ok, so i do advertising, site re-designs for a living and here's my opinion.

If your goal is to recruit NEW users this one is IT!! I think people are hesitant to join Gaia b/c they think they're weird if they do. By showing pictures of the typical user you ease the mind of those who want to join but don't want to be classified as "dorks" - especially since the people shown are cute, hip, etc.
