ammonia+bleach releases chlorine gas. I just learned about it in chemistry.

i did it redface its not that dangerous so long as your super careful and know what your doing, but my crystals didn't form. (note that when blowing your face should be covered with a mask with supplied oxygen, also any skin that gets to close does get irritated but it goes away) and personally im more scared of the chances of creating nitro glyc then the chlorine gases :S

oh and for the person who asked where you get ammonia, most chemists stock it in large quantities but it can only be bought it small shares. toys R Us crystals > these ones :3.

Uh. It's not actually supposed to make crystals. Someone messed with the original recipe for crystals. The whole point of this thing is to kill anyone stupid enough to do it.

The bleach and ammonia react to form poisonous chlorine gas.
If you vary the amounts of chlorine and ammonia in the mixture, you can also wind up with corrosive hydrazine (N2H4, used as a common rocket fuel), or explosive nitrogen trichloride.

All of those are extremely toxic. You may remember Chlorine gas from its use as a chemical weapon during the first world war.

Exactly. I wouldn't exactly go on as to say it would kill you though, chances are most people who see this will probably freak out and leave once they notice the reaction isnt what they expected. where did you find this? whoever put this up should be locked away. What if some parent or something found this and decided it would be a fun experiment to do with their kids?
