Gaia was mentioned on GMA? Go to post 192 Gaia Community Discussion Tue Dec 08, 2009 12:48 am

Mind you, my parents were very involved with my life, but I still did a lot of bad stuff when I was 12. It seemed rebellious and fun back then. My parents gave me all the warnings and then let me do my own choices. I realized very quickly that cybering and whatnot was only fun if it pissed off your parents, and it didn't.

Completely protecting your kids with censoring and constantly guarding over them doesn't really help in the end. Sometimes you need to let them discover the world and then let them decide. Most of the times they'll do what's right.

Different people, different experiences. I never, ever felt the temptation to have cyber-sex or purposely anger my parents. But then again, that's me, that's my life, and I am the product of my environment and of my upbringing.

No one is suggesting complete censorship; children do need to learn about the realities of life because they, when they become adults, will have to face those problems and potentially work to fix them. However, the strong and functional foundation that is my home and the healthy presence of my parents in my life and daily activities have taught me well and have given me what I need to face those harsh realities. That is what I'm referring to: the healthy presence of parents in the upbringing in the lives of the children they created. If more parents were a bit more engaged in the raising of their children instead of depending on TV or the internet to do it for them, maybe there would be less articles like this one.

@ Anti-Ling: I tend to stick to more traditional family values; I was raised in a conservative, Roman Catholic household, and I was always taught that families should share their experiences and feelings openly. My parents know and are cool with what I do on Gaia; because of this, they have no reason to deny me their trust. We communicate openly about my internet activity (among many other things), and thus I don't feel any need or desire to engage in ... well ... what we see in Gaia Towns. xD I truly do think that the root of the problem is parenting these days (or the lack thereof).

If parents were more proactive in their children's' lives beyond the occasional punishment or whatever then less kids would fall prey to predators.

This.
Call me "conservative" or "uptight" or whatever, but I think that if parents actually took the time to talk to their kids about real life, maybe we'd have less twelve-year-old children engaging in acts here on Gaia that they should not be engaging in. Maybe they'd realize how dangerous and degrading it is to be so irresponsible and unwise.

I think that the gesture is sweeter than the gift itself. I received a small bouquet anonymously with a sweet message a few days ago, and it meant a lot to me that someone chose me to give something to - even if the gift itself was not worth that much in gold, it was worth much more in meaning.

The fact people say that making a mil is so easy makes me feel very poor. Or that they make 80k a day makes me feel worse. I just post for gold so its slow earning for me so I'm not worth much.

This pretty much summarizes the story of my life. I'm worth about 3 million, even though I've been here since 2005; then again, I don't invest in a great aquarium, evolving items, or monthly collectibles; I only buy the ones I really, really like and have enough funds for. I'm wealthy enough to have a beautiful assortment of clothes to wear all throughout the year, and I'm wealthy enough to donate to my friends and to strangers and occasionally host a contest or game; that's good enough for me. ^__^

I've been a member of Gaia since I was 16 years old and I have -never- spent my parent's money on Gaia cash.

I'm with you there. I'm seventeen, and every time I've spent money on Gaia Cash, it's been with gift cards I've received from my friends on my birthday or with the money I've earned by winning poetry contests or babysitting my neighbors' kids. I have never spent a cent on Gaia that did not come out of my own effort and hard work.

I would actually say GD, mostly because it takes some maturity for CB to at least know and admit their place. GD is basically just CB in denial.

This.

I don't really have a problem with people who enjoy the Chatterbox; even though pretty much anything goes in that forum, at least the people who go there know that and realize that it needs to stay confined within that forum.
