The issue here isn't about tobacco--it's about censorship. The ban on cigarettes in public places is a completely different topic. This is the internet, where there should be no censorship. By taking out their tobacco items, Gaia is setting a dangerous precedent.
There is also the reason of WHY they have removed the items. They have not given us a real reason and that alone concerns me. This is a PG-13 site and the TOS clearly states Gaia takes no responsibility for the affects its material has on you (meaning parents can't sue if something on Gaia upsets them). There is no legal reason behind this and, from what I've heard from other users, some of the staff are even protesting this ban. That leads me to believe that there's some dirty dealings going on in this.

There's a lot more at stake than just whether or not avatars should be able to smoke and if you can't see that, you're not looking at the big picture.
I would also like to point out that some of the "sexy" items are in fact hideous, IMO, and it is merely your opinion that the cigarettes look bad. I personally like them (and for the record, I am not a smoker. Never have been, never will be. I hate those things).

I have seen and lived around people who smoke my entire life and have never had the desire to do so myself. Just because people see it does not mean they will try it. =w= Especially if it's a bunch of pixels on website.
Is my avatar going to make people run out and buy weapons and enslave women? I doubt it. This is a PG-13 site and smoking is not against that age rating.
This ban is stupid and it pains me that the internet is being censored. I mean...that's my real issue here--that Gaia has the balls to step in and say what is and is not okay. You're not even supposed to be on the damned site if you're under thirteen. No one follows that, but Gaia should be operating as if they will (because otherwise, why have it?) and that means allowing things like skanky women and cigarettes and crap. If a PG-13 movie can have it, why can't a website?

I wonder if Gaia is prepared for the backlash this is going to cause.
My avatar alone proves that there are much worse things on this site than tobacco products. ;P And I do so love them all.

Oh , yes, cigarettes are horrible and must definitely be removed! As should the half-naked woman standing beside my avatar (who appears to be possessed). And the little imp EI! It promotes naughty behavior! And down with those awful guns! These pixels are corrupting our children and teaching them terrible things!

Seriously, though--this whole thing is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever seen. Even with Gaia going downhill and becoming overflowing with commercialism, I've shrugged and said, "I can forgive." But PG-13 movies have smoking, so why can't a PG-13 site?
And I find it hilarious that in the comic you have with Lanzer smoking, it also features a gun, and he is clearly quite drunk. XD Gaia has never censored itself before (the ability to pose Alruna's rose in such a way that it makes it look like you're fingering her is proof of that) and this is just…ugh.
AnaLexie is so right. And on the note of a gay NPC...Why can't we have a lesbian NPC? ;^; Gay men get all the attention...
And I'd also like to bring up Liam and...oh, what's her face? The hairstylist. Liam promotes sexist behaviour while the hairstylist promotes promiscuity. And then there's Timmy who...is just wrong. XD In so many ways.

If Gaia's going to go down this road, they'll have to pretty much take everything down.
