My U.S. history professor told me that the Mayans stopped using their calendar because they eventually assimilated into the encroaching Spanish cultures that were invading. But weren't the Mayans destroyed due to a devastation of resources or something? I don't remember.
Yes, you're right. History suggests a massive drought killed 15 million of them in practically one day.
No it does not. There is not historical evidence of a massive drought causing serious problems for the Mayans. The theory of this massive drought comes not from archeological evidence, but from scientists examining lake beds and other physical proxies. Mind you, I am not saying the evidence is incorrect. It is a possible explanation (which would fit in with earlier ecological theories for the decline in civilization). There simply is no archeological or historical evidence suggesting it.
More importantly, millions of Mayans did not die "in practically one day." The idea of a drought causing that many deaths in a short period of time is ludicrous. The theory of a massive drought leading to the Mayan decline says the drought lasted for two hundred years.
Most importantly. The Mayans never predicted any doomsday. This end of the world nonsense came about because people misrepresented Mayan culture, most likely out of incompetence. This entire fad is nothing but stupidity built upon stupidity. A little easy reading is all it takes to see practically everything said in this topic is wrong.
