For one of Kyuuketsuki Castle's undead occupants, the evening so far had been utterly and completely boring. Dmitri was lying on a chaise lounge in the castle's large library, passing the time by reading a leather-bound book by candlelight. He much preferred the warm glow of the flame over the stark, harsh light of modern lightbulbs. It wasn't like he couldn't see well by candlelight, oh no. He could see by the light of a single flame as brightly as if it were the middle of the day. The book he was reading was ancient, the text hand-written by a long dead scribe in a long forgotten dialect of his native tongue - Russian. It was a history book, one describing a period in time that Dmitri had missed, thanks to human meddeling. He was distracted from his book, however, by the behavior of his companion. Dmitri kept several cats in the castle and one of them, a grey striped female he called Smoke, was sitting in the window, staring intently out at the castle grounds. Dmitri stood and made his way to the window, scratching the cat behind the ears. "What are you looking at, my dear?" he asked her, looking down at the cat before peering out the window himself. Oh, now what was this?
By the light of the full moon, Dmitri could just barely make out a small humanoid figure huddled by the gate that guarded the path to the castle. Whoever it was, it certainly wasn't a vampire....therefore, it must have been a mortal. As he watched, yet another figure appeared, also seemingly mortal. That was something intriguing and worrying all at the same time. Humans were food, yes, but Dmitri knew from experience that they could be dangerous if they got a little knowledge into them. He turned away from the window and made his way outside to investigate, Smoke following at his heels. The cat's eyes glowed softly in the night, twin yellow lanterns reflecting the moonlight. As he neared the two figures, Dmitri heard a pair of heartbeats - definitely mortal, but what were thye doing here? A quick peek into the one of the mortal's minds revealed his reason. Apparently, they had been dared. Dmitri chuckled low in his throat and lifted a hand, easily pushing open the heavy iron gate. He came to a standstill at the smaller human's side and pretended to be jsut a curious passer-by. "Excuse me?" he asked the young men - boys, really. They hardly looked old enough to be out of school. "Can I help you?"
Smoke mewled softly as she wound around the vampire's ankles, watching the humans with eerie yellow eyes. She was jsut as curious as Dmitri was about what the two humans were doing there.
