life is filled with hurt
When happiness doesn't work
Trust me and take my hand
When the lights go out you will understand
Skyler looked across the everlasting wastes. She had never known anything other than this life. She stood in the morning sun looking for something to hunt at this hour. It wasn’t often you even found animals around here. She still had enough to last her for a week or so but she wasn’t one for letting her supplies run low. She also needed to find her way back to the uncontaminated river. She stretched and sighed. It had been a while since she ran into any people. Maybe she finally found a place to stay for a while.
She packed up her blanket in her back pack and took a drink of her water. She looked down into the valley there was a ware house. Older than most, probably not worth the time it would take to rummage through. She didn’t have anything better to do and it was quiet so might as well go before she is discovered. She stretched once more and holstered her thigh gun. It was a small pistol, it shot homemade rounds deadly and quiet. She used it more often than her big gun. Her big gun was strapped to her back. It had antitank rounds in it, it was rather heavy. She has been known when she needs to move to abandon it and come back for it.
She made her way down the rubble, all of it trash. She made her way to the warehouse. She pulled out her gun and peeked around the wall. It didn’t appear anyone was here. She put down her back pack and big gun. She covered it with an old blanket and stepped inside. She looked around all the pillars, no one appeared to be here. She put her gun back on her thigh and almost stepped into a giant pit. She gasped as her foot slipped in and she grabbed a hold of a pile. She managed to stop her descent into the hole. She pulled herself back up and stared down into the darkness.
She really hated the underground, Something about being away from the sun that gave you light to see and havign to rely and man made structures to keep it from collapse. it may have been safer from creatures… But it made her feel like she was buried alive. She shuddered and dusted her clothes off.
“That was close.” She breathed and then began to look through the piles.
- Nothing but junk, most of it, some of the destroyed piles held treasures for sure. She began digging in them looking for something of value. Not much just some metal that she could make some more bullets. She took them all over to her back pack and then froze. Sounds were coming from the other side of the building. She took out her mask and put it on, it was quite common for creatures to emit toxins. She took her big gun and strapped it to her back. That sound again… She dipped down behind the pillar as it came into view. Android… Son of a b***h. Of all the creatures, of all the days for her to be low on big bullets. She took the big gun off her back. She would have to hope and kill it in one shot. It was all she really had. She looked at the hole… Could she just maybe this once go down there? She shook her head. It was only one android.
She took aim before it could lock on to her heat signature but it was too late. It was looking right at her. It had seen her. She gasped fearing her mistake might be a fatal one. Skyler took the shot. It blew the androids arm off. And it was very, very loud, no doubt it would be calling the swarm. Definitely not good enough. She dropped the gun and ran for her supplies. It was too fast, it blocked her path and began shooting. Skyler dodged behind a pile of rubble. She really needed those supplies.
She managed to throw off the android just long enough to get around it. She grabbed her pack while it was searching for her. She tossed the metal she gathered, she could always come back for it. Right now was not the time to have a heavy pack. She tried to sneak towards the hole. It was her best shot, if only she had blasted its head off. She hid behind a pile of metal and heard bullets riddling the side, one managed to blast through and went through her shoulder. She bit her lip, she couldn’t scream, it would alert the android.
She managed to get up and watched the android, making sure she could see when it was coming. She couldn’t afford to make another big slip up. She took off her mask she felt like she couldn’t breathe already. She tied it to her pack never taking her eyes off the broken bot. She had forgotten where the hole was again, she tripped and fell down the steep incline. When she finally came to a stop from rolling she was unconscious. What a bad day.

Skittering could be heard echoing down the dilapidated corridor. Although they were purely mechanical, down here they seemed to spring to life. Perhaps this is because their mortal counterparts are often found in locations such as this, or perhaps it’s the fact that these machines have been their owner’s only real companions for some time now.
The skittering grew louder until a clockwork rat finally rounded the corner, as it made its way to its master. “Looks like we might be left holding the bag again, old chum,” said its master. One by one, the rest of the rats made their way back. The man did a quick inventory of his crew. “Serge…” he mumbled, “always running off…”
After another minute or two of silence, a squeaking could be heard in the distance. A smile crept across the man’s face. The last rat finally came into view. The lopsided gear in the back of this particular rat gave it an interesting gait that resembled marching and also a discernible squeak. These two factors led to his master giving him the awful name ‘Sergeant Squeak,’ or more often just ‘Serge.’
The defective automaton dragged in a pack of dry rations in its jaws, dropping it in front of his master. Instead of joining the other rats, it turned back the way it came, stopping at the corner to wait for the man. “Found quite a pay load, did you Serge?” he mused to himself as he began to follow.
After a handful of complicated twists and turns down various corridors, they came to a supply room with a large hole in the ceiling, which filled the room with light. After the man’s eyes adjusted to the brightness, he saw Serge’s ‘payload.’ A young woman lay unconscious on the floor, bleeding from the shoulder. “By Jove! This dames been clipped! Don’t you worry, I’ll have you fixed up and everything will be all berries!”
The man quickly sprang into action, pulling the emitter handle off of his pack. After swiftly flicking a couple leavers and turning a few nobs, he pointed the business end of the emitter towards the girl’s injury and flipped the switch. A pulse of yellow energy emanated from his pack, as a bullet emerged from the open wound, and within a few more seconds the wound was completely healed over as if she had never been shot.

Skyler was dreaming, she had to be, this place, it’s no longer there. She pictured her old home, the way the light came in through the roof. Her friends sleeping in their nap sacks, she looked at them not wanted to forget the way their faces looked. Even if it was only for a little while, she sighed peacefully for the moment. But before she could wake them it was there, that sound. The sound of the explosion, the explosion that ruined her life. She watched the shock waves blow away her friends pieces scattered here and there.. Suddenly none of them had faces… What did they look like?! She couldn’t remember the faceless men came in and put a bullet between her eyes…But that would be too kind to be the truth.
She jolted awake, where was she what happened? She rubbed her head, it was pounding, she noticed the hole in the ceiling, right.. She fell, and wasn’t she shot? Skyler turned to face this odd looking stranger. Had he come for a fight? No… If he did he wouldn’t have waiting for her to wake up. She noticed the odd object in his hands. Was it a gun? Not like anything she had seen before.
“Well, well, well, what do we have here? You have a name?” she sneered.
Her head was pounding and from what she could tell he was pointing a gun at her. Not the best way to wake up from a fall. She shifted attempting to stand, she was bruised but nothing was broken. She noticed the mechanical rats gathered around his feet. She made a face that could be compared to surprise with a hint of disgust, certainly it was better than the real thing, but if you could make anything why that. She managed to stand and dust herself off. She looked up at the steep incline separating her from the above ground world.
“Is there a place nearby that I can get above ground? I left something important up there.” She wasn’t really sure if she was going to have to use force to either get him to leave so she could climb, or if she would need him to be a guide out of here.

“Ah.. she’s one of ‘those’ kind of people,” thought the man as his hospitality went unappreciated. This girl was not the first to eat up a day’s worth of aether without even so much as a ‘thank you.’ Still though, part of him was just happy to have some company, rude though she may be.
“Ah, you’re awake! Pardon my manners, miss, the names Tartious Moley. And to whom do I owe the pleasure?”
Tartious said as he did a slight bow while returned the handle to the pack.
“Oh, and as far as getting back to the surface is concerned, I can get you there, but we’ll have to go the long way around since the main corridor is filled in. Don’t you worry though, My navigational prowess could get us there in two shakes of tail feather. If you’re ready, let’s get a wiggle on!”

She watched him put away his gun and introduce himself. What an odd last name, Moley, like the colony? She didn’t let her thoughts get away from her, she straightened up and put her hands to her sides.
“You may address me as Lieutenant Skyler.” She looked back to the rat automotons.
“I understand the need to blend in with the environment but isn’t this taking it a bit too far?” She stepped over them trying not to step on the creatures.
He grabbed her attention again with his strange speech patterns, she had heard rumors the colony dwellers spoke funny. Perhaps he was form the colony, it could be a good opportunity to trade… if she had anything worth trading… She almost groaned thinking about all those parts she had to abandon because of the stupid android. Not to mention being stuck underground. He said they would have to take the long way she tried not to look irritated.
“Are there at least holes like this one along the way? I am not much of an underground fan.” She touched her shoulder and realized there was a hole in her suit.
She had been shot… she thought so. But how? She tried not to think about what it was he could have been doing while she was unconscious. She followed him down the tunnel looking back at the hole she had fallen down. She prayed to whatever god was listening that that would not be the last time she saw the sun.

Tartious choked back the laugh that was trying to creep out, while he maintained his best poker face. Was she serious? He looked down at his mechanical friend and said in the most nonpatronizing voice he could muster, "Hear that Serge? You better get your troops in line; we've got a commissioned officer in our midst!"
Trying to look as pleasant and serious as he could, he continued, "pleasure to meet you lieutenant! I've got a souvenir for you." The man handed his guest a spent bullet that had punctured her flesh not more than a few minutes ago."Seems as though a charlie clipped ya. Never fear though, ol' Tartious got you patched up. Consider yourself lucky you didn't suffer any injuries from falling through that hole! You know, you've got to be careful around holes like that."
"A bit too far? Not in the slightest! Down here while I'm scavenging these little fellas almost look like the real McCoy. They're pretty good at alerting me to the presence of others. Why the Serge is the one who found you passed out and bleeding. They're almost out of juice for today though, so I can put'em for the night if you'd please." Tartious issued a few commands by making a clicking noise with his mouth. The rats climbed up his blue jumpsuit and wrapped their tails around his belt before powering down and hanging lifelessly. He was pretty certain it was safe since they hadn't encountered anything on the way down here. Even clockwork rats need to rest sometimes.
Tartious shook his head, "Sorry, this is the last one we'll see for about an hour. But don't worry about that! Why don't you tell me about yourself to take your mind off it! I've been beating my gums since you woke up. What do you do, where are you from?" He smiled trying to ease the tension as they descended into the ruins. She seemed to be quite a pill! Then again, it can be hard to remain pleasant in times like this.

Let me go, I want to break free
And fight my way out of this hole
One last hope
To rise and break away
- Daurian perched atop of a pile of debris from before the aether wars. The twisted metal and crumbled stones marked a place where a dead civilization once thrived. She'd heard of it in her classes, but the surface held no memories of grass, flowers, or forests. In fact, she couldn't think of anyone in the colonies that had ever really seen such things outside of pictures. She traced the lip of the iron beam with her gloved hand as she watched the scrubby plant life bow under the wind. It was getting late, she'd have to head back soon. "Great, back to the tunnels," she thought.
When she was young the tunnels had been a safe place when she would venture up to the Waste, but now it was becoming too close, too confined, too...familiar. People still hadn't stopped asking after her family since Eliza had died. Out here, nobody knew her family, and if they did she doubted that they would be asking after her mother. "Oh Daurian, how is your mother dear? Daurian, I hate to be the one to say something, but you need to move on eventually dear. Why don't you take off that sash?" she said aloud imitating different colony dwellers as she went. There was only one way that she was going to take off Eliza's sash. When Nicholi, or Zander, or whatever he called himself now, when she was sure he was dead. Then she would take off her sister's sash. Not before then.
She looked down again. At some point during her outburst she'd stood up. Being visible, especially in a high place like this, was never a good plan. Daurian was familiar with the areas in the Waste that lead back to the safety of the tunnels. That also meant that she was familiar with the dangers that lurked in the area. That included the android that patrolled the surrounding area. She'd had to wait for hours before when it had gone into the shack that hid a hole that could be used to into the colony tunnels. It was a seldom traveled system, but she'd seen traces of others passing through before. Still, it was an entrance, but not an exit unless you tied off a rope. She hunched back down and scanned the area. The android was in the area, but she was pretty sure it hadn't seen her. Still, this was no time to be taking chances. She quickly shinnied down the rubble heap and out of view.
"Just a hop, skip, and a tumble, and I'll be safe," she thought bounding to the small lean-to she'd made of rocks. They absorbed a lot of heat, she'd used them countless times to hide her heat signature, but gave her a clear line of sight to the building that covered the entrance she'd use once the android cleared out.
It wasn't long after the android entered that she watched an unfamiliar woman walk in. She resisted the urge to call out to her. There was no knowing if the woman in the jumpsuit was safe to approach. Instead she waited and she listened. She heard one insanely loud gunshot, and the subsequent fire of the android before everything fell silent. She could hear the android knocking around for a few minutes before it exited the building. It was missing an arm. “How did that happen?” she wondered watching its retreating form. It was met by more androids than she'd ever seen in her life. The mob circled the area for what felt like hours before finally disappearing into the Waste. The sun was beginning to set. She'd worried that the rocks would cool off too much and betray her, but her luck had held out. Daurian waited for another five minutes before bolting into the building.
She did a quick check of the building before deciding that the woman, whoever she was, had escaped somehow. That could only mean that she had gone down the hole. She bit her lip. Should she go down there? Or should she give the woman time to get lost so she could get home with less risk? She rested her hand on the hilt of her sword. If the woman was dangerous it could come to a fight. Better to give her a bit longer. In the meantime, she'd check to see if the woman's supplies had anything of interest.
The stranger must have taken most of her things with her because all that Daurian found was a blanket and a gun almost as big as she was. It obviously been one of the things that the android had moved around in its frenzy before it left. When she picked it up something fell off the end of it and something snapped off in her hand. She had no idea what it was, and she didn't care. It looked important, but for all she knew it could have have been decorative. She quickly put the pieces and the gun back on the blanket and wrapped it up before scavenging for other parts that could have gone to the gun. She found what could have been three pieces in the area. “Yeesh, hope to Moley that it's fixable,” she muttered. She added those to the blanket and hid the gun in a levy of rocks that she had used to store things when she was younger. The looked over the building one more time, and with a glance back at the blood slid down the hole. As she neared the bottom she threw herself into a clumsy tumble. No sense in looking capable when the woman that had survived was no where to be seen. As she pulled herself up she looked down the tunnel and caught sight of two figures. Now she'd wait while she brushed herself off and see if they had noticed her.

Zander leaned back on his hammock, it was warm out today. He sighed wondering what kind of mischief he could get into today. The wastes weren’t as fun as the moley colonies, always having food run around laughing and playing, making them all the more tender. He licked his lips and got up looking into his pack for food. He had some human jerky left over from the last colonist he caught outside the city. He laughed and looked at the skull he kept.
He picked it up and gave it a pathetic voice. “Oh please, please don’t kill me~ I’ll give you anything you want just please!” He laughed and threw the skull back on his small shelf. He had managed to keep the remains of several of his dinners. Mostly because he was messy and if anyone did happen across his home it was pretty good deterrent for thieves. He had a pretty good set up where he was, Androids didn’t like coming over here, mostly just monsters, they either avoided him or they would provide entertainment for the day.
He chuckled to himself looking at an arm he left the tendons on. He gave it a feminine voice. “Oh myah look at the noon sun, it will get dreadfully hot in here, I hope I don’t melt.” He snapped the fingers off and then boredly threw the arm to the side, he should clean this place out. He rolled his eyes and then walked outside. He stretched in the sun and he pried his machetes out of the metal he had been using for target practice.
Zander looked out at the expanses of the wastes. It was time to hunt, it had been about a week since anyone was unfortunate enough to cross his path. He put a cigarette in between his lips and lit a match. Although hard to come by they were always worth the level headedness that came with smoking them. He would need his wit about him if he was going to have to go hunting in the colonies. They did tell him if he ever returned they wouldn’t be as kind as they were when he left. He had left a few sore people behind, most of them wishing to see him strung up in the town square.
He smiled having a shiver run down his spine, his own death was one of his favorite. He always found the thought of his death to be more than enough to get him off. He took a deep drag and began walking down the endless piles of trash. He made his way to one of the moley holes. Honestly they were just like rats, vermin that didn’t even deserve such a hunter as he was.
Zander sat down just outside the hole and reached into his bag, he was going to bait the hole, he had caught many a people this way, mostly them just not seeing in and stepping into an old bear trap he found, it made the meat just tender enough. Most people would be in so much pain they wouldn’t be able to tear it out of their skin. He loved the bear trap. Plus they were never very quiet about it, he would find them easily help them back to his home and then unmercifully butcher them alive.
He set the trap on the beaten path covered it with a few rags to make sure they didn’t see it. He licked his lips wondering when his dinner would arrive. He jumped and accidentally set off the trap just barely missing his own fingers. Someone had shot off a rather loud gun, must be an android. He set his trap and decided to check some of his other traps for the day.

- She glared trying to maintain her military composure. He was clearly mocking her and she would not stand for it. She remained silent as his jaws continued to flap their nonsense. How dare he speak to her in such a manner. He handed her the bullet, she looked surprised for a moment at the bullet, how could that be that she was shot and had no injury. She examined the bullet, she didn’t remember it hitting anything, she thought for sure it was a through and through. But it wasn’t like she had a lot of time to examine it.
She watched as he put his rats around his belt like some demented accessory, she wrinkled her nose in disgust, why would anyone want something that spreads disease to be their automaton of choice was beyond her, a bird would be much more helpful. Or a dog, basically anything but a rat, she had seen one too many of the mutated little monsters to ever think anything of them.
He mentioned that there were in fact no other holes to the surface. No light, how terrible. She would have to deal with this buffoon the whole way, certainly not. She would rather get directions, or perhaps a bit of correction could be made to make him be silent and get this whole ordeal over just a little bit faster, it’s not like this man was about to be more than a guide. She has been alone for years, it wouldn’t be the first time she simply beat the information out of someone and left them there.
She put down her foot stopping both of them, she put her hands on her hips having had enough of his nonsense.“Looks like I’ve got a comedian on my hands here.” She glared. She got close to his face not dealing with anymore of his bullshit happy go lucky attitude.
“Quite an arm you've got there! I bet you jack off all day!” She grabbed his arm roughly, then covered her nose. “I didn't know piles of s**t came in blue jumpsuits!" She shouted at him. Her face suddenly becoming calm then never moving her hand she flipped him on to his stomach and stood on his shoulder still gripping his wrist. She bent it in an awkward angle and then scowled at him.
- “Now listen here maggot! You will treat me with the utmost respect! I did not spend my entire life surviving the hardships of the waste to be mocked by a** grabbing c**k suckers like you.” She pulled on his arm not very hard, but enough to hurt. She then let go and stepped off him.
“It is because of your care of me in my unconscious state that you are allowed to keep that arm. So I suggest you get your a** up and lead me out of this god forsaken hole. And don’t expect to hear any sob stories out of me where we suddenly become buddies. So shut your trap and lead.” She sneered and tried to contain her temper.
"I have business to deal with an automaton up top, he took something of mine and I need it back, lets…” She froze and quickly drew her gun something else fell down that hole. They had been seen for sure, though the person looked young, she didn’t look like a waste dweller. She walked back up to her never lowering her weapon, this girl might have been following her.
She came to the edge of the light. “Freeze! What did you see? How did you escape the automoton?” She growled and took in her appearance. She had the gun pointed between the girl’s pretty little eyes. At this distance even her little low powered gun could kill her. However she was just a child, she might want to tone back her insults or at least minimize her swearing. She didn’t look like a child of the wastes, so how did she or why did she come from there? She glared waiting for an answer.

To rise and break away
Oh she'd been seen alright. She could hear the footsteps starting back up the tunnel as her eyes adjusted to the gloom that she'd grown up in. Whatever she'd been expecting an uptight cold-eyed woman with a gun was not it.
“Freeze! What did you see? How did you escape the automoton?”
Daurian fought the urge to rest a hand on her sword. She had an act to follow through with. She quickly raised her hands in the air near her head. She would need more persuasion than that to raise her hands any higher than was strictly necessary to show that she wasn't a threat.
She looked passed the woman and saw a man that she recognized coming closer. Well, she didn't so much recognize him as the automaton rats that swung from his hips. She'd seen him around the colony from time to time, but they had never been close. He looked dirty compared to the last time she'd seen him. "Wonder if he'll recognize me this time. They never do..."
She realized that she hadn't answered yet. No sense in making this "nice" lady wait any longer.
Daurian shifted her wide eyed gaze back to the stranger.
See? I saw a huge pile of rubble and pluck outside of the shanty that covers this entrance to the colonies and went to scope a feel. It didn't have anything neat, but you know how that goes... You look like a Wastelander." She paused taking in the woman's stance. She definitely looked tense, but was it just from her unexpected appearance, or was there more to it? Daurian feigned a look of alarm.
"There was an automaton out there? Like, a rogue automaton?! Heaven to Moley I'd best count my blessed phosphorus that it wasn't still hanging around when I came through," she blurted as quickly as she could manage. She made sure to use the affected speech that many of the other colonists she'd grown up around used. Her father would never approve of her talking like this, but if this Wasterlander had any similar thoughts about the colony's dialects she hoped they made her sound dumber.

Quite a timely entrance by this young lady! Anything to pull the anger away from this mad bearcat. What crawled up her britches anyway? He should’ve just let her get her comeuppance! Had she not been a woman, he had half a mind to rip out of her hold and show her what his big arm was really for. Applesauce! It sure is hard maintaining a proper gentleman’s demeanor. How can people live their lives being this ornery?
Speaking of gentleman, he had nearly forgotten about their guest. Goodness, hopefully this hysterical dame doesn’t scare her off! She sure looks like a girl that used to attend the mechanical workshop he used to host back in the colony, but.. something was off.. no, the voice is wrong. She talks like a common dig level colonist. They never had the aptitude for the tutoring he provided. The resemblance was uncanny, and Tartious had always been good with names, just as Edmund had taught him to be, but it had been too long to be certain. Gohr Amit! What was here name?!
This interrogation business was just going to have to wait; this was driving him crazy.
“Pardon me, miss, but do you have a sister or a cousin by the name of Collier? Ah, but where are my manners. I am Tartious Moley. You must excuse my ill-mannered acquaintance here, the dark leaves her feeling rather disconcerted,” he said after ensuring he was a few good steps away from his ‘friend.’ “How has life in the colony been? I should really pay a visit again soon. It feels as though it’s been ages! You look rather solicitous. It’s not the gun, is it? What has you uneasy?”

She thought about shooting her so they could get a move on and not have to deal with this stupid little girl. She had that awful moley accent, God how she despised the colonists, worthless the whole lot. But this imbecile guide of hers decided to jump in yet again. You would think he would learn.
She nearly growled as it appeared he might know this girl. God… colonists were pathetic. She hated being underground, so much community, she hated the very idea of others relying on her, or her having to rely on someone else. She was quiet for a moment as the old wound felt the need to be painful, her legs suddenly ached with the memory. She holstered her gun and rubbed them trying to soothe the pain away.
“Look ladies, we don’t have time for this s**t, for all I know someone has already pilfered my guns. Not to mention that s**t stacked automaton probably has already called its little clan for repairs, and if it was paying any attention it knows I fell down this hole. I would rather not be here when they figure that out. Let’s move out s**t stains.” She grumbled and began marching into the darkness, she paused only to look back and make sure they were following.
Somebody get me through this nightmare
I CAN'T CONTROL MYSELF
So what if you can see the darkest side of me.
No one will ever change the animal I have become.

Let me go, I want to break free
And fight my way out of this hole
One last hope
To rise and break away
Daurian was less than thrilled when she realized who was traveling with the unpleasant woman. It was Moley's son. She couldn't place his first name, but she recognized him from around the colony. When he asked after her family she had no doubt that it was the same person that her sister had spent some time studying under. "Tartious." She made a mental note. On one hand it could help her for him to know who she was, but being caught lying certainly wouldn't earn her any favour from jumpsuit gun woman. She hesitated. Maybe he'd catch on to her ploy when he got her name. If she was going to have any luck at all he'd play along for her sake.
"Collier ya say? Aye, you can be sure that I know that name. Name's Daurian. Town's been fine, but you can bet yer aether that it'd seem slow paced after being out and about like you've been."
She focused back on the gun. Seriously, was the wench ever going to put that thing away? Her arms were starting to get sore.
"Well, after taking that tumble I'm already achin' and then this sunny lass here seems intent to shoot eventually." She stopped as though she'd just thought of something, "Say, haven't seen any of the tunnelers round bouts have ya? Pa's been tellin' me I ought to be careful in these parts. Wouldn't wanna get caught with one a those about."
Finally the white haired woman let her gun drop. It felt like ages. Daurian let her arms drift to her sides and casually rested a hand on the hilt of her sword. No one treated a Collier like some sort of criminal. Especially not a surface dweller like her. She pushed her anger aside and forced herself to keep a smile. She'd keep up this gull as long as she could. She took a few steps closer to Tartious before the loud surfacer started barking orders. Who did she think she was? Some sort of drill sergeant?
"Guess I'm with you folks for a bit then." It was more of a statement than a question. When the woman turned around again she realized that the gun that she'd hidden probably belonged to her and smothered a hoot of laughter. Good. It would serve that uppity floozy right after her abuse. No doubt she had been no more pleasant to Tartious.
Way beyond the ties that bind
This I know
The risk is worth the gain
It's worth the sacrifice.
