If you vary the amounts of chlorine and ammonia in the mixture, you can also wind up with corrosive hydrazine (N2H4, used as a common rocket fuel), or explosive nitrogen trichloride. When you mix bleach and ammonia, you get this following chemical reaction.
2(parts)NaOCl + 2NH3 --> Cl2 [Bleach] [Ammonia] [Chlorine Gas] (Chem students will note that I have left out the chloramine products for simplicity) Chlorine gas is very corrosive because it possesses 7 electrons in it's outer shell. Due to the octet rule, it will seek those electrons from anything it can get. Especially human flesh. It's corrosive properties are due to it's 'electron hunger'. This is not something you'd want near your eyes or mouth. |
