The Goldfish Goddess What Happened To LSD Miss goldfish, how do you know so much about these little guys? Any inspiration as to why?
I breed and show them. Well, the single tailed non deformed ones anyway. Our family always has. My great great grandma was Chinese, and when she moved here, she bought goldfish. All mine are descendents from hers. Some are older than me! my 26 year old (who is 10 years older than me) won supreme exhibit at our local fish show... Thats out of every species their!
I also have in the past breed guppies, fighting fish, gouramis, killifish and others. But goldies are my fave biggrin
BTW, i think I messed up in my Gallon to Litre conversion up their. a gallon = 4 L roughly. Gimme a mo to fix it.
Edit - I like your name. Better add me to that list rolleyes
That's pretty cool, what you do. I've never heard of competitive goldfish shows and breeding. I never thought it would be something that would be that popular or important. But it sounds really neat.

Enter The Glade
This is an essay question I am answering at the moment (and it's due tonight crying ) and I am interested on what the views of the Politics forum are on this subject. We are supposed to reference utilitarianism in our answer, unfortunatly I am totally ignorant about politics really, so I thought by posting here I'd get an idea of other peoples ideas are.
It's in a government's best interest to keep it's citizens happy, lest there be some rebellion or uprising (wait that's the same thing...). Anyway, it's not their personal responsibility to make sure every citizen is happy, though. I think they tend to prefer keeping a majority of people satisfied, rather than the total sum.

The Goldfish Goddess Cat Wears A Hat Damn that's a big fish. O_O But I'm fairly sure that the photo of the teenager posed as if he should be holding a large mouth bass (instead of a gold fish) is Photoshopped. wink And I'm highly doubtful that a gold fish can live for 15 years when all the ones I've had only lived at max a year, and those were rare occasions.
A couple of questions...
What did you keep your fish in?
Fancies belong inside in a huge aquarium, normal ones do better outside In large ponds. A bowl will kill your fish. It can't get enough oxygen and chokes in its own waste.
Do you know its breeding?
Did it's parents have any genetic faults?
How long did they live?
How old were they when they spawned your fish?
Where did you buy/acquire it?
This can pinpoint genetic problems. Young spawners have a high morality. Always but your fish from a breeder, or a VERY good and trusted pet shop. The quality of the breeding of the animal ensures its on going health.
What is the chemical composition of your local water/the water you used?
Very important to know. If your water is unsutiable, you will have to resort to boiling it. Test this before you acquire your next fish.
Do you de chlorinate your water?
Simple. You don't de chlorinate, your fish die from chlorine and chloramine poisoning.
Do you boil your water?
Removes diseases and nasties from your water.
What were the ammonia, nitrate and nitrite levels?
Test this monthly at least. They climb quickly and kill even quicker!
And, no. Goldfish get BIGGER than that. I have a 26 year old shubunkin who is around 26 cm, and that's SMALL for his age, and he's 10 years older than me! I have older and larger ones too. They used to belong to my aunt. Pic's tomorrow, its 1-40 am and I wont be able to photograph them in the pond in the dark. Only the babies and the adopted fancy live inside.
Um they were just pet shop fish in a gallon tank with a filter and circulating dechlorinated water. O_o

Sir Othello So...I was reading my library's October 08 copy of Rolling Stones, and I saw an interview with Obame.
In the article, he said he was going to give $4,000 college tuition credit yearly to everyone who completed 100 hours of community service a year.
I actually was backing McCain, so after I read this snippet, I was very suprised. I'm applying to colleges this year, and my first choices are insanely pricey, so I was pretty psyched about this news. Then, I got to thinking...where's he pulling this money from? I thought our debt was through the roof; how could he afford this? My only answer is that he's going to raise taxes, which would be somewhat counter-productive (rather than having student debt, we'd just have debt debt...).
So, ED, what do you think? How's Obama going to back this? Will he go through with it at all...?
Heh no s**t. I'm wondering that myself with most of his plans.
The fact is, he'll take money from somewhere else to put it towards something like the college tuition credit thing. Printing more money will cause inflation, and we all know that's a bad thing. How will he get the money? Taxes. Big taxes and little taxes, as far as the eye can see.

kyoukimi No, this isn't a 'I hate all religion' thread, I'm saying this in all seriousness, and I hope to get good answers..
I'm just wondering how Christians ignore the proof thats given against their religion, and continue to believe in it. What do you think about the evidence? By evidence, I mean bones of pre-humans, evolution, that fun stuff.
And where do dinosaurs come into the picture..? (not kidding, just curious)
And really, I'm wondering the same thing about all religions. What about the physical evidence against what you believe in?
Because proof isn't necessary in order to believe in something.
Fundamentalists (meaning that particular group of Christians) are the ones who disregard the evidence of evolution, hun, so cut out the generalizations, 'kay?

Logic and Proportion Whenever someone's beliefs are pointed out to be patently absurd, the ones holding those beliefs just get angry. Very few people change their stance. I cannot understand this. If you hold a belief, and ideology, that is based on fairy tales why wouldn't you want to change it? Why wouldn't you want to better yourself?
We'll use this thread as an example. Go to page 4 for my reply and the response it did not deserve. These people - if they can really be called that - became outraged when I pointed out their absurd beliefs.
It's no secret that petty superstition and absurd ideologies represent a backwards step in human social evolution. They are responsible for some of the world's most bloody, most horrific acts of hatred and violence. Yet when people are told - rightly so - that their beliefs are insane and dangerous, they refuse to acknowledge the truth and in fact harder than ever against that truth.
So, the question I put forward is why. Why do people hate rational thought? Why can't people be reasonable?
Maybe they hate your intolerance of their beliefs, rather than your so-called rationality. It's one thing to say "What you believe in is crazy and make believe." but it's another thing to say "While I don't understand why you believe what you believe, and dislike it, I still respect your right to believe in what you choose." I think the problem is the lack of respect in the equation on your part.

Kylesan90 Many people dislike or hate gays. But why question
Discuss the reasons why you hate gays.
(However, just don't say, 'its a sin against god'. If you are going to, explain WHY its a sin against god.)
Because people fear what they do not understand, and fear leads to hate? I dunno... I just dislike the ones that gloat over their gayness.

DaiShutao Gaia is, as are all gatherings of teens, college students and creepy old guys, rife with talk of the arguing point of our age: The (Non)existence of God. Personally, I am an atheist, and believe me when I say I've taken my fair share of shots at the God question. In fact, I personally believe that religious people will be the end of this Earth. But that's not the subject here.
The deal here is that the argument you all so love to push until you're blue in the face is, to be blunt, nigh-on mathematically impossible to win, and furthermore, not even an argument in the first place, let alone a debate. And that is because there is zero common ground to be fought for. Presence or absence of a God isn't just a single factor. It changes, quite literally, EVERYTHING, from the point of view of the believer/nonbeliever. It is not an argument, because there is no point to win, and it is not a debate because there is nothing to be gained by it. There is no way for either side to win, because if you've got enough certainty in your beliefs that you feel the need to debate them, then you're already damn near impossible to move. Switching from one side to the other is generally effected by outside influences in someone's life, rather than debate. That right there is where the NIGH-ON impossible part comes in: Perhaps if something either insanely terrible or very very good happened to your opponent during the conversation, you MIGHT be able to win. But it generally must be tipped off by personal introspection.
The bottom line? You're all just screaming at each other and flinging your poo like goddamned apes. Debate the implications of Ethics. Debate over the best toppings for a ham sandwich. Debate over how much of a whore your mom is. But don't debate the existence of God. It's a conversation you can have silently, by yourself, in your head. The outcome will be the same.
This sounds more like a rant than a discussion. =/
