Do you like your natural hair? Go to post 59 Chatterbox Mon Sep 15, 2008 1:04 am
Female, 24, haven't worn my hair in its natural state since I was 16. Hate it. Straighter than a homophobic bikini judge and the ugliest shade of olive puke brown you've ever seen. At the moment, it looks like Tuomas Holopainen's hair pretty much exactly.
which is better??? Go to post 5 Chatterbox Fri Sep 12, 2008 4:30 pm
They both suck. You're not reading books about vampires, you're reading books about someone else's sexual fantasies. Rather immature ones, at that.
OMG POET NUT! (it's an actual discussion, people) Go to post 31 Writers Fri Sep 12, 2008 4:22 pm
Your main problem, I think, is mindset.

If you intend to be an English major, you need to love English, not just selectected bits of it.

Stop hating things based on genre. When I hear you say that poetry sounds to you like random words strung together, I see that you've never read poetry. You've probably read some crappy pseudo-high-art bullshit peddled to you in school as "poetry" everyone and their mother has had to choke down like a force-fed fois gras goose for the past 200 years. This is especially true if you had to read Emily Dickinson, Walt Whitman, William Blake, TS Eliot, or William Carlos Williams (all of whom, don't get me wrong, I love -- especially my darling pornstar Whitman, but they do come off as kind of babbling and rambling and random).

Try this instead. It's a poem about a king who goes mad and believes he is a sheep:

Quote:

Nebuchadnezzar
Elinor Wylie

My body is weary to death of my mischevous brain;
I am weary forever and ever of being brave;
Therefore I crouch on my knees while the cool white rain
Curves the clover over my head like a wave.

The stem and the frosty seed of the grass are ripe;
I have devoured their strength; I have drunk them deep;
And the dandelion is gall in a thin green pipe;
But the clover is honey and sun and the smell of sleep.

EDIT: And as for theatre... pick you up some Stoppard (Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead" is the best, imho), or maybe Cyrano de Bergerac, or Arthur Miller's "The Creation of the World and Other Business"... you'll stop hatin'.

The Original Royce G
Alright guys, here's one that me and the soon-to-be wife have been throwing out there for the last couple of weeks. For those of you that do believe the popular theory that the world will not be suitable for human life in the next 100 years, how does that make everyone else feel about bringing children into the world?

Someone is feeding you bullshit.
Cat With Wings Go to post 29 Extended Discussion Fri Aug 29, 2008 4:33 pm
You know, it's entirely possible to groom a cat with fur like that and encourage specific matting of the fur that builds over time to look like that. It'd probably work in more or less the same way you can literally weave yarn directly from the body of a live angora rabbit. If you gather the shedding hair and more or less "mold" it onto one place on the animal's body, it wouldn't be very difficult or take very long to produce the effect of wings that are really nothing but matted fur. She may have used any number of techniques, including felting needles (especially if she added small amounts of sheep's wool to the shed cat hair), strengthening it with any number of possible bonding agents, or honestly I can imagine it would probably work to groom the shed hair from the cat then use your hand to massage it into the cat's shoulders and gradually lengthen the matted knots that result.

All of which, I grant, would take a very patient and personable cat, but it can be done. Ultimately, it might be a little uncomfortable for the kitty, but I doubt it's painful (my long-haired feline gets matted knots all the time) and I can't imagine it's causing any lasting harm.

I know that there may have been many more topics on this book. But I only want to spread the word about this book. It's called Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. The Twilight Saga (Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, Breaking Dawn) is an amazing story. For those of you who have never read it, you should....I'm just recommending this great series of books... biggrin

Oh jesus christ.

Yeah, they make good toilet paper.
I think I have too macabre of tastes. Go to post 16 Books Fri Aug 29, 2008 2:22 am
I think you're fishing for attention and want people to think you're omg soooo dark and edgy.

There are a few thousand murder mysteries in my house. My mother has read next to nothing else since before I was born. And my mother reads AVIDLY.

My mother is the least dark or macabre person you will ever meet.

You're not doing your own beliefs any favors by communicating them like a 5-year-old banging on the keyboard while wearing boxing gloves.
