen resolutions available right now. On my monitor at the moment, this reply box takes up about half the page. The other half is white space, and the gaia-bar at the top of my screen that goes across the whole page.

I was experimenting with CSS on an assignment and found you can assign percentages to widths, so maybe Gaia should go about doing that so that things like reply boxes are decently-sized for those with better monitors. Like... 80% instead of my current 50% of screen real-estate being taken up. That way, it doesn't intrude that much on users with smaller resolutions, while it provides a big advantage to the users who are more up-to-date with things hardware-wise.

Just remember what Bill Gates said about main memory "back in the day" :
640K ought to be enough for anybody.
-Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates, 1981

edit: I don't really care about the look of the forums, since it stretches out and that's good. But things like inboxes, reply boxes and so on.. Well, let's just say I've started to develop a kink in my spine from leaning so far left because I'm a Gaia addict and it's just more convenient to always be leaning left as I'm browsing through forums and replying lol

Thank you.

Who cares if it isn't exactly centred, it actually looks good. Hell, I'm quoting you in the OP, because I don't have access to PhotoShop currently.

I wouldn't assume everyone and their dog can use Firefox. My old computer wouldn't install Firefox (possibly due to a virus I had gotten that deleted the Operating System, among other things) properly and it kind of agitated me when people assumed it was infallible. Granted these people might be a minority...

I'm actually at a workplace that won't allow me to install Firefox because it isn't Board Approved.

Sure it isn't perfect, but it's way better than IE7. I used to use IE then I switched to Firefox. I find Firefox to be way faster.
... I guess I just worry it might mess up on my really, really, really old and tiny monitor... >.> Yes, yes, I know my boxes, 600x800 monitor is out of date and it doesn't really need pandering to, but I can't afford a new one yet, either. As is, Gaia's layout stretches the page and I have to scroll over to the right to look at... Well, basically just the advertisements, but still...

I gotta go find a large, centered website and see what it looks like on my old/shitty monitor. Because I used to have a widescreen laptop and I remember how annoying the extra space could be on some websites. I wouldn't mind centered layouts at all so long as it doesn't weird out on my tiny screen...

.... .... God, I want a new monitor... But they're still damned expensive! T.T

It doesn't look that much better, imo.

Doesn't look that much better... to you. But does it look worse?

That's the real question.
