A lot of users are showing they haven't read the updated post. Grace has stated they are putting the bubble back before the release so we can stop bitching about that.

I'm still going to b***h about not releasing until the footer is optional though.
Are they putting all notifications back in the bubble or just the PMs? The update only said that PMs specifically were getting put back in, unless I misread. I'd like to see the trade and comment notifications back up in the header as well.

      I agree with Like OMFG.
I want my comments in the bubbles too, if the PM's are staying there.

Aside from that, I hate the idea.
I never ever notice the footer on my Facebook and only until my sister points it out do I see that I have 22 new notifications.

      I really hate this idea.

If you guys have brains, and a heart, you'd leave it alone or at least give us the option to turn it off.
I strongly agree with biohazards post, well said.

Yo man, that header is horrible talk2hand

No offence gaia but you shouuld make a puke emote for this. I honestly love the current one. The preview looks horrible. Change the color to purple if u want, but leave the map and design the same. And no footer! Those are annoying and in the way. Now every social networking site has one. Please gaia, listen to your users. Normally i'm not one to complain, but this one i had to. Please dont do this to the site neutral

Also, is there any particular reason that user feedback seems to be useless around here?? I don't see any positive reactions to this thing, and yet the staff seems willing to ignore us all and go through with it anyway.

This is not true at all. Why do you assume this?

Because users feel like their opinions must be regarded as the word of god, and all devs must bow to their will, or else you're ignoring them.

I don't even understand why people are so equally hellbent on not even TRYING the bar. Do you guys even know how SILLY you sound? You don't even know how it works and you're already pissing your pants!

If you had any remote idea of the lag it will cause for people who have not-so-decent computers and/or multiple tab browse Gaia, then you'd be 'pissing your pants' as well. :/

Seeing as it uses Ajax/CSS and not flash or a java applet, i don't see how it could possible lag. then again Gaians love to jump to conclusions.
In regards to the update, I'm going to say this again so that it is clear and I hope others do the same.

*clears throat* Ahem!....

I DO NOT WANT THE FLOATING FOOTER!! KEEP THE BUBBLES FOR ALL OF THE NOTIFICATIONS AS WELL!!

even if it doent have those things it will still lag reason: bugs glitches which never seem to get fixed quickly dont believe me ask anyone who have been in guilds for a long time. and besides what about us users who have really old computers running on dial-up because we dont get high speed where we live and our computers are so old that they cant support most of the stuff gaia needs to run. and yes if i could buy a new computer i would if you were going to suggest getting a new one. i really hate to complain honestly i do but people need to understand about us poor folk out here and that all pages no matter what take forever and a day to load and with this new footer its just one more thing i got to load up before the page is totally loaded which means another 5 to 10 minutes of loading which is why i am so upset

You shouldn't take your proof from the source code since you can't read the PHP and the mySQL queries attached to it.

And considering I've built my own computers since middle school, I should know what can and can't lag my computer. :/ The footer is floating, which has it's own coding to scroll with the page, then you have the buttons itself, which have scripting in order to work properly, then scripting the notifications and whatnot, see where I'm going?

So much scripting for a 1024x30 toolbar will cause lag, it will for sure glitch upon launch, and will more than likely eat up the bandwidth Gaia runs on more, which means more money issues. ^_^ Considering there is less than 30 positive nods to this idea in the thread, I'm pretty sure that fixing what isn't broken is considered ridiculous. You saying that our word should be regarded as the world of God is rather offending, considering this is a feedback thread and we're giving feedback. And it's been proven that half our points were overlooked, so yes, I will stand up to make sure my point is made clear.

UPDATE BELOW.

We've been working hard on a redesign of the site header. We all know Gaia to be a vibrant and lively community site, and we wanted to express this more visually in the header. As you may know, we have been using the header for Gaia events like Valentine's Day, Promageddon and so on. We want to continue doing that, and in addition, reserve the space in the header for more social and community related purposes in the future. So watch that space!

You'll see that the new redesign actually looks very minimalist. The idea was to take the more utility-type functions (e.g., notifications, PMs, Gaia IM, shortcuts) and move them to a new floating footer. Check out the new design here:

Site header redesign

A few points to note:
- Friends module is back! Yes, we heard your concerns when this was removed from the homepage. You can now see your friends and check their online status by clicking on the Friends icon in the new floating footer, like so:

- Unfortunately, after much pondering and debate, we decided to remove the world map as it was taking a big toll on the page load speed. You can still access the map through the World landing page. There is much we can do with depicting the Gaia world, and we want to work through that in a more integrated way with the site before re-introducing the world concept in a big way later.
- Announcements will still be in the speech bubble next to your avatar, and all other notifications have moved to the new floating footer.

So, what do you think? Like it? Hate it? Let us know what you're thinking!

Quick clarification: When you get a new PM or other notification while you're on the site or when you first sign in, you'll see a little bubble pop from the footer letting you know. So there'll be some notification apart from the change in the numbers on the footer icons. smile

UPDATE 6/22:

Thanks, everyone, for your valuable feedback. You've provided a lot of food for thought. The biggest concerns I seem to be hearing are:
1) You want to see your notifications, particularly PMs, up in the header as usual and not moving down to the footer.
2) You don't want a floating footer for a few reasons:
a) It is too Facebook-like and takes away from Gaia's identity.
b) You're worried about the lag.
c) You're concerned about the space it will take up at the bottom of the page and the fact that it follows you everywhere on the site.

After digesting this feedback and speaking to the various teams, here's what we will do before the first release: We will put PM notifications back in the bubble in the header.

In addition, we considered making changes to the footer based on your feedback. However, we realized that it's tough to evaluate something when you're not interacting with it and just looking at a mock (which someone pointed out is in pretty low resolution). We'd like to take a chance and release it, let it live and breathe a little bit. We'll be releasing it together with an official feedback thread with the announcement. Based on the feedback from the broader Gaia community, we will decide what to do next. There were great suggestions from you, including an option to turn it off or to hide/minimize it, etc. All of these will be considered - we'd simply like to gather more feedback post-launch when you've actually had a chance to try this.

I hope that goes a little way in alleviating some of your concerns. Thanks for all your thoughts.

I don't know how closely related this is to the shop design, but I HATE the fact that all of my options were removed from the pull down. It now takes twice as many clicks to get to the shop of my choice to go to trades and depending on the shop it's twice the clicks AND scrolling. Why couldn't you leave the pulldown alone and just add the neat frontpage for those who just clicked on shops?

If that change is anything like the coming ones I may be unhappy. I do, however, like the idea of a who is online display without having to open the hiiiighly broken GIM or click and filter through my friends page. And I won't miss that little map box one bit.
