Do you believe it is an important contributor to a green future

or too risky to be invested in?

Personally I believe anything can be dangerous given the circumstances

2 disasters and people are ready to throw it out the window

All due respect to the families of Chernobyl and Fukushima victims.

Thorium is dah way to go.
Thorium's nice, but Uranium is safe right now, so long as you upgrade all of the older plants.

Thorium is more suited to commercial scenarios, whereas uranium is more controllable, and would be better for use where loads are variable, like ships.
If you use all the fifty year old plants around the world then its not safe, if you build newer models and upgrade existing ones sure.

Deaths per terawatt hour.
Yep, turns out oil is actually one of the least safe. Nuclear power is 2nd safest, with only hydroelectric beating it.

When people say nuclear power is "risky," they're not talking immediate dangers. They're thinking of the waste.

We actually have proposed storage facilities. The problem is, everyone is whining about how many thousands of years it would have to last for the material to be safe.
The obvious; if our civilization is still around, and the containers start to break down, we can fix it relatively easily.
If our civilization is gone, then, well, what the hell do we care? Our civilization is already dead, who are we trying to save?

What time period is that one covering? I remember seeing one covering 1969-2000; nuclear was the safest during that time period.

Don't really feel like looking for the date; there really aren't enough rivers for all of the US to go hydro anyway.
For most of the US, nuclear is going to be the safest.

Sure, but you just can't beat the raw power of thorium! blaugh

Enduring Regular

Nuclear along with other sources of energy is the future. Fission reactors are costly and inefficient but fusion has a lot of potential.

Most of the "waste" produced by a fission reactor isn't dangerous, contaminated by small amounts of radiation that isn't even able to penetrate a typical piece of A4 paper. The reason they have to treat it as a major threat to Human health is because the general public have an odd fear of radiation.

Actually, fission reactors are some of the most efficient and are the cheapest, tied with Solar, except Solar only ties them because of government subsidies.

While the plant and production are relatively expensive, you also get the most bang for your buck, so they are wonderful for cities, whereas you'd need acres upon acres of windmills, you can just have one nuclear plant.

Greedy Consumer

I think, it reminds me of japans failures.
Otherwise Im sort of w/e about it.

They cost a lot, but they're nearly as efficient as oil plants. (In fact, were it not for the tremendous initial cost, they'd be more efficient than oil.)

We can't switch to fusion, we don't know if we can harness it yet.
The ITER will be ready in 2019, supposedly. If it works, we may be able to switch to it.

Best part is, not only is the waste protected in a container designed to withstand a bazooka blast, even if it somehow spilled out, because the half life is so long, they could literally just go down to the spill site, and pick it up, no harm done.
The problems with waste stem from groundwater contamination, which takes place over a long period of time. However, if one of the containers is compromised, we can simply fix it long before this has time to happen.
Too many people fall into the ignorance about nuclear power and assume it's dangerous because they know nothing about it.
