[Nightworld]
The Nightworld isn't exactly a world, it is more of a culture. An underground culture made up of the oddest of people, if you could even call them that. The Nightworld is vicious, cruel, unforgiving, but enjoyable, and full of ecstasy.
[Creatures]
Vampires: Creatures of legends and myths, they appear to be nothing more than humans. Unusually fit humans in this age of obesity, but humans nonetheless. A vampire doesn't flinch in sunlight, but their night vision is better than their day vision. There is no turning into bats, or mist, or other such nonsense, and garlic does nothing to them unless they happen to dislike Italian food. Crosses are no problem either, and they don't carry out their soil or whatever else people may speculate. They can sleep in coffins, if only because they choose too. A vampire has other powers besides being rather strong and immortal. Telepathy runs in their blood, stronger in others and weaker in others. Telepathy either comes in the form of talking mentally, hearing mentally or using telepathy as weapon. Never all three.
Wood, however, is the one thing the legends got right (along with a vampire's need to drink blood). A vampire can be harmed by other means, like metal, fire, acid... but none of those means leave a mark for more than an hour tops. A vampire heals at an incredible rate, unless cut by wood. Then they heal as a normal human would. This comes with a price, the reason that they heal so fast, and are immortally young is because of their blood. However, vampire blood destroys the hemoglobin in the bloodstream, so they need to feed once a day (or more depending in their mood). The feeling of 'thirst' is not thirst at all, but aphyxiation.
Werewolfs: Wolfman, come see the wolfman. A man who turns into a wolf at the full moon, is what many people believe. On the contrary, a werewolf turns whenever they want, and aren't hulking beastly men like the old movies portray them as. They are human, and then they are wolf; there is a between-form, but nothing so grotesque as one might think. Werewolfs aren't the smartest in the bunch, but are insanely loyal and instintually good fighters.
Wolfsbane, a plant grown only on high peaks in the mountains is the weakness of this Nightworlder. When fed to the 'wolf, or inhaled, it poisons them. And only a skilled herbwoman can save them. A werewolf can feed in human form, but when it feeds as a 'wolf it has to eat the internal organs of an animal. That is how hunters have marked a kill as a werewolf's.
Witches: A witch is a witch is a which? Witches, the name is not gender specific (there are male witches as well) are the herbwoman and men often read about. They don't all have warts, though it is possible, and they don't fly on broomsticks or wear ridiculous hats. They are skilled in all the ways of healing and poisoning through herbs such as wolfsbane, foxglove, and other such plants. This information is usually passed down through each family line, and each family line has a unique signature plant or magic. Magic, of course they have magic. They cannot hex or curse someone as one might think, but are adept at killing people.
A witch's main offense is the 'orange fire', a sphere about the size of a baseball (to the size of a basketball) forms between her/his cupped palms. It is then thrown and explodes into either flames, or lava or whatever else they feel like. Not the most effective weapon, but certainly destructive when it hits. A lot of the witch's magics aren't so visible, however. They can encourage plants to grow, have an affinity with animals, learn healing magic, create wards... the list is endless. A witch's weakness, besides being mortal is iron. The iron will poison his/her blood until she dies an agonizingly slow death.
And the first vampire was a witch.
Shapeshifters: A cousin to the werewolf, but descended from dragons. A shapeshifter is born with an animal, and can change shapes at will. Anything from a bird such as a hawk, to a jaguar, to a beetle. Very similar to their werewolf cousins they can have a between-form, and are good instinctual fighters. They mainly are humans, and only animals in a fight or stealth situation. Gold is their poison.
[Dayworld]
The city of Kaffeyville isn't very large, but it isn't very small. A midsized city, with its share of problems. Urban sprawl, crime, domestic violence, a handful of outskirt gangs... and vampires. Oh yes, the vampires, werewolfs, witches, shapeshifters and vigilantes. The vigilante Hunters are almost as bad as the demonic denizens themselves, armed to the teeth with arcane weapons and attitudes they hole themselves up in Kaffeyville just for a chance to bag themselves a vampire. And it is much harder to bring a corpse to justice than a person.
The downtown of Kaffeyville is like a giant grid, with many allies and small independent shops. There is a city hall, some apartments, a firestation, the normal things. And then... then there are the clubs. Many of which are frequented by Nightworlders as well as Dayworlders.
[Creatures]
Humans: Uh. No need to explain, do we?
Old Souls: Humans who have been reincarnated several times, and remember their past lives to a certain extent.
Witches: (See above)
Hunters: Hunters hunt the Nightworlders, usually for the reason of revenge. Often vigilante humans with something to prove. Sometimes witches or other Nightpeople.
