Welcome to Gaia! ::

The bell for class rung, and Matsuda stood up. He had to show these kids that he was the boss. Then he realized he forgot to come up with a alias! If Kira was in this class, he had to come up with something. He put the first alias he could think of on the board "I am Sensei Taro Matsui!" He declared. He doubted anyone would notice it. "I will be your teacher in this Criminal Justice Course for the next semester."

Ryuu blinked unsure what to think of the teacher's optimism. Was it his first time teaching this class? Oh well, that made it all the easier to slack off.

(Anyone remember that alias? It's a pretty obvious one mrgreen )

Adam sighed. That soesn't sound like a real name, and judging from his hesitation I would say that he's using an alias, or he just has first day jitters. He thought, his chin resting on his hands.

((Nope, not really, I'm horrible with names.))

User Imagecanning the information about the course over revealed that it was taken in conjunction with high school. The class was a fusion between an advanced placement elective and a normal class, with both college and high school students. Courses with that type of a layout weren't entirely unheard of, but they were rare. The class was also supposed to take place outside of the standard school building, in a classroom closer to where the high school students were. He couldn't decide for himself which part was more odd, so he just accepted it for what it was with a sigh.

It was mysterious, and he could figure out the cause if he asked the right probing questions, but the messenger was not the person to ask. Cian could tell that he was being honest about being entirely clueless. "Thanks for the message," he tacked hs manners on at the end. It wasn't this guy's fault that he had to deliver such a horrible message, and he'd been as helpful as was possible for him to be.

Cian usually got to sleep in on days like these, but due to the timing, he was forced to get up early on what should have been a day off. He held his travel mug between his hands, blowing into the tea to try and cool it down. His backpack was draped across his shoulder like normal, and he was wearing a different outfit, but other than that he was normal.

It wasn't the same walk, between the school campus and his regular campus. Cian had arrived a minute late. He sat down in the front, near the door, accommodating for his missing eye by letting his left eye overlook the entire room aside from the door.
(GRR! I kind of used that alias just for you! It's the same alias he used while he was Misa's manager!)

Matsuda was just about to pass out the class rules when the new student walked in. He practicly jumped at the fact that the student had one-eye. 'Just stay calm! You asked for the quiet, smart and weird ones!' He reminded himself. He then went back to passing out the outlines. They were a basic list of class rules, with absolutely no notice of what they'd be doing in the class.

User Imageian set his bag down on the floor. He noticed that his hair had scattered, particularly his bangs, while he was walking. He set his hand over the top of his bangs and forced them to drape over the top of the missing eye. His haircut was supposed to mask it, and ordinarily it did. He'd just been in such a rush to get here that it hadn't set right this morning.

The hand out did end up on his desk, same as it had for any other student. Cian opened up his new textbook to the front page. The rules of the class were both generic and straightforward, but the problem he had was contained within the lesson, or more specifically, the lack of one. It took a matter of seconds for Cian to get the very distinct impression that this was going to be a waste of his time. He propped the textbook up on a slight tilt and opened up his sketchbook to work on something that would be of an actual benefit. He was discreet enough about it that it looked like he was just reading or jotting down a quick note- still, it could be noticed, because he used such a strange pen.

((I did remember the name, but my character wouldn't get the reference. : D ))

Adam had been mulling over where he thought he had heard the new teacher's name before, then it hit him. That was Misa's old manager's name! He realized, no doubt in his mind now that the teacher was using an alias. Adam kept his face calm, knowing that the teacher probably had his reasons, just as Adam had his reasons for using his alias.

((Sorry, I suck with names sweatdrop , thanks for telling me though, it helps move the story along.))

User Imageian hadn't noticed that he was a source of apprehension. It had been a long time since he'd paid any attention to those sorts of mannerisms. For whatever the reason, he was this constant inability to recognize other people's view of him. It had been a long time since he'd begun to block it out, and by now, he was for the most part oblivious.

He watched as the teacher moved across the classroom, and recorded the rest of his actions to analyze them. The way that he was stumbling across the room, how he had entirely neglected to present an actual lesson plan, it fully indicated that this was not a well thought out plan. Cian couldn't pinpoint what the actual purpose or intention of bringing this class together was, but he did see that this would be in the teacher's control and it had not been thought out fully. They had not been given a course curriculum because, aside from the book, there wasn't a curriculum.

"You have absolutely no idea what you're doing," he concluded aloud.
"That is not true!" Matsuda declared. Although it partly was. "I'm just trying to get to know my class on my first day." He decided to use as a explanation. He had already had a lesson plan prepared- except that gust of wind this morning had blown it away and now he had to do it by memory. "I thought we'd start on something interesting, so I thought we'd begin on discussing what your ideas of justice are." He didn't directly said the word Kira, but he wanted to see what each student's ideology was and compare them to what Light's was. Although if Kira really was in the class, he'd lie through his teeth. He turned to the student with a bandage on his eye. "If you want to be so smart about it, why don't you go first."

Ryuu found he had to agree with the student. This guy had no idea what he was doing. Did he even have a teaching degree. He went to say something to Karasu, when he saw a strange look on his face. "Something wrong?" He whispered.

User Imageeing required to sit here without a specificed reason was a little irritating to Cian. The course topic did hold potential to be interesting, but it didn't have even the remotest of connections with his own field of study. When he felt as if his time was being wasted with 'getting to know you' time, he wasn't going to hide it. The worst that could happen was that he would be ejected from the course, and when he was here forcibly, that wasn't really a bad thing.

More influentially, giving the teacher some cheek would either force him to step up and set his issues with confidence aside, or it would crack him. Either option was going to be beneficial. If he cracked, Cian got to find out if there was an ulterior motive to gathering them, and if he stepped up, at least they would get to learn something. It was a very sly tactic, choosing to antagonize him.

"Certainly. It's pointless enough." Cian could connect enough of the dots to know that the justice in question wasn't meant as the same definition. "Criminal justice is, in itself, a corrupt system. Laws were written with loopholes that allow the guilty to walk free, and the advancements in both average technology and forensics allow for previously solid proof to be dis-validated when presented to a jury, which never has been and never will be impartial. Because humans are inherently flawed in nature, none of us will be able to present a full view of justice. We all do wrong, and are so prone to self-justification that we will write off those wrongdoings as being acceptable if we ourselves partake in them.

"There is no such thing as such an abstract thought as justice. That you believe there is happens to be, in itself, a societal induced illusion that remains with us until our eventual death. There is, however, such a thing as moral bankruptcy and a party that's more guilty than those around them. In summary, professor, there is no justice within this world, only shades of gray lighter than the tints around it."

Matsuda blinked. Well... that was a fulfilling answer. It seemed like the exact kind of mentality that Kira would have. Matsuda would have immediately decided that this kid was Kira, before realizing that Kira wouldn't be that obvious. He wouldn't express himself as a Kira supporter like this. Unless Kira was trying to trick him into believing that. After all, Light must have been a incredible actor for all that time he had them believe he was against Kira. He decided that he didn't have enough information yet to make any determinations yet. But now he had to take charge and think of a response to this! "Well, what should society do about it? Condemn everyone that looks guilty, bringing the innocent down as well? You're right about one thing- the law isn't perfect. But we are human after all. So we just have to keep trying until one day we finally get it right." He replied. "Hey, you whispering in the back!" Matsuda declared. "Stand up and give us your answer on what you think justice is!" He said pointing at Ryuu in the back.

Ryuu really didn't like being noticed on the first day like this. Nor had he ever been told to stop speaking with how little he actually spoke to others on a normal basis. But as he was singled out, he had no choice but to go on with this debate. "As the saying goes, justice is blind. There are guilty that walk off free and innocent that are condemned. Such is the way of life. The kind and innocent live through pain, and the guilty and corrupt have money and power. Seeing as it's impossible to know everything, we can never rule out the possibility of a person's guilt or innocence. And so we walk blindly hoping to put as many murderers and thieves in jail as possible to keep as many 'innocent' people alive. Honestly, I agree with the last speaker. It all seems pointless. Yes, order is necessary, but we must realize that the law is nowhere near the justice we'd like it to be."

Matsuda blinked again. Did anyone really think that the police were doing a good job? Obviously not. Was this kid Kira? He seemed to not care much about the lesson either. He didn't care much for society, but he didn't seem radical enough to want all criminals to die. Again, he couldn't make any judgments just yet. "Anyone else want to volunteer?" Matsuda asked.

User Imagehis teacher was almost impressively idealistic. The answer was that there was no answer to it. "The guilty bring down the innocent of their own volition. The hand by which it is dealt changes, but the innocent will always be victims." Cian didn't want to interrupt the person who was supposed to be speaking, so he kept his voice within a whisper when he chose to speak up again. It was a debate that he wouldn't have minded having in full, but the classroom wasn't the place.

Devising a new system would do just as little good as the one in place would. Cian did have his entire set of theories on the subject, genetic pools, circumstances and the like, but he wasn't supposed to be leading a discussion of theories. The teacher had begun to take enough initiative that the class might not be a complete disaster.

Cian didn't bother to speak up again. He had served his purpose. He took his travel mug and took another sip of his tea, waiting to make more observations about the class' progression. He had another group of statements in mind should he have needed to make them, but for the time being, he would keep them to himself. When he was finished with the tea, Cian raised a hand to the side of his cheek and supported his head with his elbow, beginning to smile a little, which didn't occur often.

While making his observations of the room, Cian had begun to calculate the nature of the question that had been posed. The manner in which they were being lead to answer did seem to hold a certain indication, to the degree that 'introduction' was instead beginning to mirror the concept of 'interrogation'. Within that second, he had formed the theory. The people within this room didn't share a full aspiration, but the majority of them did fit an archetype of a general age bracket. He hadn't seen many other students from his school here (for that matter it was really just him and one other first year) but that was due to the fact that they were too old, and he wasn't.

This setup was an awful lot of trouble to go through when it lead into only one answer, and potentially, it opened up an entirely different avenue.

Cian had over an hour before he would need to return to his campus, and he was staying after class. Presenting this possibility in front of the others would be rude, but he wanted to gently pose the statement and probe in enough to prove or disprove what he had in mind.

Adam sighed. "I agree in the fact that justice is blind." He started. "And those who take the law into their own hands are not necesarily above the law, they just do their best to enforce their own moral law, take Kira for example, his moral law was that no criminals deserve to live, but who is he to judge who is guilty and not? We all have our flaws, but those who do have proof, the proof that is solid and can convict the guilty, that is justice."
Matsuda didn't think someone would be so quickly to bring Kira into question- then again, the subjects were intertwined in these days. "It's hard to say who's guilty and who isn't... sure the court makes mistakes sometimes, but we can't just let murderers go free! That's why the court puts as much consideration as possible into the-" And then he saw the student with the eye patch sipping tea. It sort of reminded him of Ryuzaki enjoying his sweets while hearing the facts run by him, as if in his own little world. "Um, you do know there's no food and drinks aloud in my class." 'How did he even bring that in here?! Does he carry a thermos of hot tea around?!'
User Image
Adam sighed. "Yes sir, that is true, the court does put a lot of consideration into the verdict, but juries never have, and never will be fully impartial, it's human nature to go with what most people believe to be the answer, and therein lies the problem, human nature is what stands between an innocent man being locked up, and a guilty one going free."
"Which is what happens most of the time- the police has relied more on locking people up then the death penalty. Although Kira doesn't seem to think that's enough." Matsuda said rolling his eyes. "I guess everyone can agree that justice isn't perfect... but the point of this class is studying the law's best attempt at justice!"

Ryuu rolled his eyes. Kira's aim this time around wasn't to bring justice with criminals. Sure, that was a minor thing, but the main focus was the medical field. It would be criminals dieing, just now for a purpose. Ryuu couldn't care less about the death penalty, but as long as the criminals lives were being wasted, they might as well be put to a good use.
