Barbara Gordon

By now the sound of buzzing finally caused Barbara to glance at her phone. She found a text message from Jim and let out a sigh saying 'Pick me up and we can go together to the Charity thing. I won't tell dad.. Promise!!!' She was lying on her belly and pondered the idea. She texted back to him her reply and got herself off the bed picking some nice clothes from on of the boxes. By now she covered up some of the small bruises on her arm with some concealer and looked for her heels. Once she found them she grabbed her bag and keys she was still disappointed in herself at the moment.

All her hard work and effort for what? So the kid could poke fun at her? Her frown was evident as she unlocked her car door. She got inside and turned on the ignition and drove off. Her brother was already outside before she rounded the corner of the block. He hopped inside as she followed the directions there. She entered the parking lot and handed her keys to the valet only to have her phone ring then. She talked to her father and ushered Jim back into the car and excused herself for using the man's time. "Jim you owe me even if we didn't go inside." She scolded as she dropped the boy off at home. 'If I don't Mom would throw a major fit..' She thought in annoyance.

She drove back home and entered her apartment locking the door behind her and turned on the t.v. At first she was annoyed and not she was pissed off the joker clip was on repeat. if she left right now as batgirl that kid would poke fun at her again which would make her even more annoyed. Jim would have told her to go and do what she thought was right if he knew what she had done earlier.

Barbara went back into her bed room and redressed for what seemed like the fourth time that day and snuck out the window again after making sure no one saw her. Batgirl carried her cell phone in one of the pouched on her belt but made sure it was on silent as she swung off towards one of the tall buildings in Gotham. She knew she would have to check it periodically so her father wouldn’t be suspicious.

James Gordon

Gordon had just finished exchanging a glance with what seemed to be another Bat-vigilante but this one seemed female. He was about to say something when the woman had vanished. He shrugged it off and turned back to look over his shoulder towards one of the younger officers who seemed to have a semi-panicked look on his face. He was lead over to one of the news vans and remained silent as he watched it. The joker was up to his tricks again. He rolled his eyes at the image of himself and then froze recognizing who the other two were.

He moved away from the van and noticed Batman near the other and walked over. "This isn't good. This isn't good at all. I've called everyone back to the station once tonight and now I might have to do it again. Those two people are very important to Gotham City Batman. You are on your own for this one...I can try and locate where he's at but that might not be enough. You, robin and that new person might be able to handle the Joker and Harley." He said as he stepped away from him checking his phone for missed calls. James then dialed home. No one answered he figured his wife would be asleep but his son normally waited up for him. It was odd. He sighed loudly and dialed the number for Barbara now that she was back in town it was more likely Jim snuck out with her. She answered her phone trying very hard not to sound exhausted. "Barbara you and Jim should go home I don't care if you don't even take him back home... The Joker might try something fishy with that Charity ball near central hall. I don't want you two caught up in it either." He scolded not to far away from batman.

By the time Commissioner Gordon got off the phone Batman and Robin were gone and as usual no one had seen them leave. "I tell ya, I wonder what that woman was thinking, you can't just wear a cape and a pair of long underwear and expect to do the same thing as us," said Robin as he followed Batman across a rooftop. Suddenly he caught a backwards glance. "Ok, so that was exactly what I did, but at least I tracked you down first. Come to think of it where did she get her equipment from?" said Robin, "ah well, I guess I'll figure that out later, right now I'm just raring to fight the Joker." Robin froze as his partner stopped, and cringed under the weight of Dark Knights stare. Next he knew Batman was gone.

"Fine!" Robin shouted, "I don't need your help either." In frustration he kicked the air conditioning unit next to him, denting the metal and hurting his foot. "Why wouldn't he want my help?" said Robin as he leant against the large metal unit and slid down onto his butt, "I mean, we're Batman and Robin..." Feeling hurt and let down Robin turned over an idea in his head before snapping his fingers. "That's it! If I can find whoever the Joker kidnapped and rescue them then I'll still be a hero and the Joker will lose his leverage over my buddy," said Robin excitedly, before leaping off of the building.

Robin jumped onto a nearby fire escape braking his fall before he jumped into passing traffic. Landing on the roof of a van Robin wobbled, "Whoa-o-a," he called as he balanced himself. Breathing a sigh of relief he looked forward and considered his next move. "Alright, the Joker never mentioned who those important people were but if I start with his old hideouts I might just get lucky," said Robin. He walked to the edge of the van as he prepared to get another ride, but as he did the Van jerked to the side. The driver swerved into the next lane ripping the ground from beneath Robin's feet. "Huh!" he yelled as he fell forwards. He managed to catch a rope on the back of a truck as he fell but the speed of the van pulling away threw him round the side. His bones felt like they were vibrating after he was slammed into the steel supports.

Still clinging to the rope for dear life as the truck drove on Robin was once again swung into traffic. This time Robin was thrown at a car threatening a head on collision. "Arg!" Robin screamed. He weaved his legs in and brought his feet down on the road between the car and truck. He could feel the asphalt scraping away at the soles of his boots, so he wasted no time in kicking off the ground. Finally Robin swung himself onto the trucks bumper and to safety. Still grasping the rope tightly with one hand he grasped his chest with the other. His heart was racing, pounding against his ribs like a jackhammer.

Soon the truck pulled into the industrial district, it slowed according to the speed limit and Robin jumped over a low wall disappearing into the shadows. It didn't take long to find the building he was looking for because Tim Drake had been here before. Robin jumped as a sound surprised him; leaping back he took his torch out of his belt and shone it at the source. It was an old beer can but that wasn't enough to calm him down. "Creepy," said Robin, swallowing his fear and walking into the building, "Just the short version of the history here is enough to give me the shivers. This burned out husk of a building is where the Joker killed Rachel Dawes and where Two Face tried to kill Commissioner Gordon's family." Jim had confided in Tim the secret of what had really happened that night and being the fanatic Tim was he went straight there. Robin's eyes searched the place as he swept his torch light around. Being there in the middle of the night made him more then a little anxious. Crime fighter though he was, he was still onto twelve years old.

Alfred Pennyworth

It was quiet in Wayne Manor, fairly normal considering the time of night, and the number of people who actually lived within its walls. Alfred Pennyworth did his best to maintain the silence as he approached the master bedroom, an ornate tray in his hands. On the tray he had assorted different cookies and a solitary glass of cold milk, just a little well-earned something to sustain Master Wayne after a hard night's work. He was never quite sure whether his employer was in or out, but listening out for the sirens and using intelligent guesswork, while usually hit-and-miss, ensured that Alfred quite often knew where "The Batman" was. The door to the bedroom was ajar, often a telltale sign that the master had returned with the intention of actually sleeping. A hopeful smile on his face, the faithful butler walked with restraint along the sliver of white moonlight that shone onto the floor through the narrow space. Reaching the door, he turned and pushed it open using his shoulder, being careful not to drop the tray or spill the milk, and approached the bed. The hope vanished from his face upon sight, as the bedsheets were wrinkled, but Bruce Wayne had definitely not been in it. Heart now heavy with anxiety, Alfred set the tray down on the bedside table and pulled firmly on the sheets in a bid to straighten them out.

Bruce Wayne had been "The Batman" for some time now, but that didn't stop Alfred from worrying about him. Capable he may have been, invincible he certainly was not. As it had so many times before, his mind strayed then to thoughts of blood, of guns and knives and of his young charge injured beyond his own expertise. He shuddered at the images running through his mind, trying to force them to go away but they wouldn't. As he stood there, staring out of the large window, his hands clasped firmly behind his back, watching the city lights, he knew that these images would plague him all night, and into the small hours of the morning. Then Master Bruce would come home and the anxiety would lessen for a while; after he'd helped to clean and if necessary close any wounds sustained out there with the scum of the city. The day would go as normal and the entire cycle would begin again the next evening. It was exhausting. But, Alfred thought, a smirk beginning to form on his lips in a bid to comfort himself. He does make Gotham a better place.

James Gordon

Commisioner Gordon had turned back after closing his phone as he realised that the two them were gone. He let out a frusterated sigh and turned to face one of the officers coming towards him. "Okay, Jenkins give the order to the others about continueing the search for the woman named Scream and Cadaver. Be careful and stay in constant contact with the others. Cadaver is going to try her pleasent little mind games when she gets the chance. I want a team to go and search out all of the old hideouts each and every one of them.. I weant no stone un touched. Got it." James gordon said in an annoyed tone. "I don't want Joker finding anyone else to help him out.. Send a patrol to check on the important people of gotham." He ordered turning away once more.

Batgirl Barbara Gordon

Batgirl soared through the sky towards the one of the many places Joker would hide out in. She landed on the roof of an old abondoned werehouse. Crouching down in silence she pulled out a small pair of bonaculars and glanced down for a sigh of ground activity. She felt herself shudder at the thought of being back near the place she hated herself most.

It was her fault for letting Jim leave the room after letting Mom answer that front door. It was her fault they were captured that day if she only paid more attention they wouldn't have went with that officer in the first place. Batgirl shook her head tryng to clear her mind as she watched the boy wonder land on the ground below. She watched him enter the wrechted building across from her. Batgirl decied to give him some distance and then jumped down noticing that her suit still in good condition as she walked in cautiously. In her hands this time were some smoke pellets she created awhile back and this time along with a batbola. She didn't want to use deadly force unless she was forced to.

She walked in slowly nearing the heart of the building that was blown out she hid behind a beam when she noticed the boy in the center of the room. "Gordon's wife, Daughter and Son were brought here by one of his own officers you know. Two Face was only going to kill his only son, Jim because of the coin toss. That family was picked up and thought they were going to be safe... Jim still doesn't trust as quickly now does he?" She whispered coming out from her hidding place. It seemed the Joker wasn't here. She leaned against the beam as she watched him from a distance. 'This kid is going to try to take me out isn't he?' She thougth to herself as she packed the pellets away. "Joker wouldn't stick to the slums for a job like this you know.. He'd be in the heart of the city... A place all of us would search last." She said calmly noticing he was anxious. "You remind of someone.."She added as she just stood there waiting for his response or reaction. She tilted her head to the side as her hair swayed abit cause of the movement. "The Joker's smart and Harley isn't as ditsy as everyone thinks she is... I'd start heading towards the Charity Ball. Just because he has two people doesn't mean he's going to stop there. If all the important people of Gotham gathered in one place wouldn't it be easier to take them all out at once? He's probably there just waiting for the right moment to make his entrace. He has done that before."

Robin was resonably confidant that there was no sign of any human contact in sometime and he was just starting to breath easy with a voice filled the empty room.
"Gordon's wife, Daughter and Son were brought here by one of his own officers you know."
In one motion Robin turned the light on the source of the sound and drew a batarang into a ready position. As he got a look at the person he pointed the light at the floor near her so that he could see her without blinding her but at the same time he didn't drop his guard. All the same Robin hid his arms under his cape but he didn't put his weapon away.

"Joker wouldn't stick to the slums for a job like this you know.. He'd be in the heart of the city... A place all of us would search last."
"Right, then what are you doing here?" asked Robin sceptically, his going theory was that she was looking for credit and was trying to throw him off the case like a jealous cop.
"The Joker's smart and Harley isn't as ditsy as everyone thinks she is..."
At that Robin's eyes narrowed, she hadn't been on the job a night and already she was trying to tell him how to do thing. It wasn't so surprising really, everyone underestimated him because he was so young and it was starting to annoy him. He knew he'd made her uneasy when she paused and when he thought of her earlier mishap brought a smirk to his face. In spite of this she continued and despite how arrogant she sounded he listened anyway.

"No, he's not..." said Robin suddenly after Batgirl said her bit, he had a look of realisation. "Well, think about it. As you pointed out Gothem's elite have gathered in one place, but the Joker's not going to go there himself. The he is too obsessed with Batman, the other half of the coin. In his mind they are the corrupt and the incorruptible, and that's why Joker is fixated on him but he still needs some incentive," explained Robin, "Don't you see, what better way to ensure that everything goes smoothly then to see the party goes on uninterrupted. He probably has the building locked down and wired. It's practically perfect, he has hundreds of high profile people as hostages and they don't even know it."

The excitement ebbed away and Robin was faced with a difficult choice. Like a jealous child he wanted to keep the Batman family to himself, but he couldn't deny the woman was useful. They made a good team and probably needed each other more then either one would care to admit. Robin clenched his fists and sighed with frustration. "Ok, let's work together on this one," said Robin, obviously expending some effort to swallow his pride. He still had his doubts about this girl but no-one else did so he hoped his bad feelings were just jealousy and pushed them aside. "I don't suppose you can drive, can you?" he asked.

Batgirl Barbara Gordon

Batgirl just remained pleasant even though his question annoyed her. “Of course I know how to drive. I was on my way to the warehouse to pick up my bike… and other lovely equipment that might come in handy. On my way here I just pondered and came to realization when I landed on that roof.” She said pointing at the building across from them. “I followed you in because this building was supposed to be scheduled for demolition later this evening.” She added as she moved towards him. “We kind of need to hurry out of here… I can give you ride to the main event if you’d like.” Batgirl added as she looked at him. He must have been twelve or close to Jim’s age.

With that said and done she turned on her heel and walked right out of the building. She pocketed her equipment and moved back towards the old warehouse with the old faded sign that said “Fish Market – Gotham’s Finest!!” The building had been abandoned for sometime since the incident that happened next door. The owner and workers feared that Two Face would come back and take out his anger and frustrations on them. Batgirl looked behind her and moved towards the back door of the building and let herself in.

The building now entirely empty except for a few wooden crates in the distant corner, she moved towards them with a smile on her lips as she flicked what looked like a rusted hammer nail on the box. Mechanical sounds came from the box as it began to shake gently as a side of the wooden box slid out and revealed a shiny black motorcycle and a pair of helmets. One of the other boxes opened up revealing several other new tools and a nicer looking costume that was in better condition. She then picked it up and packed it away in the side bag on the bike and removed her cowl for a moment to pull back her long red hair.

Still hiding a batarang under his cape Robin watched Batgirl carefully. It was strange that his training with batman taught him to be suspicious when Batman was more willing to accept her, or maybe Batman just didn't care. Either way Robin was resigned to the fact that they needed each other and quietly slipped his batarang away while she talked. He shook his head as she turned, demolitions were carried out in the day when everyone could see what they were doing, but he attributed this to a little white lie. What choice did he have other then to rely on her? Tim was a natural detective and not a bad fighter, but when walking into a situation, (particularly one planned by the Joker) it was always better to have someone watching your back.

Determined to keep his criticisms to himself Robin followed silently as they walked right out of the building. His thoughts were processing what he knew of this girl. Turning over what she had said for clues and suddenly he realised she had already told him who she was even she hadn't realised it herself. Still deep in thought Robin caught Batgirl eyes as she glanced back. He was almost sure of it now. Ready to confront her Robin took a deep breath and walked in. He felt he was ready for anything the worst that could happen was that he'd be wrong. Then he saw that Batgirl seemed to be getting changed and tripped into an equipment cabinet. Clumsily staggering he only just managed to stop it falling over before hiding behind it. "I'll... um be over here," he said quickly. Though he wouldn't admit it he was embarrassed to be in that situation. Breathing through his embarrassment he slowly calmed down.

"Stop me if you've heard this one before. It is a dark night. A psychopath once heralded as Gothems golden boy kidnaps the police commissioner's family. Taking them and threatening them in some revenge scheme. Just before he is able to carry out his threat on the youngest there he was thrown off a building by my mentor. The truth was covered up and Batman was blamed for all of it," said Robin quietly, speaking into the room but taking great care not to look at Batgirl as she got changed, "Five. Only five people knew the truth of that my mentor and Gordon's family." Robin paused to ensure himself of his convictions. "I heard the truth from my partner," lied Robin calmly, in truth Batman hadn't mentioned it and he had found out from his friend Jim, but it seemed like a convincing story, "I'm betting that you were... that you are one of the Gordon's."

Batgirl Barbara Gordon

She had looked at him and smiled abit when she notied him come in. "As long as you don't brake anything I don't mind you looking around." She said simply as she finished adjusting her suit. She moved away slowly from her supply crates and closed them with a push of a button. She leaned on her bike somewhat impressed with his thought process. A small grin played at her lips as she listened intently to the young boy wonder. "Would it make you feel better if you knew the truth?" She asked as she stood up once more. Her hand gripping her mask as if ready to remove it. "More than five people know exactly what happened over there that night... Batman, James Gordon, Jim Gordon, Audry Gordon, Barbara Gordon, Two-Face, and Jim's Friend..." She said simply as she walked over to him. The smile fading from her lips as she leaned near the wall next to him.

She noticed that he was had been struggling since the other building not criticize her. She might be able to figure him out while he sat there. She bit the bottom of her lip when she heard his theory. "I didn't stop you.. And it is vaguely familiar... But did you know who picked them up? Who opened the door? Who tied them up and which one is plauged with the most guilt?" She asked moving away from the wall and stood infront of him. She removed her mask and looked at him. "What would you have done if it were your family? What would you have done if it were your brother... Jim is all that I really have.. Him and Dad are the only ones I trust and care about the most.. It was my fault for letting him leave my room to check who my mother was talking to..." She said looking at the ground near her feet.

"One thing you should know about me is I won't be budding into your family.. I rather fight to keep mine."

Robin stood in shock at first as the floodgates opened and Batgirl's life story came out in a torrent. After that he stood there unable to speak. The silence grew longer and longer until you could have heard a pin drop. Robin kept turning everything over in his mind, everything that was said in the last few minutes. He had really stepped on a nerve and he knew it, but could he have said something else, or done something different? Could he have handled it better? He knew what Batman would have done. He would have found evidence proved his theory and kept it to himself.

Eventually Robin sighed and bowed his head regretfully. He looked up at Batgirl carefully. He knew exactly what she was talking about. "I understand... at least a little. The guilt you feel, wondering if you could have done something more, something different," he said quietly, "since we're being honest with each other I'll tell you why I fight. My father was killed, I don't know who did it but everyday I reach towards the answer and hope that one day I'll find it." Robin let his eyes fall as the ache in his chest drew in like a needle. "I suppose it's to be expected in this city, but that's why we're here, right?" he asked, with a sad smile, "We can't let the Joker win,"

Batgirl Barbara Gordon

Batgirl listened to his story kind of feeling a small bond form between them. They might not be best friend but she had a feeling he might grow on her in the future. "We all have a personal war to fight. But I can tell you one thing.. Its always better to fight in numbers than alone.. You can have someone watch your back." She added as she began to move away from him. She put her mask back on her face as she made sure everything was loaded on to the bike and in her utility belt. "Did you need anything extra?" She asked him as she peeked into one of the side packs and pulled out a water for herself. "I don't need you to pass out because you dehydrated on me. Your partner would probably have my head." She added. She popped the water open and drank it quickly tossing the bottle near the crates where a rusted trash can sat.

Batgirl then sat herself down on her bike. She picked up one of the helmets and tossed it towards Robin. "Hop on.. We have a major party to crash since we weren't invited." She said to him as she placed her helmet on. "The sooner we get there the sooner the fun will begin.. I have a new grenade to test out. The sound it emits causes anyone who hears it to pass out. Its a high frequency emission.. so i suggest you put these on just incase you get to close.." She added as she held out a pair of small looking ear plugs. "Those also have a small radio in them so we can still be able to communicate with each other without fear of being knocked cause of the emission." She added waiting for him to get on the bike. She pressed a button on the bike to start it up then pressed another to open the garage along with close up all her supplies.

"No I'm good, if anything I could use some sleep," said Robin, "a long day followed by a long night can really take it out of you, but I'm pretty much used to it by now." Robin stretched his shoulder muscles, a little envious of Batgirl's water. He didn't need it but he felt it would have been nice. Half way through his exorcise Robin saw Batgirl throw him a helmet. He extended his arm striking the helmet with the tip of his centre finger and rolled it onto his hand using the remainder of its momentum. He drew it close to himself and waited for Batgirl to finish getting ready.

As soon as Batgirl mentioned 'new' Robin was curious and likewise the moment he heard 'grenade' he began to picture explosives and that worried him. Until now Robin had felt sure that Batgirl's heart was in the right place but he new all to well how the pain can blur the line and sometimes carry you too far. Robin was somewhat assured by what she said following but now he had a different reason to worry and it showed in his expression as he took the earphones. Having taken them with his left hand he moved that same hand behind him to the back of his utility belt. With a flick of his thumb it opened but it was empty. He dropped the plugs into it and pushed it closed. With them secure he brought his arm back round and put his helmet on.

He swung his leg over the bike taking a seat and at the same time ensuring his cape was swung to one side. Robin had no doubt that his long cape would catch the wind and trail behind them as they rode and he didn't mind that, it would only add to the theatrics that they used night by night. However, the least thing he needed was to be dragged off the bike by his cape wrapping around the wheel axel as they set off. Robin was still turning over his concerns in his mind but he had to decide how to phrase his objections or his opinion would just come off as provocative, combative. In short he would be repeating the same mistake he made when Batgirl was getting changed, but at the same time as worrying about repeating that mistake he also knew that not speaking up would be a mistake as well.
