Reed had been looking down at her open notebook on her desk. They were actually last year's notes for an entirely different class, but she had to have something to do. If she just looked around, the teacher might try to strike up a conversation with her, and then she'd be the center of attention, or her classmates would start teasing her slightly. So, she had to give herself something to look at.
She jumped slightly, though, when someone ran into the room at the last possible second and jumped again when someone yelled out loudly right after the guy came in. When Reed raised her head from her notebook to look at who had entered, she saw that it was Blake Winterwood. It was quite odd to see him coming in late. He was usually right on time, if not in fact early.
She didn't have much time to think about it, though. Mr. Kraig stood up to begin class and laughed softly at the antics of the individual who had yelled 'Safe'.
"Alright, alright, James. Thank you for that announcement. Now, please, sit down, and you as well, Blake."
Once everyone was seated and the laughter had died down, Mr. Kraig sat on the top of his teacher's desk in front of the class. "Now, I don't really have an itinerary to follow as your homeroom teacher, but I would like to know what you all did this summer. Let's start with...."
His eyes fell on Reed, who was still looking at her notebook. He had known from past classes he had had with her that she was paying attention. She just didn't want to look up. He wanted to try and help her come out of her shell. It was so hard to do when your peers were trying to come into their own, sometimes at the expense of others around them, but he couldn't just give up on her.
"Reed. Please tell us about your summer vacation."
Reed nearly cringed when Mr. Kraig called her name first. Great... But, she stood up slowly and took a deep breath. She tried to shut out the soft laughter behind her and some of the comments. She was used to them.
"Yeah, this should be over in 2 minutes."
"All we're going to hear about is her riding her horse. Can I take a nap?"
They had been whispered to their friends, but Mr. Kraig still heard them. He looked sternly at the students before him, and that was all he had to do. Students knew not to mess with Mr. Kraig. He was an awesome, cool teacher. You didn't want to get on his bad side.
Reed continued, her voice soft but still audible and clear. "I... I went with my father to the state's capital for the farm fair there. We bought 20 new horses and I worked on training them this summer. A lot of our heifers also gave birth this summer."
She heard the soft giggling behind her as she quickly sat down.
