The Undead Suitor
But you still can if you want to.

Setting up a temporary road block to point you to the first quests (especially during the first few hours of playing when everyones lost and consfused)

Is different than raping you if you take a left instead of a right. xp

The current training teaches you how to use the minimap and quest journal, then it gives you one quest. To talk to Elizabeth. If you decide to go wander off and do other stuff, enjoy! wink There will still be that one quest in your journal and the minimap flag pointing to Elizabeth.

It's cool if you want to wander. Check out what the rest of the world looks like, get dazed, etc. I think Zen Garden is pretty sweet and would like people to see it earlier.

Is there ever going to be a system implemented to prevent lower CL players from getting into areas they don't belong? Like if a 2.0 happens to get to Gold Beach? If not, I have an idea how to do this. Noobshark.

Noobshark would be triggered by a certain amount of people with a too low CL. Once it begins attacking, it'd start with the lowest CL available and work it's way up. It could look like a person who has a fake shark head and fin on or something, and when it attacks you it could say LOLOLOL!1!1!11!

Oh, and could Bassie start attacking us like the Landshark? Or could we get a quest where we have to find proof of Bassie's existence for the guard that talks about her? That'd be epic.

....Why? Is it really hurting the game to let people explore areas before they're 'ready'?

What if it was a lower level user tagging along with a high-level user for fun?

Honestly, restricting free movement in the game would ruin the only 'exploration' part of the game. (Because you wont know if your tough enough until you see for yourself. And how would you know if you instantly get killed? )

We do restrict movement. The Barton guard won't let you into ZenGardens or Bassken unless you're a decent level for those areas. However, if you take a long walk and maybe an escort, you can get into those areas.

How would I do that? I'm not a computer geek so make it understandable if you could. What do we have to do to make our "cache more content"?

We're designing the game so that you don't have to. Actions like clearing your cache can make you download everything again, so it's best to avoid that sort of thing.

I was wondering if you guys would ever hold a contest for gaians to draw/create a mini-boss (or new animated) for zOMG *and then everyone votes on it and all that fun stuff*?

I don't think we've ever done that! Well, other than the 104 monster. wink You should present the idea to Qixter and see what he says. Even if he says no, it'd be fun to have a thread about it in the forum somewhere. I really enjoy seeing what you guys come up with.

JustBiMe
Who is in charge of writing, the storyline, plot, for zOMG. I do love that creative brain power.

That is Qixter and Bronstahd.

JustBiMe
Next Chapter ideas:

Defeat of the Lag...dum dum dum (XD through the power of writing eh)

Oh, ouch. :p yes... we know..

MHHornfreak
I'd also love to know about the zOMG soundtrack
They're quite good and i'd like to know if it's available for purchase or download.
Also i'd like to know who the composer is.
I'm a musician myself and have been wondering for quite some time.

Thanks!

Through the music player in the game you get referenced to http://www.directsong.com/ and if you follow some threads and what not, you'll figure out that the composer is Jeremy Soule: http://www.jeremysoule.com/

I think someone may have addressed the purchase question somewhere in this thread already.

Defeating the lag means getting servers that are actually meant to host the game and the sheer number of players.

Really, many people talk about lag, but they mean different things. The first step is to figure out what they mean when they say lag and that is usually the hardest part. wink Some people mean bad framerate, others mean that it takes time to load the game, while others are referring to the round trip time to the server, etc. and so on.

SirHacksAlot
OF course, this should also mean not loading up to 20 different sites for music, interfaces, and the like, this is how you destroy your servers and the game, massive lag, the lag increases, player number increases, server load reaches peak, server crashes until rebooted, problem starts over again.

Keep the entire DB on one server, and all the music and everything else on a second, lag issue resolved right there.

The servers are bloody fast, I think you're referring to the n^12 definition of lag: "My bandwidth is choking on all the content I'm downloading while playing the game!".

If you can make your browser cache more content, your experience gets better as you play. You end up caching more of the downloadable files and not having to fetch them each time.

SirHacksAlot

For example to show how much crud is being loaded, JUST TO LOGIN:

Server:
6 emote .SWF files,
1 TrackingManager SWF
1 UI manager SWF
1 UI worldlist SWF
1 Worldbubble SWF
1 Loadscreen SWF
1 Battle SWF
(12)

It looks like you missed a bunch! Your browser must have had most of it in it's cache. Really, we do have many files, but on average, you're downloading less than 10MB to play in a zone.

SirHacksAlot
Cache / Load upon everytime playing/using certain areas (increases DLs (downloads) when it shouldnt if preloaded)
10 directsong AEM files, all different locations on the directsong domain
(still 10)

Its like telling one guy to hold 22 boxes, and keep distributing 10 boxes to the same person over and over, it is overwhelming for the server, not to mention when you use foreign file types you generally have a much BIGGER file size (AEM files)

About the AEM files. I was skeptical also, but if you try to make an MP3 with the same quality the MP3 file ends up being larger. I also did CPU tests for MP3 vs AEM and AEM won out. sry. wink

Cheers,
Halzy

*following the crowd* Yes, thank you all for working with this great website.

Question: Who came up with the musical tombstones?

I think that was bronstahd!

Sensual Soul
What besides the baseball do you guys do together? Do you have like a poker night or something?

Some of the people here at work do a poker night from time to time. It's not just the battle.. err zOMG team. Sometimes we hang out on the weekend, but not so much recently.

Kamdage
do you guys game online much ?(as in play games like call of duty /counter strike/tribes/half life/team fortress.....)if so do you play together ?and whats your favorite?

I really like L4D and TF2. Bronstahd is pretty much semi-pro at TF2. I tend to like L4D a bit more than TF2. Bron and I will team up in TF2, usually I'll be his medic and we'll wipe out the other team. smile

DanieBarton03
I was wondering if the soundtrack will ever be available for download to listen to.

Also, if there would ever be the possibility of sheet music for some of the songs. I would love to play "Village Greens" on the piano. It's so soothing. "Zen Gardens" is great, too.

This is waaaayyy beyond me. wink This would be a better question for Qixter. smile

maur_maur
I have a question for the devs! What was the inspiration behind eb? What made you chose what the big bad boss was?

The secret is feeding bad food to the artists and waiting for them to hallucinate. Then you lock them in their cubes and demand that they draw what they've seen. Usually works out for the best.

Mike aka GOD
After Durem is done, how much longer until Von Helson Manor and I'm guessing Halloweentown is somewhere towards the end of October?

:-X

Sensual Soul
How many of you guys from the dev team went to the prom thing?

I didn't yet. confused If I can get home at a reasonable time, I would.

[~Lam~]
:O Lambo has a question. What is that barn in Bill's Ranch for? Is there going to be anything special in the future with this barn? Or is it just to get that "Open the Barn Door" Badge? :O

And BUMP whee

I think that it just looks cool. smile If Qixter or Bronstahd use it for something, I think that's just bonus. wink

scullylam
is there really going to be a land shark ring? every time i log on to zomg, the new update section has the rings listed and one of them says "land shark." typo i think, but still if there was a land shark ring that would be awesome. would an air shark ring be created as well? and with air shark, the effect i imagine would be like pikachu. lightning bolts ftw. 3nodding

Oh -- it is just a typo. We deal with the monsters and rings so often it's easy to slip up and say land shark ring instead of shark ring. wink

Captain Madman-Gen Marks
I'm not sure of anyone asked this but I'll ask anyway ^^; :
Can you give us a hint as to what sort of rings sets await us in Chapter 2?

Everybody dies.. sry. wink No, we can't give hints.

Danyaela The Fallen
To any/all devs:
What was the longest work hour you guys have put in with developing the game?

Edit:
Just additional stuff. I'm sure there were sleepless nights and stuff, and there were lost and lost of coffee involved. Do you guys have like a particular brew or its just your run of the mill coffee?

Ok -- so as you go from being a Jr software engineer to a Sr engineer you learn some things. One of those things is: DONT CODE TIRED! You'll just waste your time, add more bugs, and have to spend more time undoing all of the stuff you did when you were tired. In the end, it's a net loss of time. smile

So I've done a couple of all-nighters followed by some good sleep. Q is really good about sending us home when he comes in and finds out we've been there all night.

My local coffee shop chose to get their beans from a local roaster:
http://www.barefootcoffeeroasters.com/

I like their Element 114 espresso, lots of flavor, not very acidic. MMmmm.

To any and all devs:

We all know that all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, so what was the best moment you had while in the office with your buddies/coworkers/minions.

~Apple

I like to play foosball. wink We've had some epic foos games. We also did some Left4Dead at one point which turned out to be a lot of fun. Oh -- and Fanime was pretty sweet last night too!

To all the devs:
What's your best way to relax when you're under pressure?

I like to read, and to program on other things. smile

I have not, and I refuse to play goof until I finish reworking pathfinding. :p
--Halzy

Well when will that be? Just Kidding. But what is pathfinding? Is it what is sounds like, just a path for info to travel? Could you explain for the general public?

Well, it's something that we do all the time without realizing it. How do you make it to the front door from where you are? Is the couch in your way? How do you go around it? Pathfinding even takes into account the different costs associated with different routes. So if you had 4 different paths to the front door, it would find the less costly route.

For even more fun check out Graph Theory: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graph_theory
Pathfinding: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pathfinding
And a simple tutorial for A*: http://www.policyalmanac.org/games/aStarTutorial.htm
