Aden Smith.

Now the dark begins to rise
Save your breath, it's far from over

I don't want to change the world,
I just want to leave it colder

I will not fall, I will not fade
I will take your breath away

Aden paced in his room thinking about trusting Alex with the task at hand. "Weakling won't have the back bone will he..." He whispered puffing out more smoke from his cigarette. He pushed the stub that was left into the ash tray sighing.

"Aden..." Gregory had limped back into his son's room. "Promise me....when I die you'll treat this place with the same care and love I put into it when I founded it..." An aged sorrow was left in the eyes of the man, the light seeming to fade from there existence.

"And If I don't?" He replied arrogantly.

"Then I will have lost anything to live for...."
He whispered, just under his breath. "And I'll have lost any hope that still survived for you."

"You and your sorrow story won't convince me to swear to anything." Aden grunted turning around. "Do what you want, see if I care..."

A single tear trickled down Gregory's cheek. "Then I have no choice..." he whispered to the back of his son's head before turning around to the door to the main hospital. "Good night.....son." He whispered as he made his way out of the room.

Aden understood what his father planed, and didn't even flinch to try to stop him.

"One less pest to deal with."

And I'll survive, paranoid
I have lost the will to change
And I'm not proud, cold blooded fate
I will shut the world away

Gregory went down to the elevator and took it down to the main floor. He walked by a young girl's room, she was tied up in a straight jacket and looked to be panicked. He tapped on the glass window twice catching her attention. "Nurse." He blankly spoke, as if he was without a purpose anymore. "Give this girl some sedatives, She's seeing things." The nurse only nodded and went to do as Mr. Smith had asked. He sighed and turned glancing to the glass again one final time. "I'm sorry child...." He whispered, his hand gracing the window only a moment. "I wish I could do more for you." He sighed and walked on until he reached the front door of the hospital. Mrs. May would still be busy, thus leaving none to stop him leaving the building. He stood just outside the doors and pulled a silver pocket watch out to look at the time; 15 till.

He looked to the road and bean to make his way to it, his son's words ringing in his head "Do what you want, see if I care...", It stung him terribly. He reached the road at last and looked up to the sky "Please forgive me god..." He walked out to the roads center, pulling out the watch one last time; two minutes in counting. "I'm sorry Aden...I wish I could of done more...." He whispered tears streaming his face and pattering to the ground. He looked up to the sky again a faint smile wrapping around his lips. "Lucy....I'm coming home."

Every night at 7:22 sharp a truck plows across the dirt road in front of the hospital
.
.
.
That night the truck took out her founder.
Gregory smith would be reported dead at 9:15 PM that same night.

"Is something wrong?" she asked. Joy could tell Alex was faking his enthusiasm. Could it have something to do with the tattoo? It was only a simple identification number. Wasn't it?

As he dashed to the nearest trash can, her curiosity was replaced with panicked concern. No wonder he had seemed upset before! The poor man was sick. She kneeled on the floor beside him and asked, "Are you ok?" She reached out and touched his hair, thinking to hold it back like her parents would when she threw up, but then realized he might not appreciate the gesture and pulled back. Mrs. May appeared more concerned than surprised. Joy questioned the nurse, "Does this happen often?"

"It's nothing..." Alex coughed spitting into the can. "I'll be fine...I just had a shot or two earlier...." he sighed, almost refusing to look back up to his new co-worker....

"Alex, you know drinking isn't good given your condition!" Mrs. May scoffed. "You need to be careful, I mean w--"

"I know Jane...I know." He replied. He had nearly forgotten about Joy, though he didn't want to tell her about his condition. so many judgments were made immediately by so many people. "I'm sorry to scare you like that..." he whispered to her before another vomit session occurred. Once that had subsided he spit into the can again before continuing. "...and like that, I just have a weak stomach, it happens sometimes..." He sighed before standing again, biting his lip, hoping she would buy that as an excuse, as well as hoping that was the end of his gagging.

Natalie O' Conner

You think I'm crazy? ... User Image
You should see Mr. Squiggles.

Natalie thrashed about in the small, white, room. She had woken up here with little recolection of how she got there. Tears ran down her small face. She got up from the bed in the corner of the room and started banging on the door.
"Let me out!" She cried, "Where am I?" She slid down the surface of the door and onto the floor. That's when the memories hit her.
Her classmate, Mr. Squiggles, and blood. Oh, the blood. She screams of her classmates rang in her ears. Natalie pressed her hands to her ears, trying to block out the sound, But it didn't help.
"Mr. Squiggles ... why?" She said burying her face in her hands.
When she lifted her head out of her hands, the familiar black silhouette of Mr. Squiggles assaulted her eyes. She gave a little shriek.
"Hush child, I'm not going to hurt you." He said.
"B - but that boy ..." She replied.
"I was protecting you! You heard the things he said, he called you a freak!" Mr. Squiggles exclaimed.
"Your right ..." Natalie reluctantly admitted.
"Of course I am." He said.

"Ah," Joy sighed. She knew he had been drinking earlier; she could recognize that smell anywhere. However, that couldn't be the only reason he had thrown up like that. Also, Mrs. May said he had a condition. A weak stomach couldn't justify everything.

"Alex," she said. "Excuse me for prying, but...your condition, could it be the cause of this?"

"My condition is a weak stomach." He grunted pushing his glasses back up the bridge of his nose. He sighed looking at his wrist watch. "I'm sorry but I best be going, I have an early and long shift to work tomorrow." He whispered before walking out of the room and started on his way back to his room. He hated having to abruptly leave, but even he barley believed himself that he had more than a weak stomach.

"the poor boy..." Mrs. May whispered hand covering her mouth. "I've never seen anyone so young so stressed about anything..." She sighed before turning to Joy again. "You probably still don't know where the doctor's quarters are do you? Or, for that matter, where anything is...do you?" She smiled softly before offering "Come, I'll give you a tour."

Kate followed the woman in the pantsuit and a nurse to her new "home." She already hated this place. Too much white. She missed her mother and her pretty paintings of nature. One of her mother's favorite subjects was the maple tree behind the small apartment they shared. It looked so nice in the fall...

She glanced up at the social worker and muttered, "Will I see my mom again soon?"

"Perhaps when you are better, dear," the older woman replied, though her attempt to console the girl failed. Kate's eyes teared up and she soon began to wail as they dragged her into a white room and locked the door behind them.

Joy watched him leave, feeling slightly peeved but mostly concerned. She knew that there was something more that he wasn't telling her and she wished she could help him somehow. Helping others was the whole reason she had become a doctor in the first place. For now though, there was nothing she could do.

Attempting to put on a happy face, she nodded sheepishly to Mrs. May, "Well, today is my first day...A tour would be lovely, thank you." What a hectic day this had been...

Jane smiled and began the tour on the main floor taking her through all of the first floor patient rooms. She pointed out why people were where they were. "This floor is for those who hallucinate and have multiple personalities, " She stated as they passed the rooms of a few girls, a nurse was in one giving a sedative injection to a panicked child, the other two girls appeared to be crying. "Some of the worst are on this floor as they are easier to get to seeing as the doctor's rooms are on the two floors just below us." She smiled.

"Now on the next floor will be--"
she was cut off by the intercom rustling on.

"Uhura"

"Attention all patients and staff," a wispy low voice with a slight foreign accent crackled over the PA. "This is an important announcement. VERY. Important." Uhura cleared his throat and continued. "The owner, Mr. Smith, was hit by a truck outside the hospital this evening. He has since been pronounced dead. His son, Aden, is now in charge of the asylum. You are all to stay within the building on his orders until further notice. Carry on with your normal duties in the meantime. All questions and concerns should be filed in the complaint box outside the office and will be answered sometime in the near future. That is all."

He sighed and locked the PA room. Today was just not his day. First his doctor told him he had an STD and now he had to announce the death of his boss to the entire building. As well as endure Aden for the next few days at best.

Uhura tapped on Aden's door, "Mr. Smith, may I come in?"

"It's unlocked..." Aden grunted before lighting up a final cigarette for the night. "So the old bat finally did away with himself. Hmph, 'bout time if you ask me. " he grumbled as Uhura entered his room. he puffed away on the cigarette, the door to the balcony open. "Only thing he ever did for this place after all was make a place to imprison people. " he took a final breath inwards on the smoke before flicking the bud in Uhura's general direction. He was in a rather good mood and didn't feel a need at the moment to beat on him, he just kicked back on his bed enjoying the scent of fresh smoke and the rejoice of his father's departure. "At last I can have my way." he whispered the smoke trailing out of his mouth in a faint gray line.

"And about you're leaving today." He sat up remembering that his assistant had a little appointment. "How did that go over?" He held back a snicker of thinking about what reaction there might of been to Uhura's number (0000) and where in particular it was, none the less it's size. "What the hell do you got anyway?"

"Uhura"

Uhura blinked as some of the burned end scattered into his face. His eyes watering, he nodded as Aden muttered to himself. The assistant felt a small surge of rage as he treated his father's death indifferently. With happiness even! Black-hearted devil, he thought to himself.

At the question of his appointment, Uhura's face reddened. He couldn't tell Aden the truth; he'd just use it against him later. "Uneventful, as always." His number burned at his side, stretching from the middle of his waist to above his knee. "A simple checkup, that's all."

Jane gasped as Uhura spoke. "Oh, my...." She whispered. She removed her nurses cap as many others did in the hall once the announcement had ended, a moment of silence for the man that cared deeply about the people here, not just the employees, but the patients as well. She didn't even begin to ponder the dis allowing of people to leave the hospital. "Perhaps I should just show you to your room, and we both call it a night?" She whispered, her normally happy voice now drowned by sorrow. She turned before placing the nurses cap back on, pulling her pigtails out she covered the tattoo on the back of her neck, 2020

Following the nurse's example, Joy bowed her head for a moment of silence in honor of this hospital's founder. She had only met the man once, but she felt a tremendous amount of sorrow for the loss. He must have been a good man if so many people were mourning him. She preceded Mrs. May to her room, pondering his death. And inexplicably, she lost all control of herself. She began to sob uncontrollably, like the girl on the delusional floor.

"I'm sorry...I'm sorry..." she said repeatedly to Mrs. May through gasps. "I shouldn't..."
