Contests! Shojo Beat's 'Beat Girl' Contest + Gaia Film Fest! Go to post 0 Featured Announcements Thu Jun 14, 2007 10:37 pm
Since Gaians are the most inventive and talented group of people in the history of the world, we're bringing you TWO ways to show off your skills: Shojo Beat's Design a 'Beat Girl' Contest and our very own Gaia Film Festival.

Shojo Beat's Design a 'Beat Girl' Contest!

Shojo Beat wants you to Design a Beat Girl and not only get published, but win oodles of Gaia Gold and Copic art supplies!

Shojo Beat magazine is looking to readers to design their adorable spokesperson, Beat Girl. Starting in the January 2007 issue, Shojo Beat has featured a different artist's portrayal of this fun, manga-loving representation of the SB reader. Now Shojo Beat wants you to try your hand at designing a Beat Girl!

There are 2 ways to win:
  • SB Staff Award - Shojo Beat will choose one grand prize artist
to have their work featured in the December 2007 issue, plus win
100,000 Gaia Gold and an amazing Copic Art set!

  • Readers Choice Award - The best out of 10 SB staff-selected
runners up will be determined by readers via an online vote. The
winner will receive 50,000 Gaia Gold and a Copic Art set!

Pick up the July issue and look for the contest info on page 306, plus, examples of past Beat Girls in every issue. For more information, check out the Shojo Beat Contest Page.

We encourage you to post your art for all to see in our special Contest Forum, but to officially enter the Design a Beat Girl contest, you must enter through Shojo Beat as per the rules and regulations online.

The contest ends August 27th - so get drawing, and remember to check back and vote for your favorite!

Be a Star in the Gaia Online Film Festival!

The Gaia Film Festival is coming up, and we want YOU to be the star. Our Film Contest lets you be the auteur of your very own film, whether it's a brilliant work of art or a bizarre work of oddness!

While most contests get all snooty about stuff like "quality" and "artistry," we just want to be entertained. We want you to make a movie that represents your own style, whether you're a serious dramatist or a complete weirdo. Therefore, we will let you choose between two categories: if you've worked and slaved for countless hours to make a masterpiece of cinematic expression, enter in the "My Movie is Awesome!" category. If you'd rather flaunt your lack of talent, you can enter in the "My Movie Sucks" category.

This could be your chance for big-screen fame: we'll be picking the best films from each category and showing them in the Gaia Cinemas.

Visit our Film Contest Page to find out how you can become a Gaian celebrity to rival the legendary Ron Bruise!

Make sure you read the rules closely, because we have a few requirements for film format and content. Beyond those, you can go nuts! You're limited only by your creativity (and by time).

Submissions close on June 30th, so get your entries in quick!

Fixes and Changes to the Profile System Go to post 0 Featured Announcements Thu Jun 07, 2007 12:14 am
As we mentioned earlier today, we've been rewriting our profile system to be much more stable and compatible. We've also added some new features and changed some things that may affect your profile, so please take a quick gander at this list of tweaks:

The following changes are for newer (version 2) profiles only:

  • Adding custom CSS stuff to your profile, and messing with the style of your Comments and Friends, has been moved to the new Profile Theme page in your account settings.

  • We've added a "Recent Visitors" panel, which will show the usernames of people who have checked out your profile recently. Don't worry; people won't know that you were checking out their profile unless you want them to. You'll remain hidden from view unless you change the "Recent Visitors" option in your Profile Preferences panel to "Show."

  • Big Change: There is now a "Save" button! You've gotta press it, or your profile changes won't be saved!

These changes will affect all profiles, both old and new:

  • You can now choose whether or not you want to display the following info: Last login, registration date, gender, location, birthday, occupation and website. You can mess with these options in the Profile Preferences panel.

  • You can change whether your profile is "public" or "private" (if it's private, only your friends can view it). Hit up the Profile Preferences panel to change this.

  • If you want to embed YouTube videos in your media section, you just have to grab the movie's URL (i.e. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VaB7BQ6PlHs) and plug it in, and it will automatically be changed to the proper embedding code.

  • Another Big Change: You can now access your profile by putting your username in the URL (i.e. http://www.gaiaonline.com/profiles/Your_Username_Here or http://www.gaiaonline.com/p/Your_Username_Here).

A final word of caution: Although we've worked very hard to make everybody's profiles work properly with these new changes, there may be a few people whose profiles broken in one place or another. You may have to make some tweaks to your profile to make it look right again, especially if you're using custom code.
New moderator and staff colors are launching today Go to post 1 Featured Announcements Fri Jul 20, 2007 1:13 am
Hi again!

Due to the hugeness of Gaia's infrastructure, changing something so basic as how usernames are displayed is actually a lot more complicated than it sounds. Hundreds of files have to be modified, and a number of glitches have popped up due to our recent tweaks to the system.

You may experience some weirdness for a little while. Forums and posts might not show up properly, for example, or you might get strange error messages. If you're noticing some big error that's never happened before, chances are it's because of the recent username update.

We're aware of the problems, and we're currently working hard to fix up all the little things that were broken by the update. Please bear with us while we tinker; things should be back to normal soon.

Thanks!

New moderator and staff colors are launching today Go to post 1 Featured Announcements Thu Jul 19, 2007 8:11 pm
Hello, Gaians!

We recently announced that we'd be making significant changes to simplify the username colors of Gaia moderators, administrators and staff members. We're pleased to announce that these changes will be taking effect today!

To quickly recap: all moderators will now have green names, administrators will have orange names and site staff members will have dark brown names. These people will all have titles that appear under their username to tell you their role on the site.

As usual, regular members will have black usernames and people on your friends list will have blue names. Gaia NPC accounts used by the staff will have red names.

The full details of the new mod colors and titles can be found on any of the "View Forum Moderators" links that appear at the top of each forum. We've included a sample "View Forum Moderators" page below to give you a crash course on staff colors, titles and duties:

Quote:
Below is a list of moderators for (this forum). These are the chosen individuals on Gaia who are able to help solve problems, move threads, and handle Terms of Service issues. If you see a thread or post that may be a violation of the Terms of Service, please use the or button located in all threads.

For other forum related issues, you can always contact the following moderators. On Gaia Online, ONLY members with Orange or Green colored usernames are official administrators or moderators. Remember, if their name is in blue or black, they are NOT an official of Gaia!

The following moderators are assigned to this forum:

(In each forum's "View Forum Moderators page," this area will contain a clickable list of that forum's moderators which will allow you to see a moderator's title and whether they're currently online.)

Administrators – Leaders of the Community and Moderator teams. They are responsible primarily for high-level administrative tasks, billing issues, and overseeing Gaia moderation staff.

Moderators: There are 3 types of moderators and a group of assistants to help you on Gaia; they represent the Site Assistance Group, the Global Group, and the Account Specialists Group. They are explained below.

NOTE: All moderators on Gaia are all the green color you see above and below. All officials at Gaia will also have a specific title under their username specifying their role on Gaia. Anyone without a title underneath their username is NOT an official of Gaia in any way!

Omni Moderators – Responsible primarily for account issues, hacking and scamming cases, as well as special projects related to account security, site safety and moderator training.

Global Moderators - Responsible for Abuse and Harassment cases, as well as help oversee Terms of Service violations across the entire site. Global Moderators may have other special functions that are specific to a particular role.

Site Moderators - Responsible for specific forums on the site, as listed above, handle Terms of Service Violations and thread move requests. These moderators also cover Gaia games, chat rooms, towns, and other features of Gaia.

Moderator Assistants (formerly “Helpers”) - Responsible for thread moves only in specific forums they are assigned to. Moderator Assistants DO NOT assist users with Terms of Service violations.

Non-Player Characters – A Non-Player Character (example: [NPC] Rina) is an account that is used on Gaia to speak to the public about important and fun topics (like quests and newsletters). Any persons posting with these accounts are Gaia staff but will not be helping you with Terms of Service violations – please contact Gaia Moderators and Administrators for assistance.

Artists, Developers and other staff – There are many other people who work hard to make Gaia awesome by creating new features and new art, items and much more for you every day! These people have brown names and may post around the site but will not be able to help with Terms of Service violations – please contact Gaia Moderators and Administrators for assistance.

Thanks for reading! We hope this makes things a little clearer.

Three new forums! Go to post 0 Featured Announcements Tue Jun 26, 2007 11:50 pm
Hey Gaians,

We've heard quite a few requests for new forums to discuss a few different aspects of Gaia life, and we're always happy to oblige. We're adding three new forums today:

Official Gaia Contests - Gaia is planning to run contests much more regularly in the future, so it's only natural that people would want to talk about them. The Film Festival Contest is going on right now, so be sure to stop by and say your piece. This forum will be in the "Gaia Community" section of the main forum index.

Gaia Convention Tour - You can visit our new convention forum to talk about the Gaia Convention Tour and Kiki's Road Trip. This forum isn't new, but it's in a new place-- we've put it in the "Gaia Community" section of the main forum page, so you'll be able to find it more easily.

Gaia Merchandise - Here's a place where you can discuss and show off your GStore/QOOP merchandise, or request new stuff for us to make. Want some Gambino candlesticks or Ron Bruise lobster bibs? Request 'em here. This is a subforum of the "Fashion & Style" subforum of General Discussion.

Enjoy! And remember: just because they're new doesn't mean you should spam 'em up. Post responsibly!
Important -- New Staff Coloring! Go to post 0 Featured Announcements Sat Jun 16, 2007 9:39 pm
Hey, guys! We wanted to give you some advance notice about a couple of important changes that you'll be seeing on Gaia very soon.

For a while now, we've wanted to simplify how username colors of Gaia staff and Moderators appear around the site. We're about to make things way easier to understand:

In brief, there are going to be 2 main colors for people that are here to help; Green for Moderators and Orange for Administrators.
Green - For all Gaia's Moderators. In addition, there will be a text title under their usernames that better explains what their role is and how they can help you. If you need help, people in green are the ones who can help you.

Orange - For Administrators. These are the ones who manage the forums and lead the moderation and member services teams.

You may also see these other colors on usernames:

Dark Brown - For names will be given to those who do art, coding, and other fun stuff for you. These are the people that talk about features and development.

Black - For all other members on Gaia. So if a black username tells you they are a moderator or admin, they aren't smile

Members on your friends list will still be in Dark blue, and NPCs will continue to remain Red.

As you may know, there are currently several different username colors given to our staff based on what they do to support you, and that can be really confusing. We believe this new way of identifying Moderators and Adminsitrators will make it even easier for you to find who you need to assist you with anything on Gaia.

Green Moderators will still be your first line of support for all of your community needs. And Orange Administrators will continue being the official voice of Gaia as well as leaders of the community team.

Gaia's support team is growing really fast! That's why we want to make things more clear and simple.
We're already improving on our response time, and this color change is another effort in making things better. You should expect to see both the green moderators and orange admins engaging the community more than ever before.

We'll let you know when this takes effect, so stay tuned!
