The world was at a stand-still after the disastrous battle at Alcatraz Island. Magneto, having lost his powers due to the cure, vanished without a trace. Leaderless, the Brotherhood dissolved shortly afterward, turning into nothing more than weak gangs and rogue warriors that upheld Magneto's ideals of human destruction. The cure had been removed from the public eye. The source of the cure—the mutant, Leech—was gone; lost from the hands of inquisitive and passionate scientists under the protection of Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, which Storm had diligently kept open upon Xavier's death. As the school's new Headmistress, Storm ensured the protection, proper education and training of its students. It grew, thrived and became a safe-house for any and all mutants in the midst of what the battle hadn't destroyed: humanity's unrelenting discrimination toward the mutant race. The X-Men were the only force willing and fighting to keep this balance in check.

Against all odds, the X-Men persevered. The lower levels of the mansion continued to harbor their base of operations, its secrecy secured with the death of William Striker and through agreements set with the U.S. President. Regardless of the humans' continual discrimination, threatening acts and discontent with the mutant population, the X-Men did all in their power to protect mankind. It was during the following year that the effects of the cure began to fade.

Mutants around the globe that had received the precious cure were returning to their former states of abnormality. Some wept, some were over-joyed; the humans were outraged. Not only had mutations returned, but they were ten times more prominent and powerful. The effects of the cure had caused mutant genes to retaliate and come back stronger than ever before. The public came to call these mutants Proximates, super beings that intimidated humans to a breaking point and would need to be contained. The Mutant Registration Act resurfaced.

Violence escalated. Mobs, human and mutant alike, devoured the streets with screams and waving signs. On both sides, bold steps to remove opposing forces were made. The number of casualties sky-rocketed. Mutants were thrown into "Mutant Towns," slums and camps; murdered without cause. Things were slipping out of control. . . . Magneto was their savior.

Magneto, too, had become a Proximate, and soon after his near limitless powers surfaced, he began the construction of an army. Every Proximate willing to join his cause became a single strand in a vast web of destructive force more powerful than anyone could have predicted. For the next eight years, war raged on. The humans, and the X-Men beside them, confronted Magneto's army, but stood little to no chance. Magneto ensured the survival of the X-Men—his mutant brothers—but the humans were laid to waste. Magneto, his Proximate army and all those loyal to him, reformed the Brotherhood and gained control of the entire world. The mutants were victorious.

Humans are now a near-extinct and hunted species. There are only a handful of them left, and it is the X-Men alone who have kept them protected, but it is a never-ending struggle. To find any and all remaining humans, to hide them and to buy them time for their numbers to grow, is an incredible feat against Magneto's forces. How long the X-Men will be able to last is uncertain.

Magneto has been merciful. All Mutant Registration files have been destroyed. He does not permit mutants slaughtering one-another. Xavier's school remains untouched and successful. The X-Men have—thus far—posed no threat. He isn't blind to their efforts, however. He is more than positive the X-Men are attempting to rebuild the human race and could succeed should he not keep them in check. His followers are always on the hunt for these humans, tracking them down and killing them on sight. For the hunted, there is no mercy.

The world has become Magneto's New Genosha, with mutants securing a human-free future. What humans remain live in fear, and those fortunate enough to be in the arms of the X-Men know their security is imperfect. They know it's only a matter of time before humans become extinct.

There is no longer the need for mutants to fear the norm. They are the norm. Magneto has ensured the freedom and liberation of all mutants in his New Genosha. His only, supreme law: to never kill your own kind. Humans are the enemy. It is their extinction that is key. Not all mutants feel this way and not all mutants respect the laws, but human-less order has been acheived. Equality and freedom are theirs to be had under Magneto's dictatorship. Those most wounded by the way the world has turned are the X-Men.

Though not entirely, the X-Men have failed the human race. No more than one, maybe two, thousand humans remain across the entire globe. Their goal now is to find all the humans that remain and protect them from the Brotherhood and other mutants that seek their destruction. They've created safe houses, both above and underground, using powerful mutants and their powers to hide the humans there. Some humans have been able to blend in to the mutant community, going to extremes in order to pretend they have abilities. These methods have worked particularly well, those in charge having taken great care to make sure they do so, but are not without flaw. Humans are struggling to survive, unlike Xavier's school.

The mansion halls are over-flowing with eager students. It has been expanded on more than one occasion to fill the needs of growing attendance. Similar institutions have sprouted across the nation, but not all of them have the same ideals. Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters encourages students not to despise humanity, though there will always be those that disagree. Xavier's dream of peace between mutants and humans has faded, but is not dead. It lives on in the efforts of his students, friends and X-Men; but it may also be these people that destroy it.

Magneto's dystopian utopia continues to expand--one man, spinning the world on his finger, eliminating the human race, ever attempting to strengthen on his armies. Will the humans survive their impending extinction? Should humanity collapse, where will evolution carry us? The future is in jeopardy. Will you be there to defend it, or thrust it farther into oblivion?

It's a lot different then you may remember. There are still large parts of the city, and even the world, that are recovering from the damages of war. Buildings, streets and homes are in shambles, vacant or graffitied with "mutant pride." But the mutants have already started to rebuild. Over time, the city has converted to the needs of mutants of every kind. Nowhere will you find "humans only" signs. Businesses and companies, religious groups, television studios, schools, hotels, casinos, restaurants, police stations; everything is run by the mutant population. No longer are necessities of any kind major or under pressure due to the evolution of the species. Hundreds have replaced gasoline, cars and bikes with wings or other means of flight. Some mutants can make forests of trees grow overnight, and build homes in minutes. Then again, there are those that could destroy cities in that time, too . . . but they are never killed; only utilized by Magneto.

Magneto and the Brotherhood are in complete control. The world dictator is housed in Washington D.C., but his subordinates manage countries, states and cities across the globe. Though the supreme law is for mutants not to kill one another, the other is to report any human activity; suspected or confirmed. You can guarantee that shortly after a report is made, the human, or humans, reported will be exterminated. Human life will not be tolerated.

The world is adjusting to the evolution of life. Slowly but surely, the mutants are bringing the world back to its feet. It will be only a matter of years before the destruction, hearts, minds and remaining humans in New Genosha are fixed.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXavier's School for Gifted YOUNGSTERS:
The mansion has expanded over the years, transforming into a more fitting school for the now superior mutant population. Dormitory buildings, a larger cafeteria, more classrooms, subjects and staff; training areas, etc. have all been added. These additions have been meshed beautifully into the original structure, as to maintain its history and the memory of Charles Xavier. In no way has its luxury been diminished; only improved.

Students are welcome to stay in the campus dormitories year round, since the school also serves as a mutant refuge for those who lost families before and/or after Magneto's victory over the humans.

Also follow the Gaia Online ToS. God-modding, flaming, Bible-bashing, over-excessive profanity, cybering, etc. are not permitted. Be adults, play fair and respect those around you. Violence and romance are acceptable, but let's try to keep things PG-13, shall we?

The point of roleplaying is to post. As soon as it is your turn to post, you have one week to do so. Inform me you will not be able to, and you will receive mercy. Do no such thing, and you will receive a warning. One strike, then you're out. Please post in the IC, OOC and Pirate Pad as often as possible to prevent this calamity. Remember that this roleplay can, and will, move on without you if necessary. That is all I ask.

It's alive! When creating your character, my highest demands are a.) creativity and b.) uniqueness. I don't want any whiny, perfect, uninteractive, Mary/Gary-Sues running around this roleplay. You may create as many characters as you'd like, canons and/or originals, just don't get carried away.

Do not replicate other characters' powers, personality traits, biographies, etc. Look through the character list, and be mindful of your fellow roleplayers. Exceptions are those interested in making a canon character when an OC with a similar power has already been made. I will allow this once per power between original characters and canons.

I will not accept gender-bent canons. This isn't fair to those interested in playing the actual canon. Any similarities need to be unrecognizable.

When creating a mutant OC: Be. Cohesive. For the love of God, stick to a theme. I will challenge your reasoning if you come to me with a mutant named Splashy that can manipulate water, but--oh yeah--is totally a teleporting necromancer, too. None of that!

A problem I've encountered are users crossing the genre boundary when creating a mutant. Though the X-Men have had their share of encounters with mythical beings, Gods, angels, demons, magic, legends, etc. this is a science fiction roleplay--not high fantasy. Stay away from it! The only exceptions I will make are with canon characters; like Pixie, Wolfsbane, Nightcralwer or Azazel. That said, please be careful with the fantasy elements of your canon character. You may have magic, myth and fairy-dust tied into your biography, but that's where I'd like it to stay. Don't bring elements of your "other-world" into ours without my permission or consent.

Remember that any canons that received the mutant cure in the film, X-Men: The Last Stand, are Proximates. Their abilities have returned and have been amplified in some way. This includes—but is not limited to—Magneto (Eric) and Rogue (Marie). Off-limit canons are listed in the Pirate Pad.

Only use "real life" photographs for your characters! No anime/manga. If you're playing a canon, you may use actors from the X-Men films, find look-alikes and/or add comic book reference images/icons to your posting formats.

Creative freedom is awesome. Rest assured, you have a s**t-ton of it. While major plot points, action sequences, events, etc. will occur throughout the course of the roleplay; no character, for any reason is obligated to be an immediate part of it.

If your character isn't going to fit into a situation, for the love of God, don't put them there. It's not healthy for roleplay or character development. Your job is to contribute to the plot/roleplay. How, when and why is entirely up to you!

The only person who knows your character is you. While myself and your fellow roleplayers can help with these problems, make suggestions, we can't always solve them or be expected to. You have options! Communicate with other roleplayers, discuss, branch out, place characters elsewhere. Do what you have to, so long as it's right for the character and makes sense. The world is your oyster. Eat dat sonovabitch!

IT'S EASY. The "X-Men" section is for mutants who are on the X-Men team. The "Brotherhood" section is for the mutants who do Magneto's dirty-work, run the country, hunt down humans, etc. The "Humans" section belongs to humans of all shapes and sizes. Finally, the "Mutants" section is for mutants that are neutral in their allegiances. They could be in support of the X-Men and/or Brotherhood ideals, but are not official members of either team. This could include, but is not limited to, civilians, hired assassins, even staff and students at Xavier's school.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXWhat is a Proximate?
POWERFUL. "Proximates" are the mutants that received the first cure--the cure mentioned in X-Men: The Last Stand--lost their powers, regained them, and now have their original ability restored and enhanced. They do not get more abilities, just enhancements.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXCan I be more than one character?
YES. In this roleplay, you may be as many characters as you'd like; canons and/or originals. However, I am trusting you to only create as many as you can handle. Don't make more characters than you can juggle!

GET CRACKIN'! You can go ahead and jump right into making a profile. There's no need to fill out another application or any of that monkey-business, but speak to us about this character before getting too excited. Canon, original--it doesn't matter. We're gonna want to hear about this character and see if he/she will make a good fit. It would be nice to work out before seeing a profile.

THERE ARE NO LIMITATIONS. Again, my trust in you abounds. Don't get carried away, be reasonable, and don't make your character God. I will be reading every profile I receive, and will let you know if I feel you've crossed the line.

WELL, THAT DEPENDS. There are going to be people out there who break the law. If you're a rogue mutant, the rules may be more flexible for you, but being on a team means upholding certain standards. You wouldn't want to be a mutant-slaying X-Man unless you want the entire mutant race out to rip off your head. If you're part of the Brotherhood, you wouldn't want to do that either. You're in direct league with Magneto, and are supposed to stand as an example . . . in public, anyway.

Killing is fine, just promise to be smart about it.

YES. Just add it somewhere in your character's bio, and be sure to tell us what subject he/she teaches.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXWhat canons are available?
EVERYONE. Okay, just kidding. I will allow just about any canon in this RP, as long as they were not killed in the films, they haven't been taken by someone already, and there is a suitable reason for them to be present during this time. If they died in the movies, they're unavailable--including Scott, Jean and Xavier--but I may make a few exceptions if the role was minor enough.

We're following the films' timeline, but likely an alternate version of it. There are minor changes we've made to a few of our canons characters that do not correlate perfectly with the film-verse. Your canon may be eligible for similar adjustments, but they must be discussed. Also be mindful of what abilities this canon has and if someone has made an OC with similar powers.

THEY ARE FREE GAME. Naaaw, they won't be handed over to anyone else. Their profiles are simply removed from the profile thread, and the characters become NPC fodder for the rest of us. Players have the option of ignoring the characters like they never existed, killing, or keeping them alive/present as they please--whatever works best for the story until the character can be properly removed from it.

Unless, of course, you insist otherwise. If you don't want our grubby fingers over your character anymore, just let us know.
