- How did he know that as soon as he was out of sight, his best friends would come in and try to take all of his daughter’s attention? Having showered last night, Cameron only took a couple minutes to take a quick shower and was now drying himself off when he heard the door open and Chris’s voice could be heard through the bathroom door. Cameron couldn’t help but roll his eyes in amusement as the thin walls of his dorm allowed him to listen as one of his best friends spoke to his daughter in gibberish speech. He could not believe how in love his best friends were to Mia.
It brought to mind the days before Mia was born when her mother was pregnant with her. He had to admit to himself that even though they had been best friends since their first year because they shared the same dorm back in Salem, Mia was the reason why Cameron was even closer to Chris and Sam. They were the first to know about him getting Mia’s mom pregnant and they were the first to know that she was going to deliver. The guys had been with him during the entire time, save for the delivery since only he was allowed in the room. But afterwards, the two never left his side. They never left after Mia’s mom died during the delivery, and they never left when it was determined that Mia was not breathing on her own and had to spend days in the ICU because of his critical condition. Cameron really owed a lot to these two. It was the main reason why he had decided, without a single doubt, that they would be the perfect godfathers for her. Because no matter how many times he thought about it, those two must have fallen in love with Mia at first sight just as much as he had the second her bloody form appeared. Yes, there was no doubt about it that the perfect little child he called his daughter was the reason why he, Chris, and Sam were the best of friends now.
Cameron was in the middle of fixing his hair when he heard a knock on the door followed by Chris’s voice saying that Mia was obviously missing him more than her actual father. He rolled his eyes in amusement then chuckled. There was no point in answering back when it was just fact that no matter what those two said, Mia was going to love her biological father more than her godfathers, and Cameron had plenty of evidence to prove it. But for the benefit of his best friends, he was going to be nice and keep them to himself. Whatever made his best friends happy, he was not going to get in the way of it.
It didn’t even seem like minutes after Chris that Sam came into his room and fawned over Mia. He could hear different noises coming from the room and it literally made Cameron stop what he was doing to wonder what the hell was going on. He then concluded that it was probably just Sam using his ability to make Mia happy. It must have been working because his little girl was in fits of giggles that, after so much time with her, sounded to Cameron like she was also drooling a lot. He leaned against the wall to listen to his daughter’s contagious laughter, picturing in his head the times in his life when all he wanted was to hear that laugh and nothing else.
It made Cameron happy that the sight of her godfathers made Mia very excited. She was starting to become a very smart child and could remember faces now compared to a few months ago. There were times when Cameron felt that he wasn’t ready for his little angel to grow up. Then he remembered that her growing up meant fewer diapers to change and a part of him was encouraging it. He believed that he could not handle another round of watching his best friends change her diaper, after the first time he walked in on them attempting to change her for the first time, Cameron will never take the two seriously; not even when they have kids of their own. He will always remember that meat racked pot and his poor baby sitting there without a diaper on.
He was brought back from his trip down hilarious memory lane when Sam’s voice came through and told him his lame excuse that Mia liked him better. This made Cameron chuckle and shake his head. Pushing himself off the wall, he pulled his bathroom door open just as Sam exited. He looked down at Katy with an amused smirk on his lips. “I’m sorry for those two. They’re obviously desperate for Mia’s attention. Remind me to disinfect my laptop before we leave. Those two kissed my screen didn’t they?” he jested then moved to share the chair with Katy to look at his daughter. The little child’s face seemed to have lit up like the stars in the night sky at the sight of him. She even started let out a high shriek of excitement and clapped her hands enthusiastically while drool dribbled down her chin. “Oh, that’s very yummy, mamas. You’re already dribbling on your new bib Baba bought you, huh?” he cooed to his daughter, resting an arm on the back of the chair and around Katy. He turned to look at Katy with a smirk before bringing all his attention to Mia again. She was speaking inaudible gibberish again, this time fumbling with the necklace that Chris had gotten her as well as the tiara Sam bought her. This made Cameron chuckle. “You like the gifts that Uncle Chris and Uncle Sam bought you, mamas? They’re nice huh?” he asked with a smile.
He noticed that it was his grandfather that was now holding Mia, a small smile on his lips. “She can’t get over the tiara and the necklace. But don’t worry Cammie, she absolutely loved your package. Only her father would fully understand her love for monkeys. And the locket, I know how important it was to you. I’m happy that you’re giving it to Mia, though I would have recommended waiting a little longer.” The old man said, bouncing little Mia on his lap gently, resulting in the infant giggling uncontrollably. She was always a fan on being bounced when on someone’s lap. Cameron smiled softly. His grandfather was right, the locket he had given Mia for her gift was very important to him. It was the same locket he had given to Mia’s mother when she was pregnant. Now he wanted his favorite girl to have it, that way she could always know how beautiful her mother was. “We’ll make sure that she doesn’t break it, so she’ll only really wear it when you’re around. But we’ll also make sure that she doesn’t hurt herself with the gifts Chris and Sam gave her.” Cameron blinked once then looked at his daughter. He acknowledged that he understood with a silent nod and a smile. “Oh, and Katy. Thanks for the storybooks. Mia loves them.” Cameron looked at his friend with a bright smile. She would give Mia books.
Looking down at his watch, Cameron’s eyes widened then he looked at Katy. “We gotta go or we’ll be late. Hey Gramps, I’ll call you later tonight so you can put Mia to sleep. I realize it’s late now,” he explained, bringing the laptop closer to him so that he could hang up soon. However, any kind of goodbye did not happen because Mia must have sensed that he was going to leave. “BABA!” Mia had cried out, a frown on her face as she reached her hands out to him as if she was hoping that he would take her and hold her. A frown appeared on Cameron’s face and he looked worriedly at Katy. He hated these kinds of moments. He knew that any second, Mia was going to act hard-headed and start crying. So these next few seconds had to be acted out fast. With a sigh, Cameron looked to the screen again with a bright, reassuring smile. “Mia, baby, Baba has to go. And you have to go to sleep now. I’ll talk to you later when you wake up okay? I’ll be right here waiting for you. I promise, baby. Baba needs to go now. I love you.” After he motioned a kiss to the screen, Cameron said goodbye to his grandparents then allowed Katy to say her goodbyes and quickly ended the call before he could see his daughter cry. He knew that she would start crying after he hung up, but what else could he do?
For a second, Cameron allowed a tired look to appear on his face before he took a deep breath and stood up off the chair. “Come on, we better get going before this storm gets any worse.”

For the most part, Cameron thought that Herbology class today went by too slowly. He wasn’t even that interested in flesh-eating trees. Most of the time he spent in class today was passing notes to Elisa who was sitting in front of her. The topic of their discussion was Anaily. Cameron had to give the girl props for being able to keep their conversation away from eyesight of Anaily. Eventually, the two had to stop passing notes because the Asian female brought all her attention to Anaily for some reason. It didn’t matter anyway because Cameron already knew what he had to do. Elisa had done her part, it was time for him to do his.
Once class ended, Cameron waited for Anaily to leave before he went off after her. He wasn’t following her. He was just keeping a close eye on her as much as he could. Eventually, they were both in the same hallway with him a few feet behind her, but not noticeable enough to make it obvious he was trailing her. It was now or never. With a deep breath, Cameron pulled out his iPhone and scrolled to his photos. But just as he was about to walk to Anaily, he heard someone call out to him. Turning his head, Cameron smiled at Enzo as the guy came closer. The smile faltered for a second when he took sight of the guy’s nose. He had heard about the fight between Zak and Charlie earlier and that it was because Zak punched Enzo. He felt sorry for his friend, but he was also glad that he was also alright.
“Hey, man. I heard about what happened earlier. I hope things are good with you; though the nose does give you a bit of a bad a** look. And Mia’s good. I was just talking to her this morning. And it’s nine months, not six. I wish she was just six months though. I don’t think I’m ready for her to grow up just yet,” he answered with a chuckle. Turning his head, he checked to make sure that Anaily was still in the hallway. She was. He turned his head to look at his friend again with a nervous smile. “Hey, listen. Wanna back me up? Eli has been helping me figure out a way to do this plan for weeks without telling anyone. I was going to do this on my own, but you having my back would make this easier for me. Come on.” With a huge grin on his face, Cameron wrapped an arm around Enzo’s shoulders and led him hastily over to where Anaily was.
“Ana! Wait up!” Cameron cried out, stopping right in front of her. He released his arm from around Enzo’s shoulder with a wink then turned his attention to the female in front of him. “Hey, listen, I was wondering about two things. First, do you wanna study later? Since we have a test coming up soon, maybe you and I could study together. Two heads are better than one.” He chuckled nervously, rubbing the back of his neck with the hand that was not tightly holding onto his phone. Pausing for a second, he looked from Anaily to Enzo then back to Anaily. It really was now or never. Clearing his throat, he continued. “Um, Mia turned nine months today. I wish you saw her, she’s so big now.” He paused again for dramatic effect. “Oh wait, my grandparents sent me a recent photo of her. Check it out.” With a deep breath, and a quick look to Enzo for support, Cameron scrolled to his photos and selected the first photo in the folder dedicated only to Mia’s pictures. He wasn’t lying when he said that this was a recent photo. It was just that this photo was recent for a reason. He looked at the photo for a second, let out a sigh then handed the phone over to Anaily. In the photo, Mia was sitting up in her play pen. She had one of her adorable toothless smiles on her face and her hands were messing with her hair. She was wearing a pink onesie with the words “Go to the ball with my Baba?” stitched on the front in blue letters.
Yes, Cameron was asking Anaily to the ball. This had been Elisa’s plan for days and it only took her and Chris’s pestering to actually go along with it. As he waited for a response, Cameron calmly stuck his hands—which were actually sweating—into his pockets and turned his eyes towards Enzo. He really wanted to ask what his friend would think Anaily would say, but obviously that would be a stupid thing to do.
