In Death Note, L eats nothing but sugar and sweets and it supposedly helps him think and makes him smart. Does this have any scientific basis? If so, does it matter what kind of sugar, like high fructose or carbohydrates, etc?

(I was going to post this Q on Yahoo Answers, but I've been posting whatever curious things comes to mind, and I'm running out of points.)

Nope, sugar is not good for any part of your body. In fact, having too much sugar in the blood can cause serious health problems. Little bit like the amount present in fruits is enough and i suggest not to add any more than that to your body and to your blood. Instead eat complex carbs which is much better and essential to your body.

I believe a fundamental lesson is needed here. Carbohydrates aka sugar is present in all of your diets in one way or another. Albeit be bread, pasta, rice, cake, pie, fruit, etc. Those are all "sugar" and not all of it is bad for you.

Now regarding the anime, eating sugar such as table sugar aka sucrose is just eating more carbohydrates than necessary. As said before, glucose which is a molecule composed from sugar is the basis of energy for the brain. But eating this in surplus will not ensure this will reach the brain. Remember than blood circulates the body and when we eat the liver tells the blood to take up the sugar and deposit it in fat cells so it doesn't even reach the brain at times.

Based on the replies of this thread, I'm going to assume it's this.

I know that if people have high blood sugar levels their arteries get damaged, which means their brain lungs heart and eyes will suffer the most, well aside from the veins and such of course lol. It literally would speed up aging. But having some sugar throughout the day might not be bad, but sugars icnrease aginfg even when its not high, which si why fruits have antioxidants to counter act that affect.
