"If you're looking for survivors, you won't find any down there..." someone announced.

Christabelle and Mrs. Baylee were still standing halfway up the hill, nowhere near the ditch. They walked down towards Reed and Mr. Coltaire. Mrs. Baylee looked at her car, and as she stood on the edge of the ditch, she kicked it. The Honda made an awful noise as it sank further into the mud. "Well," the woman said unperturbed (now that she was done reciting every English curse under the moon) "Looks like a job for AAA."

Christa shifted from foot to foot anxiously. Of all the people to witness this car crash, Reed and Mr. Coltaire? Well, flipancy was the key to a smooth recovery. She flashed a charming teacher's-pet smile at the guidance counselor. "A minor setback, Mr. Coltaire. Nothing could possibly stop me from answering your phone while you gobble down old Chinese takeout before rushing to a meeting at 2:15 in the afternoon." She recited what she knew from last year to be his nigh-invariable Thursday schedule.

((I feel compelled to do this. Don't ask.))

Meanwhile:

"Nngh... Can't we just sit in the car and wait?" Christabelle half-asked, half-whined to her mother, who was currently looking underneath the hood at the car's engine. The Baylee vehicle was really nothing more than a milk carton on wheels. The old Honda was a cheap, light, and efficient car - at least it was ten years ago. Now it was worthless, creaked, burned oil, and had stalled out going up a hill.

Mrs. Baylee was thankful to God that the parking brake still worked, so the car wasn't going to roll down the hill anytime soon. But she saw something that compounded the problem. The car battery was leaky apparently, and corrosion had destroyed the terminals. Even if a good samaritan offered to jump start the Honda, the battery would have to be replaced anyways. Mrs. Baylee bit her lip. It must be time to buy a new car, but could she afford one?

As if to answer her question, Christabelle jumped aside as even the parking brake finally gave out, and they watched the Honda slide backwards down the gentle hill, before rolling off the shoulder and tumbling into a wide ditch with a loud crash.

Christabelle learned many new and colorful words that evening.

Grussgot blinked rapidly. He could have sworn something on the roofs of the building across the river. Someone traveling... with a torch? Groaning, Grussgot closed the shades and drew the curtains, ready to go to bed for the 4 hours before it was time to prepare for Mass the next morning. He picked up his precious rosary and gently rubbed the miniature crucifix. Out side, sirens began to wail. Now why is it, Johan thought to himself, that with all the good in the world, people still get hurt and sick? He muttered his late wife's name several times as he climbed back into bed, never noticing that a faint but distinct aura had cloaked his apartment, pulsing with the same tempo of his music.
