comfortably_dumb o Hitsugaya o comfortably_dumb o Hitsugaya o All Horcruxes are active because they contain living souls. The Horcrux is used as a container to keep a soul in because a soul needs to occupy something in order to survive. That's why Voldemort had to possess bodies to live until he finally received his own.
The Horcruxes do not need to be "used" to help the person continue living. The other Horcruxes were basically left alone without anyone using them, but they still keep Voldemort alive.
The item contains the soul unless it's destroyed so until the Horcrux is destroyed or a person wants to put his soul back together. Ginny used the diary but it was still a Horcrux because Voldemort's soul still resided within it.
Okay, so what you're saying is; for Voldemort to continue living, he didn't actually have to use up one of his Horcruxes? That they are basically unaffected, but because he has them, his soul continues to live even though his body is destroyed? And since he was reborn with a new body, his Horcruxes weren't affected?
I know that the book says that they were not affected, but to me, it seems like if he was to die and he was destroyed, then he would have to rely on a Horcrux to stay alive. It would seem that he would have to activate the Horcrux to continue living and that the item that the soul was inside would just... be a regular item again since the soul is being used.
I guess I always looked as Horcruxes as being placeholders, and needed only when one has died but still wishes to be immortal. And I guess I didn't see them as always existing, but when one needs a soul inside of the Horcrux, then the Horcrux no longer exists once the soul is used.
Perhaps I need to re-read. >w>
Yea, if his body is destroyed, his soul continues to live because of the Horcruxes he created over time. His physical body is gone but the pieces of his soul thrive. And yea, when he got a new body, it doesn't affect his Horcruxes. The pieces of his soul are bound to their containers, so regardless of him finding a new body, they remain intact in where they reside.
He does rely on the Horcruxes to stay alive in the sense of being immortal, but he relied on them even while alive because they ensured that he would never be mortal. As long as the Horcruxes continued to exist, he was immortal.Okay cool. Thanks! biggrin
You're welcome! biggrin

comfortably_dumb o Hitsugaya o I don't get what you mean by having on less Horcrux because even if one is being used (like the diary). It doesn't mean there are less Horcruxes to that person. There's only one less Horcrux if that Horcrux or another is destroyed.
Well, I know this isn't necessarily in the book (that I can remember) which is why I was confused. But, it would seem that if a person has one Horcrux, and they want to continue living, then they take up residence in their Horcrux. It would seem, then, that since that Horcrux is being "used" for the person to continue living, that the item no longer possesses the soul (since it is being used) and therefore isn't a Horcrux?

Christian856 o Hitsugaya o comfortably_dumb I am also confused as to what happens when you die, and you have a Horcrux and decide that you want to be immortal. Wouldn't you use the soul inside of one of your Horcruxes to continue living? Well, wouldn't that mean that you have one less Horcrux than you had before? I know that didn't happen in the book; Voldemort continued living, but still had all of his Horcruxes until they were all destroyed.
Creating a Horcrux makes you immortal. You've split your soul into an object, which thus becomes the container (body) for the soul to survive in, which means even if your physical body is destroyed, your soul continues to thrive.
So killing Voldemort would have been pointless without destroying his Horcruxes because he was immortal. Pieces of his soul are still lying around, which can possess other people if contact is too close with the object (like Ginny and Tom Riddle's diary) on say an emotional level. Even if Voldemort's physical body is dead, his many souls live on. This means Voldemort could continue his work by using other people.
Voldemort made Harry a Horcrux by trying to kill him, and as someone mentioned already, the curse rebounded because of Lily's protection, splitting Voldemort's soul involuntarily and placing his again split soul into Harry.
I don't get what you mean by having on less Horcrux because even if one is being used (like the diary). It doesn't mean there are less Horcruxes to that person. There's only one less Horcrux if that Horcrux or another is destroyed.
Actually there is another way to have on less horcrux.
One: Destroying like you said
Two:The soul within a Horcrux returing to the oringal Soul. But you have to show remorse. But Remorse can kill a person who goes far beyond evil.
Yea, it's supposed to be real painful and no one really survives it, plus Voldemort's never shown remorse...too evil.
