Origin and Growth of Shin-Ra
Shin-Ra; a corporation that began with a simple purpose that would provide towns and cities a steady stream of electricity that outstripped the sluggish generators. People had struggled to run their lights and various electronics to the point that they avoid using the devices until they were needed. Hospitals were desperate for better equipment and providence. Coal just wasn't enough to use for their power. This was an opportunity that gave Shin-Ra their first leg.
While these were the people's blessings, this wasn't done out of the goodness of the president's heart. He could see that people were desperate, and desperation meant money eagerly pushed into his hands. Soon because of his company's evolution of technology, the other electric companies were shut down to pave the way for the company's succession, needing only a few years before they were the only company to give the poor people what they need.
Providing electricity wasn't enough over the years. With the absolute want for power not only over income but people, Shin-Ra became multi-business, becoming a military power that overwhelmed any cities' army. Most gave up their power to Shin-Ra when they were offered to join forces with Midgar, leading to complete control over one continent, owning rights to the Great Glacier and over half of the western continent's settlements bowed to their rule.
Their source of electricity was their Mako Reactors, a powerful generator that only needed to be installed in a settlement then only needed to be tended to when maintenance was required. It was because the fuel was the Mako itself, tubes from the reactor dipping into the strange liquid.
Despite the usefulness of these reactors, they weren't accepted by all. Like any fossil fuel, it wasn't infinite; someday, the Mako Reactors could suck up every drop of Mako and would leave nothing behind of the source. But it wasn't the only reason.
Mako was from the Lifestream, hidden beneath the layers of earth that covered Gaia, and this Lifestream was where people joined when they die, becoming one with the planet to continue life and eventually be reborn again. By many, this was just a superstitious belief, yet it couldn't be denied that a soul must go somewhere.
Only a few towns refused the offer from Shin-Ra, and while they remain independent, the company will not leave them alone for very long. They will take control when they're ready. People who opposed the decision to join Shin-Ra left their various towns and cities to go elsewhere, but the president was confident that soon every settlement would be under his control, giving those people little choice when that time comes.
But in the meantime, the military of Shin-Ra continued to expand and grow, approaching the time that they will need elites to carry out orders as no other can follow. Scientists were added to the payroll, organizations were created, and it was time to unleash their new project; the JENOVA project, giving birth to their elites known as SOLDIER.

It had been twenty-three years since Shin-Ra began the SOLDIER project. The SOLDIER's best warrior was a man named Sephiroth, followed closely by Angeal and Genesis, both of whom are of great power and nearly rivaled the great hero's own. These men are greatly respected and admired, though they were also feared by the people in equal amount. Many cadets of the military would give up their souls to have even a shred of these heroes' power and strength. It cannot be denied though that those who join the organization would enter as a normal person and would walk out changed. Mako showers were common practice, as were the use of cells from a Cetra Shin-Ra had uncovered several years prior.
Keeping the peace in the various settlements, it was rare to send out the heroes themselves to deal with any situation. But battles were becoming more common, monsters that usually kept to themselves away from cities would attack people, and a new group of people were becoming dangerous. These people calls themselves Avalanche, a terrorist organization that are consisted of people who refused Shin-Ra's promises and viewed them as a direct insult and violation to life. This group will resort to any means of destroying Shin-Ra even at the cost of innocent people who lives in Shin-Ra's safety.
While the terrorists are a major concern, the president has set his sights on a land that was rich with mako, though despite his most tempting offers, the residents of Wutai were resilient. They will not accept Shin-Ra's deal, as the chosen location was on their most sacred grounds. Almost every settlement had joined the company, and President Shinra has become very greedy and selfish. He may not be denied for long. Wutai's best chances was to join and aid the Avalanche group, doing so in the shadows so as to keep their involvement quiet. Avalanche became much more powerful, and even the president must pull his eyes away from his desired prize to deal with these intruders to his business.
It was decided to bring in new people into the SOLDIER organization and squash the terrorists into the dirt. So thus fresh recruits are now provided with the action, and only a few of them would be able to prove their worth and rise the ranks. Shin-Ra became interested to see whom could make it that far.
