Who/what was your biggest inspiration? Go to post 29 Art Discussion Wed Nov 18, 2009 7:29 am
This is a pretty cliche answer,
but Clamp was probably the biggest reason
I started to take art seriously, as something more than a hobbie.
Card Captor Sakura was pretty much one of the first
mangas I ever read, and I was blown away by their work.
How they started out doing doujinshi and then worked their way up?
Pretty inspiring to a twelve year old girl who loved to draw
but hated everything she created. They made me want to improve.

It was kind of an eye-opener for me too.
Like a "WOW! Art can be that cool and fun and exciting?!
Sign me up that-!" type of deal. c:

Ah, okay.
I still think it'd look better if you didn't blend with your finger, even for the hair.

My reasoning-
When you use your finger to blend, you get a very silky effect.
When I use charcoal, for example, I blend a little bit with my fingers
on say, fabrics, or like in a recent still life, for a silky top hat.
Hair is silky, yes, but it is made up of hundred and hundreds of strands.
Individual pencils marks can bring these strands out
and make more identifiable as hair, not just some flowing surface.

Here's some really awesome tutorials for good hair:

You should definitely check out this artist's gallery,
there are some amazing examples of detailed portraits.
(Plus, fan art of some of my favorite actors. Eye Candy,
always a plus~)

I'm terrible at hands. Really. Horrid.
But the one thing I do know is- the proportions of the hand.
Put your hand over your face.
It's almost long enough to to reach from chin to the top of the forehead,
(from the bottom of the palm to the tip of the middle finger)
but not wide enough to completely cover the face.
Most people's hands are like that, with the except of people with unusually giant or tiny hands.
I think this is really important to remember, for whatever reason,
lots of people tend to draw the hands super super large.

tl;dr- If the hands are bigger than the face/head, they are probably TOO LARGE.
Unless you're trying to show depth/distance between a hand that is
more foward than the rest of the body, but that gets complicated. xD
Stick to simpler things for now.

Don't blend with your fingers?
It looks to me like that is what you do.
I don't really think that's a good technique for pencils,
charcoal yes, normal pencils? no.
I think you could improve by blending and shading
with the pencils themselves. It takes longer,
but using your finger can kind be like... an easy way out.
Using the side of the pencil for large areas, not your finger.
Plus, the oils from your skin can actually make blending more difficult.

If you aren't blending with your fingers,
then I'm sorry, my eye sight sucks.

Another tip- darken your darks A LOT.
That will make the lights pop out so much more. c:

Count me in on this Misha-Cloning Experiment.
We need at least three. Then we can have them prove
that he really can play all three characters.
I contribute my mad-computer-nerd genes to the project!
Both my parents work with them in some form,
so maybe I have a bit of that running deep deep deep deep down.
Also, maybe one of the clones can help me with my college applications...?

This week's episode will be the last I see as a child-!
BY JANUARY, I WILL BE... AN ADULT.
Wow. That's frightening.

Two months though. D:
Bleck. How did I go three and a half years not watching?
Sometimes I forget I only got into it this past July.
Oh well. Re-runs will have to tide me through,
maybe I'll take up a new hobbie. Or learn how to drive safely!
Actually get my license! (I really procrastinated with this one...)
....Knitting? Knife throwing? Something.

Shaking hands, eh?
No worries, I have the same exact problem,
especially when I'm trying to draw.
I suggest using finer pointed pens for doing line work,
and doing quick strokes, keeping your wrist loose.
Sharpies are the worst, I think, try microns.
(They are my loves~ their 005 tip is godly)
When you absolutely must go slow,
either grip your wrist with your other hand,
or uses rulers (you can get ones for curves, circles, etc.)
And practice practice practice. c:

Have you ever considered different techniques for shading?
You seem to use a lot of cross hatching and such.
I think fully developing the tones in your pieces might
improve them a lot. It takes much more time, but it's worth it. c:

After this week's episode. D:
(right? I think.)

And as for buying wincest art~
I can't give you a specific shop,
but I suggest just scanning the
Art Shops and Requests Forum for artists who are willing to do
both shonen-ai/yaoi and fanart. c:
You probably want to have a lot of funds available though,
some of those artists charge a whole heck of a lot.
