The sun rose and fell just like it did any other day; the wind blew, the birds sang, the crickets chirped. Everything was just like it was and just like it had been every other day... The only thing that had changed... We're people. Now that notion, that idea, isn't what someone would consider odd or strange. People change all the time, it's how we all adapt to our surroundings, how we live in the world and how we cope with the day to day challenges that are presented to us. It's normal, it's not scary or threatening, it's simply... Life... But that's not what was witnessed that day. It was not what was witnessed by passengers on flight 461... Nor was it what was witnessed by people in the airport terminal after that plane landed. On that day life was just a dull light, being ravaged, chewed and devoured by the dark shadows of DEATH...
Subtle growls brought Lyra's attention to what was going on in front of her as the plane started to ascend into the air. Looking over the seats to see an older man she had noticed looking rather deathly ill when she boarded the plane, chomping down on one of her SWAT Team members throats.
"Caleb!" Lyra shouted to her Team-mate as the man reached out for help blood pouring out of his throat. This brought the attention of others to the scene that was unfolding; a woman gave a terrified shriek as one of the other SWAT members undid his belt to help his fellow man. Getting up from his seat he punched the older man feasting on the SWAT Members throat and tried to pull him out of the seat but the buckle kept him in place. Suddenly the older man lunged for the second SWAT Member and chomped down on the side of his neck. More screams and shouts felt the cabin as the Pilots called back to find out what was going on.
A third SWAT Member, Lyra's Captain took off his belt and started towards the scene; using the isle seats to carry his weight he lifted himself off the ground and planted a solid kick sending the man against the side of the plane with a loud thud.
"LOCSLEY!" The Captain shouted over his shoulder as he pulled the second SWAT Member from the seat and into the isle bracing himself on the floor with the man in his lap. Lyra appeared at the Captains side as the plane started to level out a bit.
"Locsley, stop the bleeding..." The SWAT Captain ordered the woman as she put pressure on the wound.
"Let me work Richard. I know what I'm doing." Looking to the man in Richards lap she started to speak gently to him,
"Michael it's going to be alright... Just try to keep calm and don't speak, ok." The man was choking on his own blood and with as much damage as there was to his neck and throat both uninjured SWAT members knew that Michael was not going to make it. Lyra could hear people panicking in behind her; one of the Flight attendants came over to see what was going on as she passed by the blood covered seats the sick man grabbed hold of her leg and chomped down on her back calf. Falling to the ground the female flight attendant shouted in pain and terror as the man started to eat away at the flesh on her leg.
Richard got up from the floor and Lyra took over holding Michael in her lap watching as the SWAT Captain, pulled free one of the mans arms that was digging tightly into the flesh of the woman. Twisting it back and stomping down hard the bone snapped sending more blood about the cabin; however the sick man refused to let the woman go. His broken arm not phasing him in the least. Richard looked to a metal food cart and went for it. Running down the isle with it he rammed the cart into the mans head and face. Splattering blood and brain matter against the one side of the cart. The woman started to convulse on the ground as she went into shock. The SWAT Captain, removed his belt from his pants and fastened it around the woman's leg, making a tourniquet.
"Locsley, I need your help down here!" Richard tried to keep calm as he tried to aid the attendant.
Lyra looked to the people around her and grabbed a tall rugged looking man by the wrist and pulled him to her level,
"What's your name?"
The man seemed confused by her question and stumbled to remember his name,
"I... Umm.. De.. Dimitris..."
"Dimitris, I need you to hold this and keep pressure on his wound, I have to go help the woman behind me, okay. You keep him awake and talk to him to keep him calm. His name is Michael..." The rugged man nodded shakily as he took her place at the downed SWAT Members body. Locsley then made her way to her Captain and the woman on the floor,
"She's going into shock, elevate that leg." Locsley tightened the tourniquet and used some blankets under the seats to try and stop the bleeding as the plane started to make its emergency landing in Georgia.
The SWAT Captain looked to Lyra as he tried his best to help her with the attendant,
"Locsley, what just happened?" Lyra took a deep breath and looked around her at all the scared faces and blood. It was a mess.
By the time the plane had made it's emergency landing the people on the plane were crying distraught wrecks. Lyra had kept herself busy trying to keep Michael comfortable as he slowly bled out. The SWAT Captain kept a close watch on his man but he was also trying to deal with the injured flight attendant. It had all happened so fast, Lyra tried to work through the situation again in her mind. What was wrong with that man? Why would he have done that? Was he sick? Had his brain completely melted? Lyra's gaze lifted from her teammate to the brain matter on the food cart.
Well his brain wasn't of any use anymore She though to herself as her gaze fell back to the man in her lap.
"Locsley... You.. You tell Melissa.. Ttt... Tell her..." Michael made subtle sputtering cough sounds before blood started to lace the inside of his mouth, working its way out onto his lips and face.
"Easy now Michael... I tell her.. You just worry about staying with me here." Michael nodded the best he could as his gaze drifted to the side. He stared off into the distance for a moment before Lyra shook him softly.
"..Michael..." Lyra closed her eyes for a moment as she felt for a pulse. Looking over her shoulder she looked to her Captain.
"Michael's gone, Richard." The Captain looked over to Lyra and it was clear that the man wanted to explode emotionally. Turning his back to Lyra he focused on the woman who was now out of shock but was crying softly in his lap.
Apparently they were not the only ones who had been having problems with people, there were others who were dying and then coming back to life, the government had been trying to keep it quite but this virus was working fast. All it took was a bite and you went down, Lyra stood in the terminal reading the news as the headlines came up over the screen. Containment had failed in half the united states and marshal law had been implemented in the rest of the country. How had this all gone down hill so fast? The man who had assisted Lyra earlier on the plane set nestled into a chair asleep, his feet propped up on her two duffel bags while he used his own as head rest. Lyra looked to the man and rolled her eyes shaking her head softly. Her SWAT Captain, Richard, had gone with the bodies of his downed men to see where they were going to be taken and to check on the flight attendant. Lyra mauled over the information she had received as the realization of what she had just heard on the news and what had happened on the plane hit her. Eyes going wide Lyra turned to reach towards the man asleep when gunshots echoed through the terminal. The man named Dimitris sat up, wide eyed and looking around as rush of people started towards them screaming. It was just going to be one of those days...
- Current Day -
Swoosh...Thunk...Thud... An arrow sailed through the air and connected with a Walker's head before it fell to the ground, truly dead. A dark haired woman with fierce blue eyes walked towards the creature that lay on the ground. Placing her boot on its head, the woman gave a hearty tug and removed the arrow from the creatures temple before cleaning it off on her pant leg.
"Oh, Locsley!" A voice rang out from behind some trees and bushes that rustled gently. The dark haired woman huffed gently and stepped around the side of the bushes. A large dead woman had tackled a man to the ground and was currently chomping and trying to bite at him.
"Well, lookie there.. Got yourself a girlfriend Dimitris?"
The man on the ground under the large woman, glared at the dark haired woman briefly as the creature atop him continued to try for him. The man she had called Dimitris was struggling to keep the overweight creature from gnawing at his face. Suddenly an arrow swished through the side of its skull and the woman slumped putting its full weight on him. Dimitris gasped and it brought a subtle scoff from the dark haired woman.
"Lyra!" The man called out softly as he tried to lift the dead weight off himself. The dark haired woman rolled her eyes and helped push the creature off her companion. The creature rolled off the man and slumped once more to the ground, the man lay there for a moment before looking to the woman with a hunting bow slung over her shoulder, a quiver of arrows at her back.
"You know, Locsley.. For someone who's as pretty as you are. Your probably bout as cuddly as Jellyfish" The woman scoffed gently and offered the man a hand up. He gladly took the hand and allowed her to help him to his feet. Walking towards the downed large woman, Lyra removed the arrow from its skull as she had with the other walker before wiping the bodily fluids on her pant leg.
"I could have just left you and your girlfriend there for some alone time."
"Though the idea of allowing Ol'Betsy there to eat me is just top of my bucket list. I'm going to decline that sweet offer." Dimitris replied with that sarcastic grin on his face that Lyra was very familiar with. It was one that said go F*** yourself. Lyra adjusted the gear she had on her and looked towards their means of transport. The pair and picked up a national guard ambulance, that looked like it had been re-enforced with what ever was lying around. Thanks to Dimitri's background in welding the two had been able to build themselves a movable fortress that they were constantly adding to. The vehicle sat in the distance and was locked up tightly. They had been out doing a bit of hunting and were looking for a fresh source of water when they stumbled upon a small group of walkers. The creatures were dispatched easily enough but they needed to keep on the move. It wasn't safe to stay in one place for too long.
"So, what do you think we should do? We could press on into the woods, do a bit more hunting and looking for more water, or we head back to the truck and keep moving."
"You tell me, Oh Fearless Leader." Dimitris pipped up as he found a cluster of dirt and leaves smashed into his pants and started to dust them away.
"We need a fresh source of water, the truck will keep. You can't get into the thing without knowing how to unlock the door and no crowbar is going to do the job. You did say the map of the county has a stream that runs close to here right?"
Lyra nodded and placed her hands on her hips, considering their options. Reaching into one of the pockets on her tactical vest she wore that clearly labeled SWAT on the back. Pulling a map from the pocket she nodded reading it,
"it's just over that treeline. But there's a town not far, that way. It's says Woodbury on the map, we might be able to scavange through some of the homes and stores. Pick up other supplies."
"Tell you what Locsley.. We go to Woodbury to check out the town. See what we can find. That water isn't going anywhere, but the supplies could be scavenged by others." Dimitris picked up a crowbar he had dropped on the ground and looked to Lyra placing a hand on her shoulder before taking the map and looking it over.
"There's a road that runs along side that stream, they meet at this crossroad.. Is that a Prison?" Dimitris questioned looking at the map. Lyra peered over the man's shoulder and nodded.
"We could take a look at it, if its safe and we can get inside maybe we could hold up for a day, makes some repairs to the truck and then head out to Woodbury."
"What if we stayed?" Dimitris questioned gently handing Lyra the map back.
Lyra scoffed and tucked the map away back into it's pocket,
"We can't stay.. We have to keep moving, we can't fend off a prison, what if people come along and decide to take it for themselves. We are out numbered by anything more then 2, it's not safe for us to set up shop just anywhere." Lyra started for the truck.
"We can't do this forever Locsley..."
Lyra stopped and turned to face Dimitris,
"Says you.. Come on, we can talk about this later, we've got a town to find and I'm sure that prison isn't going anywhere either."
Both worked their way back to the truck and once inside started towards the town of Woodbury. The truck hummed along as Dimitris drove and Lyra sat in the passengers side. It wasn't a long trek through the cars and along the side road, it seemed that most of the cars had been pulled aside to clear the road. Veering off the road Dimitris followed the signs that read Woodbury and just before the road clearing came up to Some houses he pulled off to the side of the road.
"We scout these houses and stores on the outskirts of the town before we head to the center. If we find someplace good enough to hold up in for the night we can rest and then make some adjustments to the car. Maybe find a garage with some tools."
Dimitris nodded and they both exited the vehicle after pulling it further off the road so not to be in the way or to be noticed by any oncoming cars. Moving away from the truck, the two walked almost silently through the streets, stalking through parked cars and unkempt yards, eyes out for the dead. Thankfully there wasn't much dead to worry about for the time being. The occasional walker stumbled along their path but they were dispatched easily enough. Finally, Lyra signaled towards a house with an open door; gesturing to Dimitris that she wanted to inspect the house. Making her way inside the house with her bow in hand she walked carefully through the house. Making sure to watch each step she checked each room. Lyra scanned it momentarily looking for signs of people or dead occupying it. There seemed to no movement from the inside the house and once the place was clear they started to go through the items inside. Clothing, food, water, weapons, anything that could be used to survive was an essential. Dimitris went to the garage and started to go through the items in there while Lyra went upstairs to keep a look out and to go through the bedrooms.
