For one great, long moment, Kaiden’s mother was completely speechless. She looked over her son a couple of times, trying to figure out if this boy was really the child she bore seventeen years ago. Tears filled her eyes and an ecstatic smile grew on her lips as she ran over to her son, hugging him tightly. “Oh!!! Kaiden Gonen Odakota! You!! You come back after three years! I can’t believe how much you’ve grown!!!” she exclaimed, wrapping her arms around him even tighter. Kae Gonen struggled to smile as her mother smothered him with her hug, but returned the hug anyways. A while later, the blond-haired mother let go of her son and backed up, wiping away some tears and looking at Rachel with a smile on her face. “Oh dear, don’t apologize! It looks like Kaiden finally got himself a girlfriend. Why didn’t you tell me?!” she said, giving her son a rather mischievous look.
At the mention of ‘girlfriend,’ Kaiden’s calm face suddenly went extremely red and shook his head violently. “M-Mom!!! Noo!!! S-She’s not my girlfriend! She’s just a friend!” he stuttered, trying to will the blush away. How many times would he get teased today? His mother couldn’t help but to giggle and she looked at Rachel again, giving her a friendly look.
“Well, it’s a pleasure to meet you, too. I’m June Odakota, Kaiden’s mother, as I’m sure you know,” she said, holding out a hand, offering a handshake. “It’s great to see that Kaiden has been able to bring home a friend, though he’s always been surrounded by such lovely people, now including you! I couldn’t have asked for a better son!” she continued, smiling proudly at Kaiden.
Kae couldn’t help but to roll his eyes with a smile on his face. The Guardian of Lugia turned to look at Skar, who was simply standing and staring at him. The two of them then looked at the window, wondering how Craft was—well, only Kaiden wondered how Craft was, Skar would be extremely relieved if she was gone. With a sigh, Kaiden looked back at his mother and Rachel, and then looked at the stairs she came down from. He ran a hand through his blue hair and was silent for a while. June caught her son’s eyes but then her own looked down to Kaiden’s scarf and long-sleeves. She cocked an eyebrow and then moved over to her son and tugged on his scarf, taking him by surprise when she took it off. The young teen jumped in protest and reached for the scarf, but was too late when his mother saw the three scars on his neck. Her eyes widened and her hands went to her hands, dropping the scarf and worry growing in her eyes.
“Kaiden! What happened?!” she shouted.
‘Damn…’ Kaiden thought, allowing his head to droop. He turned his gaze towards the stairs and then stood straight up again. “I suppose you would have found out sooner or later. I got into an accident in Hoenn—now! I’m going to go change! Skar, take care of them!!!” he said, picking up the scarf and running away before his mother could say any more about his strange scars. She sighed, though, knowing that whatever it was, it was in the past, and as long as her son was fine, then she was fine. Her look turned to Rae once again, and she smiled a little.
“That boy has always been this way. He hates it when others worry for him. Always has to be the hero, you know,” she explained. June Odakota then broke out in a big grin and took Rachel by the hand, guiding her to the kitchen. “Dear, would you like something to eat? A snack or a drink maybe? My husband brought some fresh Moo-Moo milk yesterday! I’ve also got some cookies that I made myself—but they’re not that great. I’ve always been a very busy woman, so I never learned how to cook really nice and gourmet meals. That’s why Kae left, you know, he was lonely here. Both the adventurer and the hero!” she joked, giggling. “But if you don’t want anything, don’t feel bothered to sit in the living room while we wait for Kaiden to finish. I hope he’s fine with the new clothes I had stocked his closet with. I’m glad I anticipated his growth,” she continued, smiling again before she gasped. “Oh dear, I’m talking too much, I’m sorry. I’m just excited that he’s back…” Kaiden’s mother blushed a little, bringing her hand up to her mouth.
Upstairs, Kaiden was lying down on his old bed, realizing that he was too tall for it now. He smiled at how much he had grown, and gazed at the pictures that were taped to the roof and the walls all over the place. One in particular caught his attention. It was a beautiful white bird with a light-blue belly. He sat up and walked over to take off the picture from the wall and examine it. That bird must be Lugia, the bird that was always in his dreams. He smiled at the memories then put the picture down, eyeing the closet. The Guardian of Lugia doubted that he would fit in any old clothes anymore, but when he opened the closet, he was greeted by a load of new clothes. His eyes widened at the wide variety, and then thanked the God of Pokémon that he had the family he did. Without a second thought, he pulled out the most “bad-boy” clothing that he found in there. First, a light-blue shirt that looked like it had its sleeves torn off, and then a light gray vest to go on top. Some faded olive-green baggy pants. He would use the same belt, same boots, and keep his green ribbon that he used to hold his pokéballs. He quickly changed then stared at his figure in the full-body mirror that was in his room. Although Kaiden didn’t like it very much, his arms and neck were now completely out in plain view, revealing the scars that he had received in the ambush from the Shiftry and Victreebell. He stared at the scar on the inside of his wrist on his right hand and frowned. Kaiden looked around and then stopped when he saw a white and blue baseball cap on the frame of his bed. A pair of gloves—black with a red Velcro strap—lay atop the cap, and a smile formed on Kae Gonen’s lips. Without a second thought, he put his slightly-long hair in a short pony-tail and slipped the cap on, putting it on bill-backwards. He slipped on the gloves, and then stared at the final product of his outfit-change. Kaiden grinned at himself, then ran downstairs to greet his mother and Rachel in his new outfit after he had folded and slipped his picture of Lugia in his pocket.
Once he arrived downstairs, and looked for Skar, who was standing in the living room. The teen found his mother and Rae, then spread his arms out, showing off his new outfit. “So, what do you think? Think anybody’ll recognize me? I know the blue hair’ll always be a damned give-away, but still! You like?” he asked, turning around. The young Guardian only received a short giggle from his mother, along with a smile from her—although she was trying not to gasp at the scars on his arms.
“As handsome as ever. A pity your father’s at work right now. But please don’t tell me you only came to change, Kaiden…” June asked. Kaiden looked at Skar then at the window again, his mood turning slightly sad. He nodded then slipped his hands into the pockets of his new pants and shrugged, pausing when he felt the folded piece of paper that held Lugia’s drawing.
“Sadly…we’re in a hurry. Our plans were kind of ruined but—“ he paused as he examined the picture once more. “Mom. Do you think anybody around here knows about Lugia? I know we got experts to look into my dreams a while back…but we need to get information fast and leave this place as soon as possible…” he said, with some regret in his voice.
June sighed and crossed her arms, looking at the picture in her son’s hands. “There was a sailor that was talking about the Whirl Islands the other day, about how it used to and might still shelter a beautiful great bird of the Sea. He came by the other day, and he might still be in the Pokémon Center. But Kaiden, I don’t know why you’re in such a hurry…but please be careful…” June begged, giving her son a sad look.
“I will, plus. I’ve got a mighty fine team and a great friend by my side, Mom! You know I’d never break a promise with you or Dad!” By now, Kaiden had moved to the window once again, but froze when he swore he saw a familiar green-tipped tail sway from side to side. He hid behind the curtains of the window and narrowed his eyes to look at the scene better. A sudden shiver ran up his spine when he turned around to look at both his mother and Rachel with an expression full of worry and regret. “That moustache man has Craft. Dammit!!! He probably knows where we are now!!! What do we do?! We can’t get anybody else involved in this mess, and here I led him straight to my house! Dammit, dammit, dammit—“ he cursed, being stopped by a slap across his face. Kaiden turned to look at his mother who wore an angry look.
“No cursing! I don’t know what’s going on, but stay calm!! Just sit down, and we’ll figure out a way for you two to get out safely, okay? I can take care of myself, Kaiden. You’re not the only one with a team,” June Odakota said with a grin on her face. She pulled out a friend ball from her pocket and held it out. Inside was young Mightyena with a beautiful pink collar around its neck. Kaiden smiled slightly, rubbing his cheek, then sat down on the couch. He turned to look at Rachel, asking her with his eyes about what they were going to do. He was far too worried to think straight. Kaiden just hoped that Craft would be alright…
