I'm afraid I don't understand. Maybe it's because my monitor isn't fancy? Mine is 17 inches, which I thought was pretty big (for a laptop, at least). Gaia looks well-spaced to me, while the image you've linked to has huge gaps of wasted grey space on either side of the small, cramped box in the middle. That's what you want it to look like? Why?

On Firefox. Hello, not everyone uses it.

Hello, not everyone has a widescreen neutral
I can't believe you actually care about something as useless as that User Image

Have you try using Ctrl + ?

you tried knowing the difference between centering and zooming?

Well, gosh, that rudeness was uncalled for.

Yes, but for what reason?

Probably for a similar reason as yours: Personal preference or whatever you want to call it.

I wasn't aware some people preferred 20cm of white space on their monitor.

Again, rude. Well, now, you are aware. And how many people really have wide-screen monitors to see this mysterious white space? "Hello, not everyone uses (them)."

Quoted for truth. I have eleven usable computers, for which nine of them aren't even widescreen! They're standard size (4:3)! That's right, only two of them have widescreen monitors.

But the sizing issue actually falls on the resolution rather than the fact that people's computers are on widescreen, as the site is set up to be 1024x768 max, which the laptop I'm on can be on at the highest.

Edit: This thread reminds me of this one, except the thread I linked seems more reasonable.

Well yeah, it is the new technology, but it is still a luxury, since I barely know anyone with a wide screen. Only a few people have them, but like I said, I am not here to argue, I am just saying it is kinda pointless, but if you make the site center, it's fine for me, I just think gaia has better things to worry about rather than centering the site 3nodding
Interesting. I can't think of a single friend who doesn't use widescreen.

Even my mum and dad use widescreen monitors .__.; But then it's not just for widescreens. It's for anyone who's screen resolution is higher than 1024x768.

I don't know that centering a site is that difficult either, but then it's been awhile since I did HTML, and that was on a far simpler page than Gaia.

no one at my school has one, nor do the school, neither does my family, it's mostly laptops.
I only know two people who own them, but they work for a company who makes websites, so yeah, just like O.P. said: not everyone uses widescreens, just like not everyone uses firefox.
Wait, there are laptops that aren't widescreen? o.O;;

*shrugs* Anyway, as I said it's not just widescreens. It's any monitor larger than 1024x768.

@OP: Something like this?. Please excuse my poor editing skills. I'm not really one for computer graphics >.<;

centering the site doesn't make less negative space, it just cuts in half

which is good from a composition point of view, but gaia is not a painting. if you want to maximise usable space, the solution would to make the forum widths a relative instead of a fixed value, to conform with any resolution that loads it

I have no idea where you live then, because not everything is widescreen User Image
and yes, I am in the US.

No insult to your Photoshop skills, Valheita, but I think the site in the example is as ugly as hell. That is wasted space. It ruins the aesthetic of the site and makes nearly all of the screen empty grey. How is that supposed to be more appealing? (Again, it's the idea that I think is bad, not you or what you made.)

*nod* I generally prefer relative width sites when designing. The problem is that it just spreads out the content, and eyes traveling horizontally on high-resolution widescreens is a bit straining. A paragraph in the forums at 1024x768 could turn out to be one sentence half a page long at 2560x1600.

There should be some kind of happy medium. Mind you I always say users should fix their own content instead of waiting for something that may never come (and there are CSS adjusters for other browsers than Firefox), but... well.

no wonder.
Yeah, there are not a lot of people using widescreens...yet.

yeah, i tend to prefer 1024x768 for web browsing simply because my eye-sight isn't the best, and why would i need more space anyway? the only time i scale to huge resolutions is when i'm doing digital painting

i like the 4:9 proportions, as well. which sucks since most new laptops come in widescreen
they also all come with glossy screens. which means i need a desktop computer with a matte flatscreen to do my art

-sighs-

That... was Paint >.<;;

I'm sure there are better ways of doing the centralising. I can see that it's not for everyone, but I'd prefer it to having my posts expand out across the entire screen. Paragraphs start looking real stupid when there's only 1 line to them D:

I suspect Mindset has the right of it though.
